I was out shoping for fish one day and found a fish I had not seen before. I asked 4 people in the lfs what it was and they decided that it must be a some type fish. Wow this was just the answer I was looking for. I asked them how much it was and since they had no idea what it was or what the price was they said it must be free/donated. I said bag it up. I guess I was not that smart either because I put it in Qtank with some danios until I could figure out what it was. The next day I found out it was some type of pike and that it really liked the taste of those danios. I ended up giving it to a friend and it seems to be doing great. I guess the lesson is to not buy the unknowns, from the the unknowing.

Welcome to MFK!!!
Nice story. But, this thread is worthless without a pic of the mystery pike.

:grinyes: let me guess it was like petco or petsmart or something
It does happen, Pike cichlids or pike characins are great fish but they think that danios are great snack food. As a future rule of thumb, fish that have a long, cigar shape and longish mouth are often predators. Most decent fish shops keep an Axelrod's fish atlas or something similar on hand, or have a book section, you can always try to look it up there. Of course now that you are here you can snap a picture of any "unknown" fish and post it, someone will be able to give you an ID.

Any fish that is small enough to fit in the mouth of another fish is potential food and is in danger becoming a feeder.

Ha, nice reply. I love you emoticon.
I always quarantine new fish by themselves, if I am unclear on how voracious its appetite is.
