do any of you have large Iridescent sharks? i have always been somewhat fascinated by the BIG iridescent sharks, but never picked one up...anyway over the weekend i found a nice 6-7 incher and decided to give it a shot. i thought this would be a nice start to making a monster iridescent shark! if you have any pics of your BIG ID sharks please post them!

No pix cause i don't have him anymore, but I grew one to about 15" in my 120gal. Not enough personality for me so he got traded!

ooooh... bought him at 4" maybe? 3 years old I'd guess, it was my wife's addition to the tank, she's always liked these fish but was surprised at how large I was able to grow him ^^. Got big fast once he was able to eat the cichlid staple.

He's sharing a tank with 3 2ft+ tropical gars and a M/F pair of 2ft ornate polys. The 4 smaller T-gars are across the aisle in the 420gal. He feeds on minnows, salmon pellets, sinking sticks, aro sticks, and FD krill/plankton.

Nice fish Oddball!
I had an Iridescent Shark for a short while. He was 18" long. Those pectoral fins scared the poop outa me. I made the decision that he needed a good home and took him to a place here in FL called Celico Wader Gardens. They let me put him in there 10,000 or so gallon pond with there koi (4'-5'). I wonder how he is doin? I think I'll take a trip out there today and see!

why yes it is I am still trying to figure out if I am going to get a new tank or find it a nice home (since it is illegal to put them in an outdoor pond here). I havn't really measured but if I had to guess I would say 10" it's a shubunkin. It was only about 2" when it was forced on me 3 years ago lol. it actually has grown much faster than my irridescant that was bought at the same size/time, but I think that's because my water temps have been on the cooler side for most of this year. I just added a new heater though so temps are gonna be back to a nice warm range lol.

I used to have a 14" Albino Id shark! He was awesome but I only have pics of him on paper this was before they had digital cameras out.
But they sure do turn out nice you normally see them in the stores when they are only about 3 inch and the are a pink color not that albino. But after mine was larger his white started showing out really good.He was a pure milky white!
I loved him!

I'm getting a Pangasius Cat next week as a rescue. It belongs to a lady that bought it for her 35 gallon. After buying a 55 and a 75, she needs to find a new home for it. It's up to about 16" now.

I plan on putting it in my 185 gallon fiberglass tank (48" square by about 22 inches deep) with an 11" TSN and a 10" P. niger. This will have to do for about a year, I am in the planning stages for a big (800 gallon+) fiberglass tank.

It was really nice to see everyone's fish!

so i bought 2 Iridescent Shark and had them for about a month and a half now. i was wondering what should i feed them to fatten them up a bit cause they only eat food thats on the bottom and they dont eat a whole lot of it. currently eating the sinking pellets i feed. BUT when they do it they look like a vaccum head down tail almost straight up and they just suck away pretty awesome. they are about 3'' - 5'' long still young. the store owner said they were around 1 month old when he sold them to me so yeah =D

ITHURTZ
06-15-2008, 3:40 AM
try some tropical crisps, I seem to find mine eat better with the lights off. As they get bigger they should eat anything and everything.

niksu
06-15-2008, 3:07 PM
hm but the problem is they only eat whats on the tanks bottom, they wont eat blood worms cause by the time they reach the bottom its already eaten by others haha n they dont come up to the surface to eat the blood worms..

ITHURTZ
06-15-2008, 4:29 PM
Mine never feed from the top, most people say as the get bigger they learn to eat from the top. My biggest is 6" and Iv only seen him take a pellet from the top twice since I got them (7 months ago)

niksu
06-15-2008, 5:03 PM
yeah i was scared that they wont grow but i guess it will. so basically just keep feeding them sinking pellets?

ITHURTZ
06-15-2008, 5:10 PM
I would ya. I have a variety of fish in my pool so there are sinking and floating types. SO if they have they need to, they can start surface eating. Just stuff those bellies and they will grow.

ITHURTZ
06-15-2008, 8:36 PM
judging by your sig, you have a multi thousand gallon tank/pond, if not you will never grow a huge one.

I have six ID's ranging from 10inches to 16inches in my 265g. It is a very fun tank to watch. Some prefere to eat from the top, some prefere to eat from the bottom. All of them love their pellet's. You will definatelly enjoy yours as he get's bigger.

Here are my 3. They are crazy active; and I feel are outgrowing their current 210g home. Will probably look to sell them sometime in the semi-near future. But they're very pretty. None of these pictures are particularly stunning--hard to capture the luminescence.

The first picture taken right before a water change; they don't take those sitting down.
