View Full Version : Will Never Own a Pleco!

Since I got into fish keeping I have always kept Plecos based on that idea that they help the tank stay clean from food leftovers and all.

I decided to test that whole 'they **** more then they eat theory" and removed a Pleco from my 30 gallon. Now it has been a week and I was doing the water change today and there is virtually no ****!

I am getting rid of the other two Pleco's tomorrow morning!

You must admint. The s**t is easier to remove than the algae they eat.

Well that particular tank is nowhere near a window, and the fluorescent light on it is not powerful enough to overwhelm me with algae. There is barley non algae at all! :)

I like the plecos that are as big as boxcars. (well...almost). My smallest plec-type is my royal panaque at ~16".

Algae will grow in any body of water... Leave a glass of water (not bottled) and algae will eventually grow...

I love pleco's.. then again i'm obsessed with cleaning my gravel.. so it all evens out

i think the spiny plecs are great i have 2, a spinosus which does nothing for cleaning the tank and a hystrix who does an ok job on the glass

Well, my royal is also my biggest plec, now. It looks like a raccoon decided my 22" common pleco was on the menu. It looks like a scene from Predator. "Phil, is that your plec, Tank?" "I can't tell."
Warm weather grow-out ponds are great until the neighborhood fauna gets wind of them.

This is my yellow pleco I got from a LFS cheaply at $5 only.:D Reason for getting him is that his colour contrast with my tank's background colour very well:D

piranha45

that's just a color morph of a common pleco right?

Ummm, that seems a little bassackwards to me. If there was virtually no feces, it would seem that the Plecs are doing a pretty good job of eliminating the detritus and not fouling the water. Or maybe they pulled a Bear Grills on you and ate their own poop

But either way, you are going to need something in the tank to clean up the bottom are you not? So why get rid of the Plecs? I mean if your aqua-system is healthy right now why screw with it.

Yeah, some Plecs are ugly (or rather not eye catching) but they evolved to fill a certain need in nature and just so happens their's was as the garbageman.

I love my plecos but most of em are lazy buggers.
Only my 10" Hypostomus cleans the whole tank on it's own.
Plus they eat more than one zuchinni a week....
Next to tha algae tabs and wafers...
Men, I had to buy Huge bags to keep up.
But I don't mind cleaning up after them!

Well I had a stupid idea that having lots of plecos in one tank would be a great idea. Lots of wood, large gravel etc. a year or so on from the setup, I'm growing out a GG in the same tank.

Needless to say I enjoy cleaning it, every other day, but I still love the tank and the fish in it, especially once the lights go out and the fish come out to play.

I LOVE my Plecs! I just made a Plec Tank. I enjoy them so very much. They can poo all they want and I'll consider the extra syphoning a labor of love lol

Cracked me up the other day!!! I come around the corner and my pleco is on the front of the glass and he is kicking one out that reached all the way to the back and then some.I swear it was almost arms length!!

i personally love plecos! we have four of them, and would have more if space allowed. Just my opion, any way you look at it you still have to clean the tank and do water changes no matter what type of fish you have. Its just a matter of what you want to keep and enjoy!!!!!!!!

If you view plecos as algae removers than there was your mistake.

Enjoy them for whatever species they are. If they eat algae, well, that is a bonus.

I like my sailfins. Big and beautiful. They also don't hide either.

I really like my plecos. So much so that I removed the lima shovelnose catfish that I also liked and had for almost 2 months, to keep the plecos from becoming dinner. :D

And if they ever clean your windows it allways a half-job.
They never clean the whole window.
Just the bits they like....
Love em though......

My albino bristlenose is awesome :headbang2 I added him to a well established tank, and in just one day, my rock work, glass, plants, and heater was lookin brand spankin new.

I agree some of them are ugly, but the albino bristlenose in my opionion is nice looking.

real talk right here kids listen up

i love my plecos.. the real trick to string cleaning is lots of loaches... they move around so much that all the poop gets smashed up and sucked into the filters like its suposed to... except for that pile thats always behind that plant... for some reason they never smash that one..

Plecos are not janitors. They are not tank cleaners, they add massive bioloads alot of the time. Dude, sounds like you kept them for the wrong reasons.

Word!

i think they add a nice contrast to some tanks.....i've only got a Gold nugget atm i was looking into gettin an albino bushynose longfin........i love that yellow one but i know it's a common and will get really big. mine like zuchs doesn't really go after the algea wafers that make it down.......i break some up for the cichlids that are wanting their greens

plecs are to cool to care how much mess they make

Rockbass6
05-30-2009, 9:55 PM
bristlenose plecos are worth the mess imo, I have plants and need lights, and they help me out alot with my algae. I also like my L333 its very territorial for a smaller fish and expecially a pleco, fights off all fish that go near his piece of driftwood. I have to agree that I won't get a common, too big and uninteresting, but thats just imo. I see why people like them, I just rather pay alittle more for one with a little color and stays under 20''.
Wow this is old! Who dug this out of the basement! haha
