I've gotten rid of mites by hanging a piece of "No Pest" strip in the enclosure. Not a big piece, inch or 2 piece is enough. I also disinfected the cage as best I could and baked cage furnishings. I'm sure others will have other suggestions but that worked for me, and they didn't spread to my other herps which was my main concern.

There's a mite killer spray on the market, that's always worked really well for me.

When I get animals with this kind of probs what I normaly do is just soak the afected animal several times a day on warm water and keep the terrarium very clean with litle decour. It has so far always worked. Im not a big fan of quemicals

i would wipe the snake, bleach the cage. throw out all cage decor (away from house). paper towel the tank, one hide and one water dish. you can get pest strips at your local hardware store.

i remember back in the day it was suggested to rub vinager oil on your reptile. this would suffocate the mites. people still do this?

I remember using mineral oil for this... seems to work well. Haven't done it in years though. Also, treating the enclosure with Provent-A-Mite works well... just FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS and do not spray it on your animals.

on the no pest strips it specifically says keep away from pets and should be somewhere unoccupied by humans and you could only be in that room for 4 hours at max and there in my bedroom so.... and by the way i got one anyway what should i do?

You don't have to bake it really hight to kill them, 300 will do for 25 mins or so. As for the NP strips you just want to hang a small piece in the enclosure. You want it away from the snake though which might be tough; I always used it with herps that weren't able to reach it but a burm can likely stretch up to wherever you hang it. Best bet is probably coura's suggestion, do you have other herps that the mites can spread to? If so get your burm isolated away from them if at all possible.

what we did at the pet store, was cut a little chunk off and put it inside a plastic container. the containers had a lot of little wholes on the sides and top that we had punched through. this might be better to keep snake from touching the pest strip. make sure it isnt near the water.

First problem...you have your Red Tail and a Ball together.

To get rid of your mites, it's simple.

Bathe any and all snakes in luke warm bath water. Run the tub to 3" - 5" deep, insert snake and leave them.

You need to remove any and all material from any and all enclosures your snakes have been in. I'm not talking baking and/or bleaching hides and/or water bowls. Trash them and replace them all.

Mites have to breathe, to be able to survive. Rub your snakes (any that already have mites and any that have been exposed to your infected snakes) with cooking oil. The film of oil will suffocate and kill and mites that are on them.

Get a mist water bottle. Fill 10% bleach and 90% water and clean their enclosures...glass and everything. Bleach will 100% completely evaporate, leaving behind no residue, while killing all parasites.

DO NOT USE pest strips in the cages OR the same room. They have been known to cause permanent neurological problems in snakes. Damn... I remember when people were using that crap 10-20 years ago; people STILL use it?

Also using oils also had caused problems -- some people even had scales of their reptiles fell off after being applied!

Anyway

1) Give your snake a bath
2) Throw away the substrate, decor, EVERYTHING!
3) Bleach the cage
4) Rub your snake down with Ivory soap (it's the only thing that is safe without being overused or been known to cause problems; old time herpers been using Ivory soap for a long time)

You can also get some Prevent-a-Mite and use it on the cage as well; do not spray on the snake itself. Some people like to use Nix as well, but be WARNED that it is easy to overdose. Personally, I stay away from chemicals if I can. We do not know the long-term effect or what excessive repetitive use of these chemicals do to our animals. Now, before I bring my reptiles into the house, I rub them down with Ivory soap, give them a bath then put them into a quarantine room for at least 2 months if known to be from a safe collection; preferably 6 months minimum or a year for best result.

Kioka thanks for posting that...I haven't had a mite problem in nearly 20 years and back then I used the NP strips. Didn't know they were toxic to the herps, that's good info. I generally only used them for 3 weeks-a month at a time and I only had one infestation (stayed away from that herp shop moving forward; they had an ongoing mite issue).

Use a temperature probe. It should be cool to touch, but not cold. If it is warm, then it is too hot for them.
