My cousin wants a Desert Iguana, I told him, that you can find them out here. And so I knew I shouldn't have opened my big mouth, so now he wants me to help him catch one for him. And I told him that their real fast.

So my question is, how do you catch a Desert Iguana? I tried to catch one earlier... but that came out in a total failure. I never really thought about catching one before, but then damb... those little guys are like bullets. So how am I supposed to catch one of these little guys? I have tried a net and bare hands, but no luck... :( So any tips would be nice.

Net catching wild lizards is VERY hard with just your hand they don't survive by being slow i would say once you get close to it sprint at it and try and net it don't try to sneek up and them grab it from a dead start to full speed a lizard will beat you everytime

I kind of gathered that. :D Thanks for the advice, I'm trying again in the morning, around 9:00. Thats when they start to bask, so since their still warming up I might have a better chance. And another thing that doesn't help is how this obnoctious black stray cat, keeps following me around the desert.

A Stray Cat will kill the local wildlife, find he/she a home.

Well he is a stray... but not. See a house right next to the desert entrance, feeds him and gives him water, but they don't house him, so he lives outside all the time.

Hay, I think thats how much hours I will spend trying to catch one. But no really $100! Wow I see the little monsters like its no tomorrow. So they really don't seem worth it. But I guess thats diffrent for me.

I called all the pet and reptile stores in my area and they all say no they don't carry any, because their native so you can just catch one in the wild.

Yeah, thats really working out for me. :irked:

So any more tips? I would really appreciate it. ;)

Not really... it's how how researchers catch Crested Geckos in New Caledonia...

Except with a sniper scope on the net gun.

Yeah, this is here in the east coast, remember? They're apparently illegal to capture in most of their native range, so captive-bred specimens fetch a lot.

I catch lizards all the time whit a small snare for my college reserch :D but anyway I must warn you that desert igs are not a easy species to keep, they stress a lot and tend to have finiky eating habits that is if you can get her to eat at all. The fact that you live in the lizardīs natural habitat may help if you are willing to build her a outdoor pen whit the plants that he feeds on the wild. I recomend however that you do the rigth thing and both of you enjoy them where they bellong in the wild and get your cousin a nice leopard gecko. He will be much happier in the long run;) Oh and by the way here are some guys willing to pay more than 250 euro for a captive bred one:WHOA:

I don't see why, if you came down here you would find thousands of them. So their clearly not endangered, but oh well I checked my range, their legal to catch here.

I would take advantage of where you live and build an outdoor enclosure for them if you decide on catching a few. I also agree with coura that you should just enjoy the fact that you are lucky enough to have them living wild in your backyard. Not too many people have that luxury. I think you should go take some photos of them for all of us to see. :)

try this use dark colored sheets to make a "V" shaped fence around the iguanas at the tip of the "V" put a cage. the chase the iguanas in the direction of the cage the fence will funnel them into the cage.

Actually, in the desert you want to dig a hole and put a bucket into the ground. Put some food around and in the bucket. You can set many of these up, just remember where you put them (GPS?).

Out at zzyzx, we caught many western side blotch's for research.

I don't know how much euro is worth, but I imagen that its a lot. But don't worry, I will make sure he cares for it properly. I have done a lot of wild lizard care here. And I have watched them before and seen how they survive and what they eat. :)

Thats what I have, like I said I have experience with wild lizard care out here, so keeping one outside will be a breeze, and I don't get this speices in my backyard, I have to go out to the desert to find them.

Um... again we'll see, I'm going out later when it gets cooler. So if all else fails I will try that. Thanx

actually, the desert igs we had at the pet store a few yrs ago were wild caught and most became quite handable. some had really good personalities. i think at that time (2001 we had them priced at 69.99. they ate greens like collards, turnip greens, and mustard greens. i would also bring dandelion flowers from home for them. they also liked to snack on waxies and mealworms every now and then
