Rescued Bat
As I was on my way to jog, I found helpless tiny bat being attacked by a crow. Instinctively I rescued it, one of its wings has a fractured bone hence prevents it from flying.
This bat's face is like a dog, high ears, brownish to black fur. I carried the bat with my hands ( bad idea? I read bats carry diseases and if it bites you you need to get rabies shot )
I gave it water and mango..and I want to take it to the vet. But reading online about disease and **** it just makes me uneasy...I just wanted to help...what should I do?

You might want to look up a wildlife rehabilitation institute in your yellowpages and have them pick the little guy/girl up for you if you cant drop him off.

Do that and also get a doctor appointement. Desinfect your hands and bitting place with alcool. This guys carry some serious stuff. That was a fruit bat or flying fox rigth:confused:

I found a bat once, I was at a local stream catching crayfish and there was a floating tennis ball in there with a small bat clinging to it. It was one of the common local insectivorous bats, a brown bat I think. Anyway fished him out and brought him home (he wasn't happy about me either). Anyway when dusk came I brought him outside as he was dried off...he flew right off. Kind of random I know but it's rare to really get to look at a bat up close.

ive helped brown bats before mostly just by picking them up with socks on my hand or something protective but none have tried to bite me yet.

if you were bitten and there is a chance for rabies you will want to keep the bat or bring it somewhere where it will be tested for rabies. if they dont have the bat to test for rabies you will be subjected to all the rabies shots and stuff whether you have it or not. if the bat was being attacked by crows in the daylight then im thinking it was sick already. whether sick with rabies or not, you wont know unless its tested

I'd recommend getting you and the bat looked at as well. Bats are up there with being the #1 vectors for rabies.

No good deed goes unpunished.
Yeah, there will be institutions that will take it off your hand. I would check yourself out too, sure you'll be fine though. I like bats, had one knock itself unconcious when it flew in the house- gave it some water then returned it outside when it came around.

Bats are good, bats eat bugs, sick bats bad. Kill bat and put it where others (people or animals) won't mess with it. We had a sick bat on or front porch in broad daylight and this is the fate that our front porch bat met with. Don't mess with bats!

nocturnal animals with rabies are often out in the daylight. Crows are diurnal so one of them was not right. Likely your bat is now sick if it was not before it met Mr Crow. Good luck, hope youre not too needlephobic.
Then again....any evidence of super powers yet?

If the bat has rabies and I got biten and am infected, should it have taken effect by now? If so, I am good here with no strange feelings. The bat gave me a gentle bite, no cut whatsoever, didn't draw blood, not even a scratch..and I pushed away quickly.
The bat is eating banana right now.
do you have a pic of it? Glad to hear you're not foaming at the mouth.

Rabies symptoms can sometimes take months to show up. I'd still visit a doctor just to be sure.

Caught a bat once, it was hiding between two stump of trees. Brought it home in a cardboard box and released it within an hour after I didn't know what to do with it:ROFL:
And a sudden urge to make a lot of money and fight crime.

You could have sell it to mcdonalds:D They are always looking for some to put in there´s "Big bat " Mcmenu. They are the next big thing in there, second only to "meat by products" Mcmenu:ROFL:
I so love these little creatures! :) Whenever I go fishing, and the sun starts to go down, there are dozens of these cuties that come fly around to grab the bugs off the lack (and those pestering me ;)). We only have cute little insectivor bats here though, no adorable fruit eaters! :)

Oh and dont forget the urge to find a real dorky side kick:D:ROFL:
