Okay... a few MFKers bought some Payaras for $50.00 from RKC and lets get those good clear shots out and start to disect the Armatus vs Tat
The Juvis have dark freckles on their body and they do swim like an Armatus/Tat does.
The tail does look round like DBJunkies Juvi Armatus, so that
is a PLUS!!:headbang2. I am 70% Tat and 30% Armatus... so I still have hope (as does the Celtics:ROFL:)

I'm not an expert, so I can't give 100% ID. Besides, in my line of work, "think" means "I don't know if..." It's either "I know" or "I think" :D Give them a month or two, and we'll know. :naughty:

here is the best shot i can get. what ever they are cant wait to go get some guppies tonight.:goldfish: these are about quarter size. i doubt anyone can 100% ID them yet.

Yeah me too. i see a lot of Tat side effects on my 2 pcs. Hopefully I am wrong:D
Just took a good look at your 2nd pic and I noticed the Freckles on yours too:D
Looking at the spot behind the gills... Im more than 75% positive they are Tats. Armatus have a thiner/longer one and Tats have a thicker and more rounded dark spot (dont know what it is called:D)

We need pics of lil Tats....... That's the problem.To me the overly large fins make me lean towards Armatus. I mean even in the recent posted pics I see a huge similarity to my guy when he was small and the pics X posted...Other problem..... Do Tats grow at the same rate up to say 5-6 inches?

Good point on the growth??? I would think that they would grow faster than Tats at all cost. Especially when they go threw their growth spur:naughty:
I tried doing a mill diff google searches for young Tats, and nothing:cry:

Thats a cool looking Tat. Mine looks like that... but more older (freckles are fadding away). Although I ran into a fishbase info and there are suppos 4 locations where Tats are found. Brazil, columbia, venezuela and peru. I wonder where these Armatus/Tats came from? Also where your little monster is from?

That fish is not mine but the pic is from OPEFE.
Armatus also have a very very wide range and are not restricted to Venezuala like often thought.

YUP.. TAT's has a different stance than ARMATUS.
TATS swim/hover with the head towards the bottom practically all the time. I was going to make that comment about your picture.

YUP.. TAT's has a different stance than ARMATUS.
Never owned an Armatus, but it looks to be the same stance from a Tat and Armatus. At level?
TATS swim/hover with the head towards the bottom practically all the time. I was going to make that comment about your picture.
Dont worry X... it is just feeling out the bare bottom of the tank. My big Tats did the same for a few days cause of the reflection of the glass. Every here and there they would snap at the floor to bite the reflection
Here is an old pic of the Tats that John owns now. Just guessing??... but I would think Tat or Armatus would do this on a barebottom glass tank (like I said though... I think:D)??

You can get 7"-8" for $50.00, and same size Armatus for $350.00, if there is one available, so $50.00 is affordable to gamble ;)
Does anyone have a picture of 1"-2" Armatus to compare if they have speckles like Tat? I saw baby Scomb not too long ago, look pretty much the same, except the tail is small and round

Armatus with proper tank size I say you should be able to get to 3 foot. Wild they get 4. You'll easily see them over a foot within the 1st year. They need LOTS of room though. Some will say they'de be fine in a decent size tank (2 foot wide) like say a 180. I don't believe that. Mine wanted out of its 180 by the time it hit a foot.Tats if you do some research you'll score a few pics of tank raised 16-18 inchers. These are across seas. To MY knowledge the biggest one I have heard of here in the states was just barely over a foot. They grow stupid slow. If you can muster 1/2 in per month out of them you are running with the best of em. I definetly believe with patience they are not tough to get to that 1.5 foot mark. BUT it's probobly gonna take many many years. But plus side with Tats is you can easily keep a shoal together whereas Armatus are usually loners.

tats usually up to 18 inches.
growth is very slow.
armatus gets up to 4 feet,in the wild.
grows fast.
both fish are new in the hobby so one cannot say for sure how big theyll get.

the tail on one of mine is getting turning a dark color. i can't snap a picture of it though these guys are extremely active and fast.

I was thinking if there are any black spots anywhere then they are probably tats since the baby 1 inch tats are completely covered in them and then loose them. So are there any payaras in the batch with absolutely no spots anywhere? Then again i never saw a baby armatus, but i think they have clear bodys?

I have one just like that, that I think is promising. He ate 4 feeders and looked like he was going to start pooping live food. He swims like crazy and swims up top too:screwy:.

Whats going on in the tank J? Is it aggression or just dying? If it aggression, try a devider.
My 2 guys like to hang out in a floating Anubia. I also took out the 90* from the outlet on the Rena and im letting the flow breack the surface to make a lot of air bubbles in the tank. So far, only 6pcs of guppies have died for no reason from the 5dz I bought (thats pretty damb good for me)
I also dont have a light on the tank, but near a window to get med light.
So far so good for me... and they eat like champs:WHOA:. I am very impressed with their eating habbits... if you move, your ganna try to get swallowed:ROFL:

By my place. There is about 5-7 leaves for about 10bucks (might be a lil less) and they can order Pots for 25.00 (Though I have not seen the pot size yet, but will order some soon. Glad to hear they arrived in good health:D. I put guppies in and with in 1 sec, they were surfacing looking for guppies. They did not hesitate to snap multiple times till they cought one. They it was arse from there. Their bellies were so full, I tought they were ganna explode:WHOA:. But I guess they enjoy being full more than enjoying their food:D

I think I'm going to do daily water changes and keep it stocked with a ton of tetras or mosquito fish. Hopefully they get some size on them soon :)

Thats what Im doing. Except... Im feeding the guppies beef heart (just a lil, but nothing else), so when the Payaras eat the guppies... hopefully they can digest the undigested beef heart too:naughty: (have no Idea if it works, but worth a try. Also maybe it will be a taste that the Payaras will get used to:naughty: so I can get them on beef heart)

you guys should try fatheads/minnows. I bought 15 guppies and 15 fatheads and they seem to like to eat the fatheads more. or maybe the fatheads are just slower.
either way the fatheads filll them up MUCH more than the guppies.

you guys should try fatheads/minnows. I bought 15 guppies and 15 fatheads and they seem to like to eat the fatheads more. or maybe the fatheads are just slower.
either way the fatheads filll them up MUCH more than the guppies.

He went from 4" to 12" in a little over three months.
Petco has a **** load of tetras and others on sale @ 5 for $5. Just cleaned them out of rosie reds and neons. Should be an interesting Saturday morning :)

These guys are growing fast! Im down to 12 neons out of 30 in less than a days time. One of the 4 payara is losing its tale...I'm guessing he will die. I started adding bloodworm cubes into the tank and they are scooping that up as well.

this is only my comment on the Hydrolycus sp. All of us can google and yahoo the Hydrolycus Armatus and tatanuaia on the internet. But good point raised by "John", no one has posted nor has shared their photo of a 1 inch to 2 inch armatus up to this date. We cannot based our decisions based on what is written on the internet, unless coming from a well documented source using science and not someone else's opinion. We may not know for a fact that all the Hydrolycus sp. can have spots on their face and body when newly born or at a very young age. Only 1 week has passed and the ones I have are starting to get more robust and bold on their body, spots are almost gone. If this does end to be Armatus for the people who bought earlier, that is a good knowledge base that at least we would know both Tatauaia and Armatus at a very young age have spots. If this ends up to be a Tatauaia then I can conclude that the Tatauaia does have spots and Armatus doesn't have any. I will wait until 1 of them that I am keeping will show concrete signs of being an armatus--it has spots as well but fading when it landed. ---- Again, this is my opinion and is not based on science. It is what you call "Hypothesis" :D

I am just going to add a lot of salt and slowly feed for a week. Then after a week let them go and add a new batch to the other side in the QT.
What do you guys think (I have no other tanks available for feeders:irked:)?

It's the filter that check your fish out, not the guppies. I have to keep guppies in my tank 24/7, or someone will get killed.

I'm 50/50 between Tat and Scomb. The tail looks too small to be Tat. Besides, young Scomb does have the orange tint on the body. Only when they're older, they turn black

You may overload the bio in your tank with those guppy. Most of the time, my babies died from either don't eat (rosies are too big) or got eaten by bigger one.. When I try to suck whatever is in the tank, he dont move. It looks like he is having contractions in his stomach. He keeps pumping and arching his back:screwy::screwy::screwy:
I pray he makes it cause it dont look good. And I do have to say I feel pretty damb good about him being an Armatus

in my 10g growout i got a ac70 and a small emperor. so far so good only guppies got sucked in before i covered the intake with a sponge.

Could have been that it was dirty? The water in the tank looked clear but when I opened my RenaX4, it was cloudy. So Im just ganna clean out the Rena every other day and do daily water changes till I can take him out of the ten gallon:D. its funny cause when I let out the water from the Rena, it is about the same amount of water that is in the 10gl Armatus

These fish were posted almost right after Father's day to give you guys some idea how old have they been in your tank. :D All the fish you guys have had speckles on the face, I am hoping for the best and if it does turn out to be the real Hydrolycus armatus then we can conclude that both Hydrolycus Armatus and Tatauaia have dark speckles on the body and face. :D I would really want to see them as Armatus with no doubt. :D

I'm going through 30+ mosquito fish every 2 days now. I have pretty much cleaned out all the LFS's within 10 miles of me. They used to be .15c each but I have a feeling that will be raised soon. The next cheapest fish at that size seem to be neons or guppies...which average about $1.99 each. I will be broke soon feeding these guys.

The top is tat and bottom armatus. I will give the owner of the second one $100 right now if he would ship that fish to me! I got my armatus at just 4" in length and he looked exactly like that!

Came home yesterday afternoon and found them floating everywhere in the tank. Didn't know WTF went wrong :irked: Did a w/c on Saturday, and they ate Sunday fine.. Final count this morning 19 checked out, 6 hang in there, but 2 have some sort of white cotton thing on the body - didn't look good :irked:

JMO... After 5 days in my tank, I added Tetra Cyclin in the tank incase he had any parasites... For a hot sec my guy looked like he was going in the cooler but shook out of it and he is looking good right now. But with babys, anything can go wrong

Did the population of Armatus in the US just go down 30%?

One of mine took a ride last night. Baby Armatus and 3/4 siphon hose = a wild ride. Hope the lil bugger pulls through.........
My only other update is my 5 are definetly NOT Armatus. They can't be cause they are schooling.....LMAO!!!! MUUUHHHHAAAHHHAAAHHHAAA........
At under 2 inches I have witnessed jaw flappin...... Rich is the man.... Vendor of the year!!!!!!!!!

They are fine when all are calm but as soon as one sprints then they spook and one usually ends up flappin at the one that sprints.....
This is gonna get real interesting.
Am I assuming right that no one has kept more than 3 together successfully?
