Hey guys just wanted to no if this has happen to anybody else my 17" black hoplias has been feeding on 4" gold fish since i got him 3months ago and about week ago i did'nt have time to make it to my lfs so i started feeding him some raw shrimp i had in the fridge an he love it, he can eat 10 large shrimp in one feediing, so after a week of feeding him the shrimp i went to my lfs an pick up his old meal 3"-4" feeders and put them in the tank an he never touch thim for days so i took them out and gave to my 18" umbee, but before the wolf would eat them soon as i put them in the tank, this has been going on for 2week now an he still wont eat the feeders, but the shrimp sims a lil to expensive any ideas on what else to feed him

shrimp is too expensive but feeders aren't?
well its probably good that he isnt eating as much feeders as they arent as good for them, maybe you could try smelt or other raw fish, though that would probably be just as expensive as raw shrimp.
i dont rightly know why he would stop eating feeders though
good luck any way

Unless he is sick fish dont starve themselves....LOL...the shrimp are probably just an easier item to eat (catch since they're not alive), as well as something different since you said he has been used to eating feeders all the time. The shrimp is completely new to him and it probably spoiled him. The best diet is a varied diet, so feed shrimp, fish filets, feeders (if properly quarantined), and crayfish and etc. He has eaten the same feeders for so long something new has sparked his interest. If he gets hungry enuff he will eat those feeders if left in there with him, but like I said feed a varied diet and you can purchase frozen shrimp and fish filets in bulk at the grocery store or fish markets for a reasonable price and freeze and unthaw as you feed. This helps the food last longer and you dont have to take the chance of getting a diseased feeder. A 17in black hoplias sounds impressive wouldn't wanna lose it over one bad feeder, jus be careful when using feeders. GOOD LUCK, AND ONE MORE THING....I NEED SOME PICS OF THIS MONSTER AND A FEEDING VIDEO WOULD MAKE MY DAY....LOL...;)

I get bait shrimp. 4 pounds for $10. No good for human consumption, but the fish (especially my gulpers) LOVE it :)

Sorry guys i do'nt own a camera but there are some pic's of the fish on a old thread, i bought him from infinite aquatics back in march he was 16" an last time i measure him he has grown a inch, if you look on the thread under 16' black hoplias between 03/08 i'am sure you can fine more pic's.
Boreek" a fellow member told me about this thread and never knew you were being "questioned" for buying a 16" black hoplias sp. from ME (Infinite Aquatics).
First picture was when the fish was in a 45 gal rubbermaid... can't even turn itself.
Second picture is from the rubbermaid waiting to be transfered to the tank
Third picture the fish is in the tank... the width of the tank is 14" so given the side view you can get the ball park "guesstimate" if you want to call it that way.
the first 2 pictures were taken by "Eman", giving some credit for the quality pictures.
I hope the "questions" and "confusions" on the size and legitimacy of "Boreek" having a 16" will no longer be in doubt.
Thank you!

it seems your wolf suddenly became health conscious ;)
His doctor just had one look at his liver and called him an alcholic, he couldn't take the pressure so he converted.

Wow he's a beauty! I got mine from Infinite also, she's about 14" and she came in with some minor tail damage that has since healed but I remember thinking "I wonder what fish had the balls to do that to her?" I'm thinking it must have been yours :)
