View Full Version : What fish would you like to have but probably would/could never get?

You guys have been there... you have this fish that you totally drool over, but cannot have because you either dont have the funds, the space, or just cant plain find the fish.

Or maybe you do have all three but this monster would probably need a really big pond or too poisonous etc..

To me, its the lungfish , i love how they get measured into feet and not mere inches, but i do not have the extra tank and space to accomodate a monster fish like that now. The arapaima, its beautiful and so graceful but i wouldnt have the space for it too.. on the same token : Albino Channel Catfish, grows too fast... nice but i have other fish priorities...

whats yours?!?!?

Would you like to have mine!
Damn thing eats EVERYTHING and is "forcing"me to build an indoor pond.

On second thought....I'll keep it hahaha I like the forced pond idea

I would like to have a snakehead, but its not worth the risk
Peacock bass......just dont have the tank space (at the moment)
asian Arowana....yummmmmmyy....Would love to be able to stare at one all day
I'll shutup...the list could go on forever

Wow...mighty list for me.

Peacock bass...though if an intermedia came my way I would snatch that up
Albino channel...unless I had a pond
Electric catfish...probably won't ever own one
Northern Pike or Musky
Sharks and rays
Some of the larger saltwater groupers and triggerfish
Siamese Carp

Rallysman - yeah size is really the main issue. Theyre so beautiful but they get bigger than a foot almost overnight. Im not closing the doors though, just not right now.

P45- oh. i thought it was because its illegal. Cobras really do get massive.

from what i understand, fish laws are poorly enforced, thereby making the law a poor deterrent.

Definitely the lungfishes due to size
Northern Pike--same issue
Sturgeon---size and availability/legality
not a fish but would love to keep the hellbender (giant aquatic slamanders), but impossible due to rarity and size (3 ft. or so)
Atlantic tarpon--size
Atlantic (SW) wolffish--size, availability
Last but not least, the giant squid (Architeuthis sp.) for obvious reasons!

Channa Barca is def a cool candidate for this thread... its a must have but the rarity and price of it is just too much.

The high end asian aros sounds very good too dixon. Actually , folks here in the us wouldnt turn down any asian aros. Theyre not rare, justt illegal.

I would love to get a bumble bee grouper from wes! That is one of the coolest freshwater fish to me, but I don't want to have to worry about trying to find a home for it when it gets too big and lost the $1000+ for the fish.

I've always wanted one of everything. Well, actually I've wanted a pair of everything so I could breed them, but you get the idea.

I probably won't ever have prianha - they tend to be illegal wherever I settle, though I have co-kept them in a research situation. But I like characins a lot.

I'd love an arapima too. I doubt I'll ever get a house-sized aquarium to keep one in though. But that would be my dream fish. Heck, that would be my dream aquarium.

Golden Arowana I would dearly love one in a tank on its own in my living room but my family come before my habit and I think my wife would be just a little upset at the fish costing more than her car! But then again, it not a bad idea, sell the car, get the fish! Get her a push bike sorted. I’m off to the shops

The following in order: Wels catfish; bowfin;a big wolf(will have someday); paddlefish;electric eel; devil catfish; peacock bass; and tiger shovelnose cat.

limited space for tanks and size of tanks needed is the major problems.

I think it is funny that almost all the "dream" fish listed by everyone are very large except mine, the jellybean jollytail (galaxias fuscus) maxes out at six inches but is usually only around 3 1/2", it is critically endangered due to the introduction of trout into it's home waters, young trout compete with them for food and larger ones eat them. I don't know why I covet them but I really do want some.

Oh.... I actually had a chance to buy half a dozen of these guys from someone who had apparently collected them from the wild and had managed to breed them, and I didn't because I didn't have the spare tank for them. :duh: Really beautiful little fish, though.

In my dream home there is a large indoor pond with a pair of red tailed catfish. My LFS actually has an adult red tail that I like to visit on occasion. He's over 2 feet long and could probably swallow a football without noticing. I also recently seen little 6" redtails for sale there, which worries me a lot, but maybe I'm just jealous that I know better than to bring a behemoth like that home with me.

Yep :grinyes:

Sorry, the jollytail just does not strike my fancy, I don't see the hype your giving it. And it's not that I don't like small fish, I love collecting NA cyprinids, darters and killifish...I just don't see the big deal that would make it more special than any other small endangered fish.

Would you want it if it was not a rare species? Or do you want it because it is rare.

I always wanted a green terror when I was 12, then I got one. Then I always wanted datnoids, then I got some. Then I always wanted a peacock bass, then I got one. (and im saving up for a 300 gal. tank for it.) Now I want an arowana, and that is something that I cant have until I get my 300 gal. tank.

I had one crazy idea once about building a pond for bluefish or striped bass. After 5 minutes of research, it was clear to me that this would never work.

I have only seen them in one public aquarium years ago, I fell in love with them. I kept my eyes open for them for years before finding out I would not be finding them. That of course made my silly infatuation even worse ( a case of forbidden fruit being the sweetest I suppose). I don't know why I like them so much, part of it might be just their name. I never claimed to be entirely rational. It is sort of like asking peanut power what makes crenacichla so special. In reality they are just one more neat little fish in a world full of neat little fish, but that does not help me out at all, lol.
