My hubby just got me a new starfish. I know they like clams and other shellfish, but I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for other food sources. It has already eaten about 1/2 a tsp. of frozen clam, but I would love to see it crack open a live one. Any input would help! Can't wait to learn more!

Live Clams, mussles, and oysters from the seafood section of the grocery store.I also use to feed mine nori wrapped around a test tube filled with sand.
Judgeing from what you have said I assume you have a chocolate chip starfish or one that is closely related. They are pretty aggresive eaters.

I have never kept them but here is a link. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-06/ac/feature/index.php and one with pointers for individual species http://www.aquacon.com/starfish.html

Would you be allowed to take pictures of the creature and post them here? I'm interested in seeing which species it is.

Most starfish, will just eat shrimp..If it's a linkia, blue, red or orange, then they usually wont eat anything you give them, just the baterial film on liverock,

Chocolate chip stars will eat anything it can grab a hold of..including snails, hermit crabs, shrimp.

Serpant stars will eat anything left over from feedings, or you can feed them pellets.

I'm sorta the backup star expert on swf.com..

We've had a brittle star since we first started the saltwater hobby. He's huge now! He eats the leftover food, but he never seems to harm anything else even though he's a monster. We also just bought a bright orange star. I think he only eats the film on the glass, rock, etc.
