View Full Version : My new Aussie Lung
Norbert

Wanted to share my new Aussie Lung (Neoceratodus forsteri)
218497
He was eating right after I let him out of the bag and actually eats out of my fingers, I think he is pretty much blind :)
Very awkward swimmer, but he is fairly active cruising around sniffing in the sand for food.
He has some frayed edges to some of his fins but I think they will all heal quickly.
He is only 4 to 5 inches and has no tankmates yet.
Hasn't surfaced for air yet, not sure if that is normal for lungfish, aussies or others, as he is my first Lungfish.

On a slight side note, how does one go about legally obtaining an aussie lung? What's the cost? I would love to have one at some point in my life. Also, I know they are exceptionally long lived...does that apply to all other lungfish species? Is 100 years feasible for all of them?

I got mine through Mike at H2O Aquatics (Vendor here), if I understand the permiting issue it is required to get the fish into the country but is not required to possess the fish once it is here?
You also might want to research whether they are legal in Arizona.
I have no idea about the longevity of other lungs, you might want to post that as a seperate question, I would be interested to know myself.

As far as the breathing thing, don't worry. Neoceratodus is not as much of an air breather as the other lungfish are. In fact, it has reduced lungs (only 1 vs 2 lungs in the others) and relies much more on its gills.

She's about 2.5ft now. Main diet is frozen market prawns with head and shell intact. Loves meal worms which the arowana missed that reaches the tank's bottom. Noticed that she tends to put on quite alot of mass round the tummy area if fed mostly on meal worms ...
Will give her Hikari sinking pellets for ranchu once in a while ... gobble that up too.
Eating is no problem now but the tank's filteration is ... :D

2.5ft!!! Nice, she's huge!
I'll have to try the mealworms, a LFS sells them, the more variety the better probably.
I hear you about the filtration, these things sure can poop! :D

Or the turtle might not like him? Don't know much about turtles, except that they look great, but from what I've heard they are nippy (?) although I've heard of a display tank I think in Australia with AULs and Fly Rivers so who knows, it might work.
