I m more on the flyfishing side ...;)
But i don t know if this winter i ll have to wrap the tank with insulating stuff and coil black outlet tubing on black copper sheet to get hot water...:(

Yes, Nine fly tying factories in Chiang Mai.
Add a 18mm *120cm pvc tubing with 18*4mm drilled holes and Jet End made by firing pvc than press it close and saw 2 holes .
It keeps the vortex movement.
Tilapias are doing fine and eat a lot
Getting more green water , think of getting shrimps to eat these algaes.
Nitrification process not ready yet.:(
Air stone fell in sump 2 inch tubbing of a filtration tank, had to drain it and get a wire (intoduce into the airstone's plastic inlet) to get the airstone out.;) have to find a stainless sink netting .
Thinking to use this thread as a diary for my Peacock bass Ops, in the case of a virus in my com everything could be keep in mfk server... ;)

Hi,
Airstone fellt in pvc drain had to empty a tank filter, get it out with a clothes hanger.
Went catch glass shrimps treated them against parasites with praziquantel and metronidazole, now in quarantine , gonna try to release in filter tanks to help process.
Last night electricity cut 2 times (monsoon now) .
If water get out of tubes the pump isl not strong enough to start pump water again.
Since i made jet and shower tubing water went green.
Maybe not enough movement on the bottom?
Will try to install the tubing at the bottom again for better movment and siphon effect in case of electricity cut ...

Just ame back from Bkk 30 min ago fish are in Tank aclimating in plastic bag.
Didn t find 5 inches X 20 fish, but found 1,5 inch fish so i bring back hundred piece, about the same price that i calculated, these are named Occelaris by the Thais.
Saw two Xingu temensis with Ich and an huge 6 years temensis .
Bought 2 x 50 from different shops, now i dont now if i shall bath them in Potassium permanganate to treat them for Ich?
There are still small fragile fingerlings you now...but they may have latent Ich as well.
But they are tired as I am.. gonna calculate dose and continue to think.
If somebody is on line now and for the next 30 min. help is appreciated.

07-12-2008, 11:18 AM
Yes you are right thanks dude .
i don t know how many will survive.
i think about 10 %.
I hope a 100%
when i ll make my choice Between thinking and hoping maybe 50%
A bit of speech:
The purpose of the concrete tank is to control the most parameters easily.
once grown i ll transfer them in mud ponds nearby.
Now i do have green algae so i did (4 days ago) harvest wash with p.permanganate some aquaticplants (katchet in thai) then arrange them in the first filter tank to eat the nitrates inplace of green algae.
I took mesh bags and filled them with charcoal (not activated) just for the nitrification surface in filter tank 2 and 3.
Glass shrimps (scavanger right ) are in there too , 3 of them get caught in homemade Pvc venturi rain blower (shall i post pic of that ?).
we can see it works a bit while sumping the bottom of the filter tanks every 2 days
1st Tank is brown for 2 seconds
2nd brown for 1 sec
3rd green and clear green.
changed the bottom drain of tank :
took a bucket plastic cover drilled it and fix a 3 inch pvc tube with big holes in it , leaving a space of 2 inches between ground and cover, to not allow water to fall directly in hole so the farside of tank is sucked as well.
bought a portable air pump to offer to a friend who lives near a lake full of glass shrimps so he can provide me... i ll treat them and stock some frozen as well
I saw in bkk:
a lot of Tiger fish 2 kinds
gator fish 2 kinds
bichir
arapaima a lot
silver aro a lot
malaysian aro beautiful ones
flower horn and koi a lot
tiger perch
snakehead n jungle perch
bought:
3 thermometers
2 portable air pump
1 replacement big air pump
artemia and pBass occelaris
i ll keep price secret cause there is no point to compare and get envious but the total bill would be less than go two people in a N.Y. Japanese restaurant
If you group let say 3 persons i ll guide you in Bangkok for three days
day 1 :market
day 2 :flyfishing or fishing for Barramundi in fishing parks (give u time to think what you realy want) ( i m not working for them ...i know them but not...)
day 3 :buying packing for export.
i ll arrange rooms food transports , i ll translate in negotiation 2 hours each dude (i m fluent in thai) from 8 am to 9 pm.
I never did it but if that s interessting to someone i ll study the possibilities.

They r not all dead:headbang2.
Water temperature between 29c/84f at 1000 pm to 31c/88f at 1200 am.
forgot to write:
Bangkok ph 7 at home 8.0 to 8.4.
but some still alive :chillpill:
They are still eating artemias.
Water is going clearer a bit.:headbang2
Sump today is quite clear no brown water like 2 days ago or as i had tilapia in it.
Water plants seems to work against green algae thinking of putting more in other Filtration tank but roots filaments are everywhere .:irked:
Have to make a filtration bucket attached to W.pump inlet as seen on MFK in set up and filtration

hi
Made inlet filter with box, mosquito window net and synthetic cotton like sheet,
It works but the flow is slowlier.
Have water foaming on surface, made a search on mfk, protein (overfeeding) or dusts (carbon, sand) might be the cause.
In my case i think it's dust from charcoal because when i try to cup them with my hand they do flee it. but had one loss, a dead body in the outlet pvc jet head kind of crushed (didn t look so recent neither old) so maybe the fat, protein of fishcorpse causing foaming.
Not ready to make a skimmer but if i had too....

5 fingerlings dead today.
Could be:
-Yesterday i mixed shredded glass shrimps with praziquantel therefore chemical poisoning but they are not all dead so what?
-Change of alimentation: artemia vs artemia mixed with glass shrimps and praziquantel.
-Made a feeder (a foam raft with a net) to let the food inside (not fall to the bottom to be wasted), after a while saw a baby in the net munching everything he could , saw his abdomen distanted like realy fatisfied, he jumped out when i tried to catch him. Therefore Overfeeding?:headshake
Water has good smell good taste and parameter ok but foaming .
After Babybassicide made a water change in third tank water with carbon on surface and lot of dust. airstone fellt in pvc outlet as well .
Glass shrimps alive on bottom of tank.:)
Inlet filter deep brown:barf: (In only 2 days) -->washed already
Water stop foaming.:headbang2
Have to make a cover to my feeder raft.

We had an electricity outtage from 9am to 5pm.
Washed filter bags and charcoal put a battery pump in place (6volts).
Had only 2 babies dead but it s only 6:17pm now so i don t know if they will all survive due to anaerobic bacteria tranformation problems.
Feeding them with small steamed mackerel meat, they prefer it to shrimp meat.
Thinking to get some raw mackerel meat ...

Hey FishDojoGod, if you have clean stream water direct it into the tank and have a natural overflow. I seen someone do that to the Malayan Mahseer in Kenyir lake and the colors are crazy!
FishDojo God
07-23-2008, 2:20 AM
Hi yes i taste the water, never went swim in a lake? Fish make love in it!
Read that japanese koi breeders are doing it. if it is not pleasant in the mouth do something....
I ve mud ponds as well that is the next step for me bass. (gonna make a thread about that)
I do have a lake nearby but there is no flowing river coming in it (only seasonal) and we are higher than the lake. Is Kenyir lake acid or alkalin? My lake is around 8.
Today:
Water is brown. Maybe beacuse it s moonsoon and it is rainning every late afternoon, pH of rain around 5.6 to 5.8
Water is not running out from pump, washed the inlet filter, brown as last time, residual matter in bucket with water is dark emerald green.
Water is running out now.
Changed spray venturi design.
2 fish dead today; one jumped on the netting around, one dead on surface, the others are eating eagerly.:mwave:
Water is brown. with foaming but not same kind: bigger bubbles that fall apart quickly, more like nitrate.:(
Now it s moonsoon and it is rainning every late afternoon, pH of rain around 5.6 to 5.8, temperature, charged with pollution?
Some days very sunny 38c under shade, somedays verycloudy and almost chilly :screwy:water at 27.5 -28c.
As a humain i m having a destabilising almost debiliting weather.
So what about my babies?
Two days before:
Added water plants in filter tank Nb.2
Tanks look clearer than main tank, why?
Rio Negro Lover
07-23-2008, 2:27 AM
So what is your intention of keeping pbass enmasse? Food? Sportfish? Ornamental? Or?
I fear the flactuating temperature is taking its toll on the babies. Better to get bigger ones next time. I don't have much luck with fries. Too much TLC required and we guys are just not detail enough.
Kenyir pH ranges from 5.8 to 8. Obviously lower around peat swamps, streams and rivers area and higher in the middle of the lake.
Good luck with the babies.

About details: Rio you point on my pride , but it s known in Thailand fish farming buiz that survival rate of few weeks born babies to attain maturity is around 10%. :chillpill:
Thai fishery and hatching system is experienced and well developed.
I contacted some professor at the royal departement of fishey, he said he is interested in my enterprise as he had try to raise Occelaris as a student (but they jumped off and die), and he is ready to exchange some Hampala macrolepidota for some occelaris. :headbang2
My dream is to Mix breed them to have magnificent colors and beam them up to you when you want some.
But first i am making my (Raising Pbass in recycled water in concrete tank) experience on occelaris then i ll go look for some adult Tems and Xingu. :naughty:
And if i can get money out of it good! it will help with electricity bills, feeders (tilapia), food for feeders....

Hi,
Casualities count up to 34 today.
Lost 4 babies in filter tank number 3.
Made a sock with a net to hold on tubing from 2nd tank to 3rd tank.
Having an slimy stick on the net and tubing kind green algae invasion.
Had a peak of stinky and green water (here i found 17 dead babies) had to changemore than a half of water, had to use LAKE water.
Fish were happy and playing on surface afterwhile :)
Note about food:
Raw mackerel smells good but is no good for my filtration.
They do not eat the skin as well
Steamed mackerel is best.
Because i use water from the lake (and its parasites) i ll allow my self to introduce more glass shrimps.
I m feeling like loosing one level in water keeping but they have to survive...:irked:

FishDojo God
08-15-2008, 11:18 AM
Yes, i tested it with Tetra strip kind of all in one.
the most important nitrite, on the color chart stick on delivering tube is like white then white white pink then white pinkup to pink at 250 mgr.
like the most important factor the mosdt difficult to read...
About same fact in fish market it is difficult to find water testers, the spirit is like letting you make trials and errors so you buy again more and more...
yesterday went there ,finally found and bought a nitrite tester, solid cotton sheets,
and and ... 50 fingerlings of 2 1/2 to 3 inches.
One die at the end of the day because of ...travelling and shopping with my wife.
2 desd found today morning while sumping .
survivors are doing well and are eating artemia and steamed mackerel.
water is clear in all tanks shrimps are there and competitng for food with bass.

some big glass shrimp snap n'cut part of the tail of a bass.
who's the predator and who's the prey?
Otherwise bass are doing well and do eat those shrimps as well...
It s raining almost every 2 days now .
Diurnal water temperature is around 28c only.
No sign of Ich (said Freud analysing itself)
There are eating 3 meals of steamed mackerel a day plus the occasional shrimps.
FishDojo God
08-29-2008, 3:31 AM
Hi
Had loss again :banhim:, six juveniles > 2 every day during three days.
Tested water with Tetra nitrite tester and water was ok.
So what is the matter?
Oxygen is running, water is flowing and falling in.
We do think they were starving, because my wife noticed that most of the shrimps had disapeared
Steamed mackerel two times a day (messy by the way) and frozen artemia , were not enough, they had to get their glass shrimps as well...
The water is around 28c most of the day and no Ich .Are we lucky?
bOOsteN aUdI
08-29-2008, 4:11 AM
you need to feed them feeders for a while till they are smashing food on the surface! i doubt they are going to accept cut food right away. plus why steam the mackeral? takes out alot of important nutrients. whats 28c in F? your water may be too cold.
FishDojo God
08-29-2008, 5:52 AM
They do accept cut food.
Mackerel is sold already steamed.
We made a try with raw mackerel, they don t kike it and it is rendering an oily film on water surface.
28c is 82f but too cold for what?
bOOsteN aUdI
08-29-2008, 1:21 PM
lol stay away from the mackeral and you need to raise your temp to 87 because they can get parasites in their gills with the temp at 82, and i still recommend feeders for a while till they are stronger... you should try my advise because your avatar is a shame and this is the second batch.
FishDojo God
08-30-2008, 12:22 PM
It is not the second batch it is a complementary batch.:chillpill:
Temperature is around that range for a month now , as i observed their gills stomac skin eyes i saw no ich no louses no worms no virus.
In Thai fishing magazine we can witness a fishing trip in some mountain lakewith pbass where released an where the temperature goes around 15 c in winter.Appparently the guys can do it ...
My wife and me are arglueing about this fact and your advice, that s why i did cut tree branches to have more sunshine as well ...
You may noy be totally right and we may not be totally wrong .
But kids don't try this at home with your off the ground aquarium ok? just keep it hot 87f .
About my avatar, it is a bit like our lord on the cross, a way to remember
It is a reality of experimentations, no shame in failure but a lot of informations that by the way I m sharing with the mfk community.

FishDojo God
09-04-2008, 9:02 AM
I dont know if it s fair or true to say that it is because i raised the temperature.
Or it may be the massive rain and Ph drop. i think so.
But that happened:
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169626
Made a day of scrubing and saving Juv peacocks.
They are actually in a canvas tank.
another 4 died of transponding
So actually i do have 22 Juveniles peacock of 4 inches
11th of June bought 100 of 1 1/2 inch
14th of July bought 5o of 2 1/2 to 3 inches
about 1/6 alive or 5/6 dead...:hitting:
... what shall i do?
Stop trying?..............Naw i m addicted.... even if it s a money loss and it s quite depressing it s better than to play my money on cards or drink booze and commenting about others life. Isn t it?
Soon as i can i ll go Bangkok and buy more , yes more and more til ? i get it.:)
Shall I try:
Stop raising them in recycled biological filter concrete tank?
Make an moveable roof over the tank, go Water medics every 10 days.
Force them to eat frozen shrimps soaked with vitamins and oxytetracycline 2 times a week
Don t count on biological filtration an make 75% water change every 3 days.
Raise them in mud pond in a net?
raise them in mud pond with air pump and water pump spraying in the net?
Take a distance course online at:
http://www.aqua.stir.ac.uk/training/index.php
Any idea ?
I know the answer is somewhere on the server in all these threads and posts :D
Once i know the right procedure im gonna tattoo it on my legs and then when i ll die my grandsons would keep the skin and post it somewhere on the house (Thai stories like that)...................:screwy:

R Evolution,
We transponded the juvies back in Tank.
Big rain yesteday night, we used the canvas to protect the main pond, and plank to cover filter tanks.
No loss this morning.
Water at 27c to 28c under canvas and 30c after 10 minutes.
Feed with artemias.
Going to pour some chemical against weeds and worm and balance ph.
This product as no details about name of chemicals involved, but it is used in food fish farming .
Will see effect on bio-filter ???

today i loose 3 fish in front of my eyes ???
One in the morning was swimming awkwardly, i tought he was cold 27-28c so i tried to raise the temp by lowering the water inlet in the tank and raising the shading green net up.
he didn t stop getting bad so in last resort i prepared a bath of magic medecine 10 cc for 10l for 1 minute , he survived the bath, but died 5 minutes after, with me trying to reoxygenate him like old style trout releasing (back and forth).
at twelve another one was swimming awkwardly so i thought he was hot and not enough oxygen so i raised the water inlet out of water and lowered the shading net.
hmm he didn t do it.
around four o'clock saw one swimming awkwardly and others hitting the surface like when they are hungry then i thought they were very hungry so i gave them artemias.
hmm no he didn t like them he don t even taste them.
:( he died
i did sump the filtration tanks a bit and pour a bit of new water (100l).
Took a look at 11pm, the rest of the herd was hitting swimming shrimps at the surface by the neon light.
Maybe a night i m gonna find Goldilocks sitting on the wall of the tank teaching monoculus how to get an attitude and drive their humpty dumpty caretaker crazy so they may reach their next life quicker.:screwy:

I may have missed something but are your concrete tanks sealed with a coating over the concrete to keep anything from leaching out of the concrete into the water?
I always thought bare concrete was a nono for fishies, maybe I am wrong...
FishDojo God
09-11-2008, 7:38 AM
Yes, there is a chemical sealant in the last finishing concrete layer.
I think it had time to cure for about 2 years .
Good remark ,thanks.
I m actually making massive water changes plus adding neuprocide after it and do cover the pond when raining.
We treated and added glass shrimps and glass perch (chanda ranga)

Rained hard for a week , covered tank every heavy rainfall.
Water is at 27c
No lost since last week.
Found a smaller Peacock bass in 3rd filter with a white eye and almost all dark body, seems like he was stuck in the System for a while... I released him free in the main tank, hope he don't die from changement.:D
Made water change and added Neuprocide.
Tomorrow i ll look for ammonia tester and a "water heater stick" seen in a shop, i ll consider if it is effective in that tank...?
Called to my Peacock bass seller, he's having 3 sizes: 2 inches 2 1/2 inches and 3 to 4 inches.
Do you think i should buy some again?
Do you think i m good enough at fish keeping?:(
:D I think i ll buy more and continue to experiment :naughty:

Hi
Bought that amonia tester and Juvenile P.Bass a hundred.
Release fifty juv in one of our three 200 sq/m mud ponds these Bass are about 2 inches.
Aquatic plants, goramy, tilapia, frogs, heron and snakes are in or around that pond.
We ll see what happen.
And added another fifty fish of 2 1/2 to 3 inches in the system.
one week now .
Set up my planner for:
-a 1/3 water change every 5 days (followed by neuprocide)
-live shrimps, fish fry added to tank every 3 days (bathed for 1 minute in a product called MK 100 (nothing wrote in english nor about composition))
It rained a lot pH dropped to 7.6.
Because of the rain, the lake is high now and quite muddy and sometimes stinky (rotten grass) i am wondering if it would be wise to make these water changes?
Last made on saturday with surface water, muddy , not so stinky.
This water went clear after one day (due to rain? (like chemical precipitation)? or plants in filtration or shrimps feeding on micros?)
amonia was at 0.25mg/l (less than ok)
Nitrite at <0.3mg/l (ok)
Didn t check water after change :irked:
Temperature 25c to 28c today
Covered pond every heavy rain
Still feed artemias as well
Hey! No dead not even one!:headbang2
Try to make a solar water heater with about 15 meter of clear tubing exposed to the sun, shall i paint it black?? to be continued...
Amonia tester was very difficult to find, did find only two Tetra tester in two different shops with two different prices (a 30% difference) at 30 meters distance...

I think moonsoon is over.
Have to get ready for winter.
I think that Neuprocide kills glass shrimps and glass fish because i have losts everytime I use it.
I have not seen P bass dead in main pond or while opening valve from filtration tanks or floating on surface like it happened.
My dear wife that is doing the feeding witnessed a couples of Pbass with marked stripped head and marked lateral line that are more agressive than the rest of the school. They are part of the new batch and are smaller than the survivors of the last batch.
a cutted-tail pondybilly Pbass ( he use to stare at my wife on surface while she was providing the feeding) disapeared. She misses him...
Added Water Hyacinth in filter tanks and in mud ponds...
Thanks for the Ammonia advice mates , i really think it was the problem along with heavyrain pH changes.
hope

lol,
Hope to take some pics some days.
...but they are swift, the pond is big and round and i don't want to injure them.
Any trick to catch them safely?

One dead today, he was the smallest of the school and seems that he got bitten by the bigger one.
The bigger one like to kill the big shrimps as well; they are striking on them without eating them and about a day a day half after those shrimps die from their wounds.
(Wounds are turning shrimps white progressively up to their death.)

Last week i had 4 deads.
Wednesday:
First dead and we made a water change (1/3), brush algae out of the netty bags for media on 2/3 tanks,
The guy was whitish with 4 others with the same decoloration.
My wife says that he got beaten by the bigger ones as well.
Thursday:
I lost a second and third , i added neuprocide and brush the last media bags.
Discolored ones started to color again.
Friday:
A fourth one died, he was part of the discolored ones.
Proceed to an ammonia test: Yes i had ammonia.
Made a water change again and added water hyacinth.
Interesting facts:
-we had a good weather for several weeks and no problems and now it is raining again and we have problems.
-the size of the dead ones is the same size that we had lost on every batch. Could it be like a juvenile disease the same as pavo for dogs or varicella chickenpox for humans?
Now i have to feed them with glass shrimps more oftenly, every 3 days vs every 4 days, my wife continue to feed them with artemias every days.
My plan was to change water every 5 days but seeing ammonia test it seems not adapted now, so will I have to change water every 3 days???
What about my recycled water system design?

they probably died from iche from the rain changing the water temp.. if they are small and your water is under 87 i don't know if they will make it.. good to hear that you still have a few... ever try laying off the chemicals? in my experience it wind up killing everything ;) to net them try to big soft nets

Hi ,
I meet a stingray :stingray:addict in my region (20 kms). He use to raise Occelaris as well and they did pass the winter without dying in roofed outdoor concrete ponds and in mudpond of around 2 meters deep.
At 140km north of my Fish dojo :) a european is raising koi carps indoor and outdoor, he use to have problems with dead fish when rain falls until he roofed his pond.
Spoke with a fish farmer of the central region told me that twenty years ago no problems with rain but now yes so .
Poluted rain???:barf:
No signs of ich for us, thanks for worrying Boosti.

Wandering if i should transfer the Pbass from my tank to my mud pond.
Getting cold now, around 21c by night.
The dillema is:
Outground concrete tank vs One meter deep mud pond.
Could be a good occasion to take pics of them and their vents.
Bought a frog trap from the grand dady of my wife, very effective, made of bamboo, and traps the frogs without killing them.
Killed a baby king cobra in one of my mud pond today.
Usually do not kill snakes but do terminate them when they are cobras in our around Home.

Made water change. added neuprocide.
Made new system to pump water from lake.
Can t choose if i want to transfer Pea s from concrete pond to mud pond.
I did measured temperature and surface temp of mud pond is about 1 degree c higher...
And water from concrete pond is 1 degree lower than air temp.

We finally made the transfert to the mud pond the 18 th of December we counted 56 juveniles. (see pics)
We bought 150 1 1/2 inch Pea's to stock the concrete pond the 20th.
Here is some pics of fish from the first and second batch that we released in one of our mud pond, we didnt feed them, they did predate on daphnia, gouramis an tilapia fry they sucessfully survive.
We are not sure about the number of survivors in that pond, at best 60 at least 4.
I totally forgot to vent them , sorry for that guys.

150 peas in Concrete tank:
4 days ago we put in tank some live shrimps to make the conversion from artemias to shrimps.
3 days ago we did water change.
Had 2 deads 2 days ago , I opened and look into their stomac and found small shrimps that i haven t being digested. One fish had the stomac broken already.
We stop giving shrimps
2 deads today, nothing in stomac, no trace of ich, water between 22c to 17 c.
Any idea please ???
50 peacocks in mud pond are doing great and sunbath everyday, they are feeding on Gambusias, tilapias, glass shrimps, siamese fighting fish and shrimps.
They rush on small frogs with success and big frogs as well (quite fun to look at as they can t eat them yet) .

Winter is apparently over and our Peacok bass went through it without too much casualities.
We had death mostly on fingerlings in concrete pond.
We had temperature down to 17 c.
A juvenile that was all black and blind ( we named him Zatoichi) has disapeared we do believe it s a heron that ate him.

Dear Channarox , Rio and others,,
Thank you for your support and advices.
Well Rio, how do you know if the batch is Orinocensis or Monoculus?

Hi,
We released in another mud pond the batch we bought a inch and a half in December the 20th.
After a heavy rain fall by night we had an electricity cut all day long.I thought the the battery pumps wouldn t be powerfull enough to support 150 peas.
So by 17h00 I decided to release them in one of our mud ponds, we counted them, didn t vent them :(.
We counted 108 fish of approx. four inches
A storm started as soon as we pour the last bucket of fish in the pond , It was also very dark ....
Was worrying about oxygen depletion, pH differences (from pond to pond to heavyrain)
Electricity came back at 20h00 :chillpill:
Didn t see the peas for 2 days, but now they are doing fine and still in school.
:)
