red tailed cats can be housed in a reasonably big tank.

paroon sharks are another story. they grow big, probably up to 4ft. Not only that, but they are active schooling fishes, which means they are constantly in motion (unlike the red tailed cat). In order to house such a monster properly (multiple of them, actually), you will need a tank size no smaller than your livingroom.

Be nice Zach.

That first guy is strugging like hell with the RTC. :hearts:

I can't imagine how big of a pond you'd need for them at that size.

Apparently the rtcs are good eating.

The paroons are also eaten in their native land.

Speaking of paroons..When I went to my LFS on sunday they had a 20" one in their big display tank. They had no idea what it was so I told them it was a paroon shark and that it was a type of catfish that would reach 40" at a minimum.. They owner freaked and told me I could have it a half price..I turned him down..I really do feel sorry for the fish though..I hope it finds a decent home..

hah, the owner was just trying to pull a sleezy sale on you for a wrecked fish.

I used to be a huge pacu fan... but they're so common, and they're stupid to boot...

If I turn on the lights in the store mine FLIP for no reason.

Watching them carry around an algae pellet is amusing though

paroons are just as stupid... and ugly. Hence my question.

Speaking of Paroons, my LFS got a shipment of them in - 2.5". Ran out of money after buying my Queen angel. If I can only avoid the LFS for like - 2 weeks, they should be all sold and I won't bring a few home..tough to do though.

They aren't colorful, they don't show much behavior, but feeding time is when these guys get interesting. For those that haven't kept one, I agree with you whole-heartedly. Once you keep one though, it somehow becomes one of the fish that you keep on buying every few years.

Mine did well in my 230 for 1.5 years, and I got rid of him when he was around 20" or so, after my RTC and TSN (among other things) died in the 'Great Accident'.

Who doesn't want to keep a great white shark in their tanks? These are seriously the closest things. You can go marine, get a Lemon or Black-tip shark, or you can get a Paroon. Keep one, and you will find out I compare them. Put a bit of meat in the water, and watch him go. Really cool when he is 12"+.

But please God, give me the strength to fight temptation

Paroon sharks or the giant pangasius ( PANGASIUS SANITWONGSEI ) they can grow up to 10ft in the wild. there absoloutly huge.

I've never been a fan of Paroons till these guys started showin up at my LFS. I think they are the balloon type Paroons. This guy has a shorter body than the others in the tank he was with. Are these becoming more available now ? I picked up another 2 at a differen't fish store the other night.

It looks like the short body morph, I wish some of those would show up around me that would be sweet! How much if you don't mind me asking? I should get to experience the power of a adult paroon this summer, I will be fishing in Bangkok, Thailand for them and the Mekong Giant Catfish :) Heres a few other huge catfish pics although they aren't paroons or red tails, piraiba or flavicans I think and the other is the European Wells catfish but I think you'll enjoy ~Trent

with all the great big cat pics posted people still go out and buy RTCs for their 6x2x2 tanks

http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=3771

it makes me sick people must resurch the RTC before they buy them but after seeing pics like thease they still buy RTC just because they look cute when small

the RTC should be banned from being sold in LFS along with the TSN

I don't think they should be banned if you can provide the space for them i.e. large MF ponds 10' dia. or more. In a pond you don't have to worry about them busting through the tank, and they are free to swim in circles instead of into glass walls they can't see. Ponds, a much better environment for your monster catfish. Much cheaper than glass too if you do it right. Just my two cents. Oh man, I hope my hybrids get as big as those wild counterparts of the adults.

If people prove they can take care of a monster fish for life and show prof that thay have a big enought tank at the start none of this crap i will get a bigger tank when i need it then yes ok
