???? What does that mean? I've read that True Altums have not be bred, did I read wrong or am I supposed to buy some book? :)

The book was written by Horste Linke (a noted German Aquarist) who bred several generations of what he claimed to be P Altum. The book is fully illustrated with many photos of the fish, eggs and fry. Descendants of these fish produced by Linke, have been bred by aquarists in Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia and Japan to my knowledge. However, Heiko Bleher believes that to his knowledge, P Altum (the fish from the Orinoco drainage) has not been bred, he also believes that the Linke fish are not Altum, but a similar looking Scalare from the upper Rio Negro drainage which he collected and supplied to Linke. In Linke's book there is a photo of these "Rio Negro fish" they look as much like Altum as the Rio Nanay scalare that is sold as Peruvian Altum, that is, not a lot. There are several photos of what is claimed to be the elusive Rio Negro fish, but none of them that I have seen, could be confused with P Altum or the Linke fish. There are also several reports of fish that are indistinguishable from P Altum in the upper Rio Negro drainage and the Cassiaquiare. It is feasible that Altum could travel from the Orinoco drainage to the Negro catchment via this route, and another from the Inirida to the Negro, these catchments share water under flooding. It has also been suggested (by unsubstantiated rumour) that Linkes fish are the result of Hybridisation between P Altum and a Scalare variant. The justification for this appears to be that the Linke fish do not show the same height of fin as juvenile wild Altum. However the adult fish appear to be indistinguishable. So until such time as all the Pterophyllum of the upper Rio Negro are positively identified and described I do not know with any certainty the answer, there is not enough information available. You did not read "wrong", but the fact of something being written is no guarantee of it's truth.

Thanks, that was my understanding as well.........Altums and Heckel Discus confuse the hell out of me when you start getting into this stuff.
whatever they are they are beautiful
i wish i was back in asia - the water there is so much softer!
i lost 2/3 of my altum group - any words of advice on their care, water parameters, water changes / routine?

HOLY ****! I havent even seen an Altum Angel in Canada! How much did they cost you. I hear there pretty pricey :/
Considering their high mortality rate during transport, they'd be costly.;)

Is true for the WC altum, he mortality rate is very high, that's why i prefer tank bred, but it is so difficult to find tank bred altum. it took me 2 years to get this batch. and i pay a lot for them, arrive 53pcs at 5cm tall, and it is still 53pcs now, some at about 20cm tall now.
I also have another blood line of tank bred altum too, and also 3 batch of wild altum. i will breed with this altums. will cross back hem with wild altum.

Altum Angels is just one of those must haves for many aquarists. They will look majestic once they have grown to about 20-30 cm high or more including fins. There have been reported breeding for some time already from Germany, Japan and more recently Czech and Switzerland. Mostly from Horst Linke's line of captive breed Altum's. The demand for captive bred altum's far exceed the supply, therefore the difficulty in getting any of them. Then there's also the problem with wild caught specimens of Altums. I wish I could get some captive bred ones from Switzerland through a friend who knows the breeder personally. Even so, I still not able to get any. Tough luck.......
