Gorgeous. Puffers are indeed most interesting fish. I wish the colors of the fahaka were a little more bold and pronounced though. Either way, I may still get one!

Definately post up some pictures! :D

Interesting stripes. I hope they become more well-defined as he ages. Mine never got that--he's more mottled.

Is he matching the color of the substrate or do most juveniles look so dark? Beauty by the way - good luck & sorry about last one.

I think (maybe some one like pufferpunk can correct if needed) it is the color of the sand, last one i had was lighter but was on light sand not black.

Thank you.

I believe too that the colors of the sand affect the color of the fahaka to blend in. After all they are lurkers, mine is in a river sand that is color grey, blended his colors to the sand.

Not necesssarily. I bought this hideous gravel in hopes it would bring out some maroon in Filbert's stripes:

As you can see, his stripes are a mottled grey. Love him all the same, especially since his tank is full of tank mates! He's a real mellow fellow. :)

I've been interested in possibly getting one myself. How active are they? I was thinking of having it alone.

You should have it alone--most kill their tankmates. They are lurker/hunters, to not very active (at least mine isn't). Mostly hangs out in their cave.

My fahaka is quite the opposite, he is very active. All of mine have been.

What a fahaka doesn't kill is either a VERY fast swimmer, in a holding pattern for death from the fahaka or eventually going to kill the fahaka.

Not really. I've had my fahakas on everything from black to white sand. Their color is affected mostly by their mood.

Fahaka's are actually freshwater, right?

100% freshwater. They are found in Africa, particularly in the nile hence the name nile puffer.
