Hi spwd,

I think there's something wrong with ur ornate. The body color fades and at the right fin, the stomach looks reddish. Check ur water quality or could be internal infection. Also noticed in the 1st pic....the tail is rotting. Hopefully i'm wrong.

Ciao.

Hi monfish, pingpongs looks faded too then dont you think?

I cant see where the red is but thats probably my eyes,as for his tail fin,it is actually growing back and if there is anything wrong with him its definitely not affected his eating!
Hes a right greedy little poly, since we got him hes got well fat but il keep my eye on him.
Also the gar and the plec in with him are fine too.

Wow I can't believe your Ornate hasn't tried to eat your Sen! He's so tiny!!Are ornates known to eat other fish?

Andri Pogo
07-19-2008, 8:32 AM
depends on the individual fish, my bigger ornate is a fish-eater, the smaller one not.
Just caught the bigger one trying to eat a pleco way too big for him to eat haha

cenecker
07-19-2008, 11:29 AM
yikes pdbrady I really wouldn't keep those polys together. You might continue to be lucky...but then again you might not...my Ornate lived with smaller polys for several months and then one day out of the blue started eating them....you just never know...

Anyway my Avatar is the only crappy pic I have of mine. He was 13" at last measuring I think he might have put on another inch or so since then.

pdbrady
07-19-2008, 1:14 PM
Nah, he's fine. The only fish he's ever eaten was a dragon goby that one night suddenly started having major issues, and I'm pretty sure died first. In my experience, the trick is to keep them very well fed. Now the catch to that is to get them to eat what you want them to. Luckily, I've gotten mine to work with me. They get either whole beefheart, shrimp, silversides, squid, clams, oysters, scallops, so on, every other night, with shrimp pellets filling the days between (since my cichlids eat them, too, so they really just get the leftovers). No problems in about 9-10 months. Him and my smaller ornate pile on each other at all times.

Wow I can't believe your Ornate hasn't tried to eat your Sen! He's so tiny!!

I assume you're talking about the first pic :D. He's in with the one other ornate and 5 sens. The sens are 8", 2x 6-7", 5.5-6", and the little guy about 5". I think it's just that he makes them appear smaller than they really are. :) I'd honestly be more worried about the 2 6-7" sens eating someone else because they were raised by my brother-in-law eating feeders.

For a starter you can't beat a senegal. They readily eat anything, they're active....just easy. They just don't get very big. But I LOVE my ornates!!

Thanks! Shutter speed and lots of light allows me to basically freeze them in their spot. Now keep in mind I would never get the same results with a fish that is doing the mad 6 foot dash across the tank, lol.

Wow. I got mine at 5-6" about 10 months ago, and he's almost 15". You never know what the previous care and feeding was. Kinda like 2 sens I "rescued" a couple months ago. She said she'd had them almost 2 years, and they were pretty good size. Well when I got them, they were actually about 3 and 4" (one of them is in one of the pics with my ornate). I really need to get a new USB cable for my camera and get mine up here. I got him (or her) about 2 months ago at around 5" and he's now closing in on 8". At first he was going after the tail of the knife I have with him, but the knife healed great and hasn't shown any other injuries in about a month.

Awesome fish guys. I can't wait till mine grows into a monster.

btw, a couple years ago there was one that I heard was over 20 years old returned to a local shop (I think it outlived its owner) and it was easily over 20" and thick. Its head was about as big as a man's fist. I wish I'd taken a picture.

Very very long. Ornates are slow growing...

Here is a picture of a "two foot" ornate.......

Disney world animal Kingdom. I never put a tape on him but would put her at the 24" mark.

Yes. Possibly 18". I've heard "claims" of closer to 2', but never seen one or a pic.

This ornate is light based. Very beautiful in its own ways.

Just got a 15 inch big ornate too. Will post pic when he is stable.

The white sand won't be helping the colouration. And watch out for those loaches, they'll be bite-sized shortly because of the difference in growth rates. Keep the ornate well fed and you might be ok though.

I personally love his colour, because he doesnt look like everyone elses.as for the clown loaches he has already had a go at them but hopefully they will be ok till the ornate goes in the big tank, hopefully!

Might be getting another tomorrow!

Cheers steve

Cool pics, but if thats a filter intake that close to the sandy substrate I suggest you move it or put a sponge over it to stop it sucking up sand.
