after a week together in peace they are suddenly fighting, and fighting bad....the lion fish allready has a few broken tentacles and the porcupine puffer is smashing into the walls..!
i knw i need to seperate them,a simple solution...but why are they fighting?
they are properly fed with both live food and dead...and there is always a minnow or two spare in their tank

Maybe they are getting to be the dominate one so what you got do is maybe let them for few times until they calm.
My snakeheads do it all time
You will get a better response here in SW.

not really the best mix of fish. Puffers tend to nip at the lionfish. Same with triggers and lions. cant say for sure thats what it is but I'm thinking its good chance

First things first...
What size tank are they in, how big are they, what's the filtration like and what are they being fed?
As sweeTang21 said...Puffers and Lions don't mix. Sometimes, you can get away with a Porcupine Puffer, but most of the time, it's not gonna happen.

because all of the books, internet resources, and good advice told you not to combine them, but you did it anyways..
That is why.

That tank just screams "FAILURE"!
Your substrate is probably holding in elevated nitrates, the tank is too small, the fish are not healthy (look at their eyes)...both fish have cloudy eyes, the Lion in particular.
You're feeding is inappropriate...Porc Puffers don't even really eat fish...they're invert eaters.

Ok...biggest concern is that filter is junk, for a saltwater tank.
Another...you're now mentioning "puffer babies" and "puffer dad"? How many Puffers do you have?
Your fish are not going to survive in that tank, let alone a bucket. Is there a fish store where you can take them to sell/donate? It's either that, or everything is surely gonna die.

also, bad diet. what kind of flakes? dont give them loaches or minnows either.
also i was wondering, you [or friend] didnt actually breed porc puffers, did you?

if you dont have the money for a larger tank, why not just take the fish back for now, and then when you better off to support these fish, get them again. not to bash or anything but keeping them together and not fixing the problem will only result in unnecessary loss.
IMO shoot for a 125 min, preferably a 150 for the puffer and concentrate on getting that ready for fish. This hobby will be around a long time, theres no need to rush.

Puffers with lions are never a good idea.

my friend did breed them, and a lot of other fishes...if he were still here i would have had no problem with them...

and for taking care of the fish i had to give away the babies...but i also got 4 green spotted puffer babies [i think they are babies coz they are rele small,2 and a half inches each] .....the store manager said they are easier to keep...they are amazing, they keep changing their colour frm white belly to black belly and frm bright green colour between the black spots to dark green...
and again, one of them is such a bully that he started attacking the others and allmost leaving one of them without a tail...i was soo pissed off that i allmost put him into my snakehead tank...but i didnt do it lol....took him to a small fish shop near by and just got rid of him
so any advise and ideas regarding how to handle these little thugs?

What babies??? That substrate you are using is horrible! Porcpuffs require a mminimum of 100g. I'd returm the puff & keep the lion alone in the 55.

Yeah, sorry about that, I only saw the 1st page. As far as the young GSPs, they belong in a SG of around 1.008, not SW--they were probably in FW at the store, so I hope they had a long acclimation. They require 30g ea as adults.

I have to disagree with the view that "Volitans" and "Puffers" cannot co-exist in harmony. In fact, I was surprised to read the comments on this thread!!
I have large "Volitans" that have lived in complete peace with even larger "Arothron" puffers for many, many, years. I have NEVER been given cause to show concern about their compatibility. As was stated earlier in the thread, both species thrive on different diets, so there is no conflict, not even in that field.
However, my mature "Clown Trigger" is more than capable of dissmantling, and destroying the "Volitans" so I will need to address that issue, sooner, rather than later.

But it's a 55g tank.
My Stars and Stripes puffer doesn't mess with my Lionfish. And my puffer is thicker than the lion. I think it depends on what kind of puffer. Porcupines have a tendancy to nip everything in the tank. They love to eat. All day that is. I have a trigger also. A Bluechin. He is bigger than the puffer and the lion and he doesn't bother anyone.pics

I have had both fish and the only help I can offer is to seprate them of course immediately. I stick to the general rule of thimb when purchasing SW predators.....its one per tank. Both the Lion and the Puffer will get too big and territorial to share with anyone else. You may get away with a Blenny, like I am, because they stick to the bottom of the tank.
