I'm getting a new 240 gallon on 2/18/06. I'm looking for input on what I think will work well in this tank. I'm also curious about adding them all at once and growth rates. Maybe add in two groups, 2 weeks apart??

2 Clown knife- a must! Just got em. Itty bitty fellas
1 red bellied pacu
3 -5 silver dollars
2 irredescent sharks catfish
1-2 oscars
1 red devil (midas)
1 columbia shark catfish
1 senegal bichir
1 green terror

clown loaches? Would these wind up being snacks??

I have the clowns in a small tank alone right now. Plan on moving them up over a year into progressively bigger tanks. I'm wondering about adding all together once the clowns are about 10 inches. Just worried about size and compatibility issues. Order of intro to the 240. Can I start some of these guys in the 240 when it's up and running? Like the sharks and silver dollars. All of these fish will come from my LFS as very little guys. I have the green terror now, about 4-5 inches. I have the columbia shark and Senegal now also. Small also.
Tank is 8' X 2' X 2'

Thanks all,
Dave

Looking at this I think I might be overstocked. That would take some time though wouldn't it? Years? Plus I might wind up with only 1 clown knife if they can't get along as adults. I plan to use two fluval 404's, 1-2 aquaclear h.o.b. 500's. I think this comes to 1200-1700 gph turnover depending if I use 1 or 2 of the aquaclears.

Id take off the pacu an only 1 oscar, Clown loachs will be fine IMO as long as theres acouple hiding spots an Id put them in first.

Id say rid the pacu and ID sharks, other than that sounds cool.

Tank delivery got put off one week. Picking it up this saturday. Still don't have the stand built, Grrr. I may be picking up a silver arawona while getting my tank. Then I'll have to redo the stocking list. Oh well. I really like the look of the arowana. Definately not getting the pacu. They just get too honkin big.

congrats on the new tank. I would lose the pacu and both irredesent sharks. Also the clown loaches will need to be around 3.5-4" when you get them because they are very slow growers abd will soon be lunch for the clown knives if they are too small.. other than that should be interesting

I only asked about the silver arowana. Not sure if they carry other ones. It will be a little guy too. 3-4 inches. A couple of you said no to the irr sharks. Why is that? The aro will go in with the clown knifes and a senegal bichir in a twenty gallon. They will all move to a 55 gallon within a month. How big should these guys be before I put them into the 240 gallon with tankmates? And, Should i put the silver dollars in the 240 to grow a bit before adding the others? When the CK's/aro/senegals are bigger, should I add all the other tankmates in at the same time? I know this is alot of questions. But I really am concerned about harmony in the tank and not adding too much bio load at once. All other tankmates will be babies when purchased. Any help appreciated, thanks.

clown knifes grow quick i would just put them in the big tank now might as well little fish can go in a big tank they will grow faster that way anyways thats the best way in my mind silvers will get along with the clowns but b warned though clowns can get pretty mean thats why i had mine grow up with all the other fish and never fed him live food of course i dont like live feeders except crickets that i breed in my basement

I pick up my 240 gallon today. I have to drive to Madison, WI today to get it. I'm leaving about noon. About a two hour drive. Are we there yet??!! I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. I'm visiting a huge fish store down there too. Maybe picking up an arowana, and who knows what else? My wife was assuming I was putting this monster 8' tank on her dresser! LOL!!! To my surprise, she has not asked what I spent on the tank yet. The 240 is coming from glasscages in TN. I might be buying a 75 or 90 gal while at the big fish store as well. I'm glad I pay my credit card online and the wifey doesn't see the statement.

Updated list

3 clown knives (may only be one as adult depending on demeaner)
1 oscar
1 senegal bichir
1 red snook
1 silver arowana (waiting for answer from lfs on ordering)
1 green terror (already have him)
6 silver dollars
2 Severums (already have them, 4 actually)
1 fire eels ( waiting for answer from lfs on ordering)
1 Jack dempsey

If no on the pleco, what would be a good ground cleaner from the messy eaters??
Any suggestions??
My top priority is the clown knife, senegal bichir, fire eel. What would some of you mix with them??

I nixed the midas, sounds to aggressive as adult. I nixed the columbian shark (brakish as adult). Nixed the pleco from someone's advise about being a problem with my bichir. Nixed the pacu and irr sharks as well. Bring on the suggestions friends!! :headbang2

THanks all,
Dave

clown loaches would be gone the next morning!!
iridescent sharks are going to be fish food too depending on size
especially if you get a silver arrowana
add 3-5 fish every week until they are all in there
put the smaller ones in first!
