I know they are through out the whole united states. I am looking for a smaller one that could be possibly acclimated to fish tank settings and could be shipped to me. This is my dream native fish and i know a few of you have cought them on here.

I wish I could help, if you find a source for fingerlings let me know I would love to have one or two.

PM sent. Check the max size, I believe these get fairly large. I'll see if I can find it.

Certain times of the year I can catch 1-2" fish but some times not. It depends on the level of the river if I find the fish. Why are they your dream fish? They are really ugly and have a horrible smell to them! A cooler fish that I catch is called a hi-fin buffalo or quill back buffalo. Kinda like a Chinese hi-fin shark but much better looking IMO. They stay small too, rarely larger then 15" and 3 pounds. Here is a link. The ones I catch are much darker with a purple sheen to them. very attractive fish.

Well i mean i live in Florida so of course i catch saltwater drum all the time. I think it would be really neat if i had a freshwater drum in my tank. I know some people dont get it. Just like i dont get why people want a small LMB because i have had them and they are mean as hell and territorial.

That buffalo is pretty cool though. Never seen them before.

Drum do get BIG. A group I'm with just got a 12 pounder electrofishing yesterday. We brought him back for dissection. I've done drum dissections before, but it's a whole new experience on a fish that big. They are really cool fish. They have enlarged otoliths often called "lucky stones" as they have an "L" marking on the side of them and really weird pharyngeal teeth in their throat used to crush food (in the case of the big guy today, pretty much entirely freshwater clams). His otoliths were about the size of a nickel. They would be an interesting fish to keep. The only one's I've seen in captivity however were at the Toledo Zoo and they were in very poor condition, very skinny and sickly compared to wild drum I've seen. Quill-back suckers are also really cool fish.

26 lbs?! That's huge. Do you have any idea what the TL on that was?

They do get very large and I've heard of them doing poorly in captivity. I've thought about trying to raise one myself but I haven't personally seen any in captivity and have had trouble finding reliable information on captive care.
