Is this just a melanistic morph or a different species or just a marketing ploy?

looks like a different species to me as some of them are real thick. i've seen something like that in a lfs near me and they had them labeled as blackworms.

Yeah, they do look thicker and their heads look smaller, maybe it is a different species.

any one notice the vid was shot in black and white? And for the record there is only 1 species of Erpetoichthys calabaricus

It doesn't look black and white, when their "noses" break the surface you can see some reflections of color. Or maybe i'm just imagining it. I may order some anyway, just to see what they look like.

way too thick of a body and the movement is more serpentine than a ropefish.

those look like caecilians (Typhlonectes natans) which are amphibians, they also have a hard time competing with fish for food so they are best kept in a species tank.

yep, wrong scientific name given, but these are commonly called rope fish as well

another reason why common names usually suck

Tezr and myself talked about these a while back, yes they are Typhlonectes natans.

Wouldn't it be sweet if they were melanistic ropes?? :D

I kept a large 20" one with my bichirs and cichlids and it competed just fine for food. It was eating hikari gold sinking just like everyone else, and it was a good eater.

Really? That sounds cool, was it mean?

No it was actually really dumpy and almost oblivious to anything going on that didn't involve finding food. there were times it would tie itself in a knot around the spray bar, or if it ate floating pellets, ti would float for a few hours haha

Very cool animal, I recommend it.
