Hello Everyone,

I have one question, and one question only right now. If I were to put a Dojo Loach in with a Senegal Bichir, would the Bichir eat the Loach?

Thanks,
Shane

Well, may I ask, what is the largest Dojo Loach I could possibly get? Seeing how the Senegal, while a slow grower (which I intend on getting them when they are like, 2.5") I know that if it can fit in its mouth it can be eaten. I've heard Dojos being anywhere from 8"-14". What sounds more realistic to you?

The largest dojo (M. anguillicaudatus) I have ever seen was just under 10". It was about as big around as my thumb. I have seen weatherfish (M. fossilis) a little bigger but not much. Most of either that I have seen have been closer to 8".

Well then, a weather loach. Do you think that a normal sized Senegal Bichir would pose much of a threat?

I have not kept the bichirs except ropefish so can't be sure.

Dojos are used as feeders in Japan and Korea. They don't grow too big. I used to catch them in the wild when I was a kid and never saw one bigger than 11".

So I suppose that Weather/Dojo Loaches would not fair too well in a 75 Gallon with 2 Senegals then huh? Oh well...got my hopes up in keeping a few of these guys. Anyway, thanks alot!

Shane, :)

PS...If anyone can tell me different I would greatly appreciate the information. The only reason I decided to ask before anything was that Senegals get 12" max usually in Aquaria, but Weather/Dojo Loaches, well...I've heard their max is anywhere from 4"-14". I just needed some comfirmation on the max size of the loaches. Thanks again!

Don't you mean, "can anyone tell me what I want to hear?"

bichirs are not uber p[redators like channas etc.

The endlicheris and lapradeis are a little more aggressive and predatory, but I think a senegalus would be fine with anything at least half it's size. I have an 8 inch senegalus and he's been in with fish in the 3/4/5 inch range and never attempted to eat them.

Oh really?
Well, thank you for the information! I'm just trying to hear as many views as possible before I even think about a purchase. So thank you, everyone, except Richie.

Thanks again,

Shane,

PS...RumbleSushi, could you tell me more about your experiances with Senegals? I'm quite interested in learning more about them.

I've owned a few different bichirs and senegalus are one of my favourites. They are underrated because they look more boring than the other bichirs.

But they are more active and personable than the others, they are the only ones that have taken notice of me so far. I think they have cute faces too, despite their lack of pattern.

The one I have now used to sometimes come and sit on my hand when I was rearranging the plants etc

They also simply swim more and cruise the tank more than any other bichir I've had.

I recommend them a lot. A nice, non aggressive but interesting and personable predator that does not get too big.

They eat anything too, not hard to feed.

Ah, Thank you so much.
I had no idea that Senegals would actually get to a point with their owner that they will sometimes come around, and "hang out" with you. I love a fish with personality. What I guess attracted me to them a while back was the fact that they looked more Dragon/Dinosaur like than a fish. I mean, somebody says the word fish, and most people usually just think Goldfish or something.
Thank you again for your help!

But when the ornatapinnis grows to 2ft then it will be different, alot of young fish get on well together, it's a different story when they are much larger. A 11" fish against a 24" fish with a big gob is a different story. :woot:
