Well after reading up on these interesting creatures for a bit I had to have one of my own. I remembered Petsmart had some SMALL Senegals (They had them titled "Dinosaur Bichir") in stock so I went yesterday and got myself one for my Bday. It is in my 20g long right now with 7 Corys which I know won't work long term obviously but I want to grow it out in here for now. I'd say it's about 2.5" right now, give or take a little. They are really cool fish and it was only $6, which I didn't think was to bad. I may go get it a couple friends to grow up with. The girl said it was the first one she has ever sold and they had at least 4 more in stock. I only have one photo for now and I'm lucky I got this one, literally the second I snapped the picture the lights went out for the night. It seems to really enjoy night time, I have a small night led on one side of the tank and I watched it cruise all around as I went to bed last night.

I know it's not the best photo, I will try to get another tomorrow.

Full tank photo, it seems to like it.
From my research my tank should parameters should be ok for this little fella but I'll post anyway. Ammonia 0.0, Nitrates <40ppm, Nitrites 0ppm, PH 7.5, Temp 79*.
I feed the tank sinking Shrimp Pellets and Hikari sinking wafers "For bottom feeders", along with a few flakes for the few guppies who call this tank home and a little bit of Mysis shrimp. Should this be adequate for now?

Just got my first poly about a month ago. He's a senegal, about 6". Awesome fish, definitely going to get more and different species of them when I get a larger tank.
Most amusing fish i've owned by far.

My baby senegal that I bought at Petsmart is by far the reason I started loving fish. Mine was maybe an inch when I got him though.
Yours is so cute I love them when they still have the stripes and your aquascape is awesome.

Thanks for the compliments. :)
Yes, I already want more. I was just in my room and once again it is cruising all around in the area lit up by the night time LED. I may have to go to Petsmart tomorrow to get it a friend to grow up with.
In the future I could definitely see myself picking up some of the less common ones, the more I look around here the more I want one of them. They are unique fish for sure.

Oh I definately agree. I have had mine for about 8 months now. He begs whenever I look at the tank and gets really crazy if I (or any of my friends) looks at it for too long and he's not getting any food. Its quite comical.

The excitement and captivation of your first poly is a great feeling; enjoy it as much as possible :)

You will get addicted. I got my first (ornate) in June and I already have 3 (added 2 sens). I'm really thinking about a delhezi, but that would definitely be the last one until I upgrade the tank.

Yep, but it isn't quite big enough to eat a whole wafer or shrimp pellet. So it kind of shakes it until a little piece comes off. Even for being so small it's got a pretty big mouth though.
Here are a couple more photos.

Well no friends for him today, I went back to Petsmart but the only Senegal they had left was dead as a door nail. I wonder if the others died too or someone bought them, they had like 6 2 days ago. Wish I would have bought more then.
Then I went over to a LFS and they had a REALLY nice Ornate that was around 4" and looked very healthy. However the price tag was a little high for me, $50 for the little guy. I thought that was pretty high, am I right in thinking that? This stores prices are typically pretty high, so I didn't want to take the plunge without checking here. If it's a good deal I may go get it but I was also concered it was likely big enough to eat my baby Senegal.

Woo Hoo got another poly for my new guy to grow up with, it was the smallest they had at my new favorite LFS (It's strictly a fish store and it shows, way better selection and prices but not the best hours but I'll deal with that). They had a gorgeous 8" Senegal and 6" Albino Senegal but those were far to big. Anyway I was so happy to see a small Senegal sitting next to the Albino for only $10. I am slightly concerned as it's quite a bit larger than my current baby so I *HOPE* he doesn't get eaten but I don't think it should be an issue. Anyway here are a few crappy pictures of my new guy.

I am not positive it's a Senegal but for the price I doubt it's anything else. It was just marked "Poly". If anyone can confirm I'd appreciate it, I know the pictures aren't the best. :)

shouldnt be much of a concern.
my baby senegals are doing fine with a bigger endi.
and your tank seems to have plenty of hiding spaces too.

Thanks for the input thats what I'd hoped, so far so good. I broke up a tiny shrimp into small pieces and the new guy already went to town on it. He was like a little bulldog tearing up the little pieces. Then he was sitting in that Wisteria plant thats in the middle of my tank growing out of that log, I presume waiting for a guppy to swim by. It was hilarious I couldn't find it for the life of me then I look up and it's just sitting there in the plant.

Belive me, ones you try bichirs you need them in your tanks 4 ever :D
when my polys die after 10 years (the big girl jumped out of the tank and the other one i don't have any idea, may be he was sad or that f.... pleco :irked:) i decide to try other kinds of fish, but no one gets close to polys, so now im back and just got a baby senegal 2" (its the only one i can find over here :() and im enjoing it 100% he is a little pig, just put him in the tank and 5 minutes later he was hunting the brine shrimp that i put in the tank :naughty:

Yes, they are quickly climbing up my favorite fish list. I sit and watch them scoot around the tank, they are quite amusing.

Well sad news, I lost my little Poly today. :( He was just cruising last night but when I went home for lunch today I noticed my BioWheel Mini was just flowing really slow so I pulled the inlet tube to look inside, and what do I see. But my little poly all smashed inside and obviously not alive. I feel bad because it's my fault but I would have never thought he would try to swim into the dang inlet. The filter is rather old and the pickup strainer has been smashed a few times moving it. So it's got some gaps but I never would have though in a million years the fish would squeeze his way in only to get sucked into a plastic impeller death trap. I will be covering the strainer in foam tonight to prevent this from happening again but the other Poly I got this weekend is bigger so I doubt he'd fit but I'm still covering it, lesson learned I guess. :(

Poor guy.

Filter inlet of death, take note if you have something like this. You'll want it covered.
The bigger Poly is doing fine, but less a freind.
