real vs. fake

You need to research this before you try it. The worst thing to do is buy a few plants without the right setup. They'll just die and ugly up your tank. Planted tanks are kind of an all or nothing thing. It is definitely worth it to try if you do it right.

once you do get the hang of keeping real plants alive you will never go back to plastic, that's what happened to me, a friend brought me some real plants and said "here put these in your tank", so i did and within 2 months all of my plastics were replaced, and i will never use them again

unless you have fish that will think of your plants as food, keeping live plants is very easy, probably even easier than its made out to be-there are some very hardy species out there. they are worth it. of course you can do a fifty-fifty of both real and fake, to help bulk out your tank. i'd go with real though

It depends on what fish you are wanting to keep. As long as you have fish that won't dig up your plants, real plants are the way to go. A 10 gallon would be a good way to start with a planted tank.

Make sure that you have proper lighting and filtration.

Fake plants - Usually cheap, never dies, easy to clean and maintenence.

Real plants - Helps clean water and looks better.

I used to have fake plants too, and it bothered me to look at it. REAL all the way.

If you havent tried real plants before, start with some anachris or somethign cheap. They dont require too much light and grows rapidly.

i agree w/ jimk

one more thing planted tanks like reef tanks are more about the plants/corals
fish come 2nd

imo if you keep freshwater fish and dont have a planted tank you are missing out
