:ROFL::headbang2:headbang2 So i keep hearing about how these guys are generally pretty rare, and from what ive noticed alot of ppl want them but cant get them. Well i just got the go ahead from my gf, and i just bought a proven breeding colony of 1m and 5 females. the funny part is i wasnt even looking for them, i just happened to find them while i was doing my normal pc surfing. Anyway i just bought them like 5 min ago, so i dont even know when they will be shipped but i will update.
oh and for anybody who read my thread for what to do with my spare 45 gallon, well this is it.

Ya i noticed that but i have a feeling that tydus didnt spring for the good shipping hence it was lost in the mail, but damn these fish better be worth it, this is gonna be spendy, dude wants hella for shipping and its not even overnight

dude wants over twice as much money for ups 2nd day air then dhl would charge for next day, seems a bit shady to me

i was also thinking about fulu too, but kyoga seem alot harder to get, and i plan on breeding them so they were the obvious choice for me (dude says some of the females are holding right now)
Hey guys, finally back on, my power over here was out, the manager had to turn off my electricity and work on the house. I took an overload of pics. By the way, the ones pictured aren't the actual ones you're getting just to let you know. The ones I lost in mail were those....... I would've snatched them again, but he was lying about the auction.

I am tydus1 on aquabid. Check his feedback. I gave him a positive for refunding me. USPS lost the fish in transit and the auction I won also had the same pics stating that the fish pictured were the actual ones. They were sent to me but got lost. Don't get me wrong Jim is a great guy, but how do you explain why he reuses the pics over and over again stating that the fish you are getting are the ones pictured? He has done that atleast 3 times. That's why I didn't want to get them again, since he is using false information. ;)
Does this look familiar to you?

well if you look at the pic its obvious there is more then one male in the pic, and hes only selling groups with 1 male, dont get me wrong you could be right but its definitely possible its a pic of some of his group

That's because he sent me two males. :) And why would Jim say that you are getting the colony pictured when he sent me them? Doesn't make sense at all. You're obviously getting another colony, not the one pictured. Jim shouldn't be advertising his sales with false info.

The pics are being stupid and aren't uploading. I took major pics. And by the way guys, my kyogas just bred. I have a female holding and I separated her into the 10. I got pics of that also. :) All I need to do is find a way to upload the darn pics. :irked: The male was sweet looking. He gets pretty red when he breeds. Good luck with the kyogas, when are you getting them?
jhutch
08-30-2008, 11:16 PM
Try uploading them to photobucket. That's what I ended up having to do to post pics on here.

mondays labor day so he cant ship till tuesday, so it will be here on thursday. Can you take video, most digital cameras can do it then you can just post it up on utube
That's great, best of luck for you. Now there are 3 members with kyoga flamebacks here on MFK!!! :woot: Anyways, pics are up and are crap..... so check out my new thread. LOL. I'll try to get pics of him when he is fully colored when the time comes.

Old stuff......... As a Victorian enthusiast, why wouldn't I know :D Part of the reason why I love keeping victorians, knowing that you are helping a species out is awesome! I would also like to see how the kyogas look when mahemaheman85 gets them.

lake victoria is going down the crapper due to perch and over logging, pretty soon we wont be able to get anything out of it:(, and yes i had actually known about that too, that was actually one of the reasons i wanted them. Hell i figure between me, bre and tydus, and the fact that bre's, and tydus's are already breeding and the one's im suppose too be getting on thurs are apparrently already holding, hell maybe we can make a difference, cause personally the idea of what there doing to that lakes environment really F##cking pisses me off :angryfire .

But on a happier note, i moved all my tanks around yesterday to make room for the 45, which i got all cleaned up and set up, but the tank wont be ready till i get paid on friday, my gf gave me the thumbs up on some major spending this weekend :headbang2:headbang2, im gonna get a canister pump for my 55, and a bunch of new toys for the 45 :D.
This is getting exciting...Can't wait to see your's!!! On a down side I lost 1 of females...it was the one that was holding. I have no clue what happened to her. But on an upside I still have 5 females and another one of them is now holding...keep your fingers crossed for me.

Wow, that sucks man..... You should give Jim atleast one more day though. Don't worry, my case was worst. I had to wait a week for the fishes but they never arrived and was declared lost. Luckily I got a 100% full refund. Just wait one more day and if they don't come, you have every right to be mad since you paid for good shipping. Plus remember, it can always be the shipping's fault, not the shipper. Keep that in mind. ;)
P.S. I know that I'm a nice guy. :headbang2

ya just one problem with the whole waiting one more day( which i made a aware to the seller before the sale) i have to work till 5pm everyday for the next 3 weeks, hence why i took today off and payed the good shipping, just so this woudnt happen
So if they do happen to come tomorrow it wont matter cause no one will be here :(

Yep, I understand man. LOL. My brother took a whole day off just to wait for his fishes to come and they did. In my opinion Fedex is the best choice, which is what me and my brother have been using for quite a while. I'd give Jim one more day, he's a great guy and all. So, have you talked to Jim about this?

ya i think the closest word i used to profanity in the email was "peeved" lol, i haven't talked to him since the 30th when i payed him, and as far as i know it could still be ups's fault, i guess i wont know until he tells me if he sent them on tuesday like we agreed or not, but ups said they dont have it, so im kinda starting to think he mite of shipped it on Wednesday
Don't the sellers provide you with a tracking # once the fish ship? I certainly would, just like any other place gives you tracking info...these sellers certainly should also.

:iagree: But some shipping companies like USPS for example don't update there tracking number for sh*t!!! They only update when the fish arrive!!! :irked::irked::irked: Do you know if UPS updates their tracking numbers regularly? Fedex is most reliable and always updates and they keep you in touch 24/7 which is why I use Fedex all the time.

I agree UPS sucks. They lost some stuff I shipped a year ago, I tried to claim it on the insurance that I purchased and they wound up sticking me with the bill. I have not used them since.

I'm talking about USPS which equals United States Postal Service, UPS is United Parcel Service. I've never had experience with UPS, but I've heard of bad things and good things. But all I know is that USPS sucks!!!

:ROFL:My bad, guess it would help if i learned to read!
Interesting fact! I do have a friend that works for UPS, and when you ship something live (fish, reptiles, etc...) with USPS they give it to UPS and UPS actually carries it to the Post office in the receivers area, then USPS delivers it. Just what my friend told me.
edit: I do know what EACH of the acronyms means, I just misread it, no need to be that way tydus....guess what I even know that FedEx is short for Federal Express!

terrific! I know it is tough, but can you get a picture
:ROFL::ROFL: Stop putting pressure on me. I'll get pics when the fry are fully developed. The reason why majority of the eggs were fungused were because I was gone for two days. I expected my brother to care for them, but I came home to dead eggs. I managed to save the hatchlings that made it. My female is doing good. I saw her release her fry, but they still have their yolk sacs.

soo i worked something out with jim last night, since he was gonna refund me the same amount he was asking for his other group, i told him to just hold onto that money and i will have the remaining amount (shipping) for him on the 19th, so he pulled the aution, and that will put me at 2m 7f, An actually colony!! And i have a feeling everything will go alot smoother considering all the mishaps that happened the first time, wish me luck lol ;)

It's a kyoga flameback. My males looked like that when they were stressed out when I 1st got them. Give them some time and I guarantee you that he will color up. ;) I'll try to get pics of my guys to reassure you. My dominant male looks sweet! Jim gets his kyoga flamebacks from a guy in Florida who breeds them and supplies sellers with, so they are legit.

Well i spoil my fish, they all get fed twice a day, hbh flake frenzy, hbh african cichlid attack, hikari cichlid staple. And i feed them frozen brineshimp (by hand :D), and dryed baby shrimp probably at least twice a week. Oh and sometimes ill throw a algae wafer in there and they all go nuts for it.

Nice selection of foods. Just don't feed them food with too much protein, they can get bloat easily if so. I feed my fish New Life Spectrum exclusivley with algae wafers here and there to back up their diet. :) As my babies grow I will be feeding them New Life Spectrum Growth Formula backed up with Hikari 1st bites and algae wafers.

Well, once we start having fry, we'll have to do some trading...I'd love to diversify the lines some. Honestly, my goal isn't really to make money on this (although that would be nice too!) it is to spread this fish out so it's not as rare...it's a shame some of these amazing fish are so endangered. My local club does a bit to try to help endangered species, to get breeding programs going, and I'd like to dedicate a few tanks to this if I can in the future.

No colors as of now, to be honest I am quite disappointed with their colors. I might move them to the 60 gallon where the nyererei are at and move the nyerereis to the 40. I'm going to see if that will help them since there is more area and territory. The 40 gallon is exposed in the living room where alot of people are at and they get scared easily. The nyerereis aren't scared and display better, so I think I might just do that.

Well better than Dave's in that Greg is in the inner circle of the fish world and will receive specimens to breed that are not readily available in the pet trade. There was a club meeting at Greg's house not to long ago and the speaker for the evening was none other than Dr. Les Kaufman. Dave also gets some of his Vics from Greg. Greg is the source of the Kyogi and the Xmas Fulu that Dave had recently. I must also mention that Dave has been able to supply Greg with some highly sought after fish as well so it is a 2 way street.

You asked for pics guys so here they are!!!! My pics I took of my kyoga flamebacks myself for once and some nyererei growouts as well as the juvie redshoulder male :D. My male is still not acting right...I posted some pics on another site I trust 110% and the general concensus is possible parisites. I thought maybe bloat but this has been going on for 1 and 1/2 weeks and they said they see no signs of bloat. It is kinda the same story as the previos post on here titled malawi bloat. He and 1 female I saw had white stringy pooh. I am going to catch him hopefully tonight along with a couple girls and treat him...hopefully he'll come around.

Mike no money changed hands. As far as the quality I have talked to other people that know the guy and know the strain and said they are nice quality so that i'm not worried about. Thing is how does a breeding group die when the power goes out but nothing else did?

Easy now fella. Not saying anything about your fish just conducting my own research. I got a trio from a friend that are from Greg's line and my male shows a horizontal stripe all the time. I also got a single male from the auction but I have not looked up the seller yet but that one does not show the horizontal line as prominent as the other one does. Here is a pic of the male I have now that was taken by my friend.

Under common names on cichlid-forums they have 2 fish listed as Kyoga flamebacks. 1 is a haplochromis and the other is a xystichromis.
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=1550
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/species.php?id=2611
According to Greg's article on the Xystichromis
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/articles/x_kyoga_flameback.php
Xystichromis sp. "Kyoga flameback" has an elongated, laterally compressed "haplochromine" body shape. The cranial profile is straight or slightly convex with large eyes and a medium sized mouth. There is a broken and thickened mid lateral black bar running the length of the body from the caudal peduncle to the gill plate. In regards to male coloration, the top portion of the body, including the head is scarlet red. The lips and lower portion of the head is blue. The bottom portions of the flanks are lime-green and yellow. The dorsal fin is red foremost fading to blue at the rear while the caudal fin has blue streaks at the base flowing to completely red at the extremities. The anal fin is white-blue becoming red at the outer portion. The pelvic fins are jet-black. There is a straight black bar beginning at the corner of the lips and continuing through the eye. Female coloration is an unassuming tan-brown with the same markings found on the males. The lower jaw protrudes slightly beyond the upper. Bicuspid dentition is found in all but large adult males who show some unicuspid teeth in the outer rows. Wild populations are opportunistic insectivores who diet also consists of plant matter. Both sexes have an adult size of 12cm. These aspects are all consistent with the genus Xystichromis. Further research may result in a different or completely new designation, but for the time being, this seems to be the best fit.
http://www.cichlid-forum.com/photos/art_x_kyoga_flame02.jpg
According to the Aquabid add you linked to earlier it did not state that these were xystichromis sp. "Kyoga flamebacks" just that they were Kyoga flamebacks.
One of your females has the distint horizontal line as does Mayhemman's male. The pic of your now decesed sub dom male looks more like an xystichromis than your dom male from the pics. What is the name of this breeder in Florida?

You do realize that the two links you posted of the flamebacks are the same species right. The 1st link is listed as haplochromis all red "lake nawampasa", an old term for and a synonym to the xystichromis kyoga flameback. The 2nd link is the same thing, just newer and up to date. By the way, the ones that were on on aquabid are true Xystichromis kyoga flamebacks. Jim gets them from a reputable seller as well, down in Florida. Plus, I didn't get them on aquabid did I? I originally did, but they were lost in transit, so I ended up getting them from a different seller. :grinno: And I don't appreciate it much that you are showing me all of these old things that I already know and pointing stuff out to me. Trust me, I ain't no newbie on this kind of stuff. I know who Greg is and I look up to him as an inspiration. I do my research and have been a Victorian enthusiast for 2 years, I know my stuff. My male does have his bar, it shows on and off, plus he is very washed out in the pics. I don't know why you are doubting that my male is a true kyoga flameback, but please keep it to yourself. I don't want this to end up being a controversial topic. I want to rather discuss about Victorians with friends on MFK rather than arguing. Thank you. Nice kyoga flameback by the way, I remember seeing that picture on another board though.

Why do you hide the ID of this great mystery seller in Florida? If you are so confident that your fish are in fact true Xysitichromis sp. Kyoga Flamebacks may I have your permission to post your pics on HCCC for verification from GAS or Samaki?
Also in your pics it appears that your fish has yellowish lips instead of the normal blue coloration. Is this due to the digital image?
I have a lot of vics and I personally do not care if yours are xystichromis or haplochromis or hybrids. I was just asking some questions because yours looked different from the ones I have seen in person or that were verified. It could just be the settings on your camera or who knows what else. I was also curious why yours had such distinct vertical bars as opposed to others that the horizontal bar is the more distinctive one.
The differences could be locality differences. The fish in the haplochromis link was collected from Lake Nawampasa.
If you take a look at the pics you linked from the guy in Canada they also look different than your fish. We locally have 2 seperate Xystichromis species being bred. Both the sp. "flameback" and the sp. "Kyoga Flameback". There are differences in both of these fish. Just as there are 2 species of Haplochromis sp. "Fire" and sp. "Uganda Fire Red" that look simular but are different.
Here is a post from cichlid forums to further complicate things.

You are comparing apples and oranges.
The pictures of Haplochromis (Xystichromis) sp. 'Dayglow' on cichlid-forum and on Daves site are the same as they are my pictures.
The pictures of Haplochromis (Xystichromis) sp. "flameback' on Daves site is my picture and it is very much like the picture in the cichlid-forum profile.
Haplochromis (Xystichromis) sp. "Kyoga flameback' is a completely different species.
Welcome to the world of Victorian cichlid name confusion.

You're not getting the point, I know my vics, I ain't stupid, the ones I have are not the ever so common xystichromis flameback but the kyoga flameback. Remember there is always the lighting of the tank that makes his color look different. Maybe that's why. And his lips are blue, not yellow. The tank and the lighting itself are very old, passed down from my brother-in-law back in the 90's. My guys look very close like structureguy's kyoga flamebacks on his site, african-cichlid.com. Look on his site, does his kyoga flamebacks have the bars? I don't think so, because its either the lighting or something. Do you have doubts that his aren't true kyoga flamebacks as well?
As for the pics, I will allow you to use these pics that I just took. These are not his true colors and the pics don't even compare to him as in person. Very washed out.

Compare them with structureguy's kyoga flamebacks, mine are very similar and remember, he used different camera settings and light setups.

from the post I linked earlier..
"You are comparing apples and oranges.

I guess it is just my eyes but none of the fish I see listed as Xystichromis sp. "Kyoga Flameback" look like your fish.

Remember not all fish always have to look like eachother. It maybe because of other elements, like lighting, camera settings, the fish's mood, etc. By the way, my fish are not the xystichromis flameback for the last time, they are xystichromis "KYOGA" flameback. But you still haven't answered my question, are you doubting that structureguy's kyoga flamebacks are fakes as well?
Here is a link to a member's kyoga flameback picture. Very similar to mine, and it's not even showing his bar. Are you doubting that his male isn't a kyoga flameback as well huh? I assure you that it is a kyoga flameback. Don't judge a book by its cover. ;)

Can you also give me a link to that forum you posted on for an ID?
Why am I hiding the ID of the seller? If you want it so bad then pm me. ;)
Yes up until I read this post on HCCC I would have doubted that they were sp. "Kyoga Flameback".

Sorry you feel that there has been some attack on your intelect but I have never stated anything about it. OK since you know your vics what makes yours the sp. "Kyoga Flameback"? What are the distinguishing factors that seperate the two species?
This is the description I have found of the sp. "Kyoga Flameback"
"Xystichromis sp. Further research may result in a different or completely new designation, but for the time being, this seems to be the best fit."
What critera are you using to determine the species of your fish?

See what I mean, this is getting very controversial. It's this simple, I paid good money for them from a very good seller and I expect them to be it. Obviously they are not xystichromis flameback. They just don't fit it, as said before, you are comparing apples and oranges. If you were to see my fish in person, you would notice. He has a very red face with blue lips and does show his bar at times when he is stressed. I am not able to capture his true form and colors. I wish I was able to, but I guess I don't have the right camera and lightings.
What makes my fish different from structureguy's besides different lighting and camera settings? Why do you continue to disbelieve that mine aren't kyoga flamebacks?

Well my shift at work is over. I will attempt to capture some photos of the 2 male xystichromis sp. "Kyoga Flameback" that are in my aquarium at home. I know that the lone male I got at the auction has more blotches in other areas of the body which I feel detract from the looks of this fish.
You state that the fish shows his horizontal bar when stressed but I was under the impression that this should be the reverse and show his bar when in a non-stressed state. I have never stated that you do not have a sp. "Kyoga Flameback". I have stated that your fish does not look like any of the pictures that I have seen that are labeled as xystichromis sp. "Kyoga Flameback". Your fish may well be a sp. "Kyoga Flameback" but if it does not show the traditional pattern is this something want to spread into the hobby?

He shows his bars here and there. I just sent you a pm of a shot I got with his bars comparing it with Kevin's pics. What do you think now? Does Kevin's kyoga flameback show his bars all the time? Does that mean I can't keep them and share this awesome species of fish with fellow hobbyists?

sure share all you want. Your fish and Kevin's fish came from the same breeder apparently so that explains why they do not look like the typical sp. "Kyoga Flameback" It is quite possible they cam from different regions or whatever. I happen to prefer the ones I have seen and have been lucky enough to acquire, that happen to show the horizontal bar with almost no vertical barring.
Where are the pics? :popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:
I found this.

Even patrick says they are kyoga flamebacks. He is the guy from Canada whom I posted pics of his colony and he is an expert as well. If there are other forums you have posted of my pics, may I please have links to all of them?
