I currently have a 55 gallon long aquarium with 2 vail tail oscars they are both around 3-4 inches long and i have a spotted gar in a hospital tank now (i got him from pet supermarket for free i saw he was dying so i asked if i can just take him home all his fins were missing compleatly he could hardly swim and 3 to 4 weeks later his back fin is 100% and the two little fins in the front are starting to show so i basicly saved his life ^_^ oh hes about 4 inches long) well i wanted to know if it would be a good idea to put them together and what i have to do for them not to fight
and yes i know later on in the future i have to upgrade to a bigger tank im thinking 150 gallons *shruggs*
if i dont want them to fight if they are tell me what i have to do in order for them to get along

most would say cichlids + gar = no go.
but it really depends on the oscars.
i personally wouldnt do it.
what would be the dimensions of the 150?

well i have to say i love the gar more than the oscars but i do love my oscars so it would kinda be heart breaking to have to get rid of them specially because i just got them not too long ago
the demensions of the 150 would be 72 x 18 x 28
theres no specific set up that i can do to the tank so they wont mess with eachother cause i dont wanna keep him in the hospital tak for that much longer i feel like im depriving him XD hes in a 5.5 gallon now =/

the answer is simple.......
get a tank for the gar and leave the oscars where they are! :grinno:
better to get a tank with more width.
something like 2.5 to 3 feet width is good.

I have an oscar (full grown) living with fully grown alligator gars and RTCs. I guess it is temparament of individual fish and space availalbe.
Check out the still-alive oscar (for long time)

PS: don't know if your oscars would pounce on your weakened gar though ... roll the dice!

First thing I have to say is at 4 inches the gar really would not have developed pectoral or ventral fins. This is actually normal...
second gar do not typically fight with anything. (Some Atractosteus behaviors aside) You are more likely to have something pick on a gar than one of them pick on it. there are exceptions....
Oscars are a bad idea and Veil tail oscars worse for other reasons than typical oscars are.. The Gar will in this case likely look at those bumbling deformed oscars and will most likely eventually see them as food.
Not a good mix and not something one can "train out" of the gar....

no the thing is i saw the gar when he first got to the store they put him in a tank with african cichlids and they compleatly messed him up badly within 3 days and thats when i said if i can just take him he was pretty bad i wish i had a pic to show a before and after
and hes not weak anymore ^_^

I say go for it, do it while their young so they can grow accustomed to living in the same space, they may even become comfortable with each other into adult hood.

No I am not mean... I'm telling you outright Veiltailed oscars are going to be a prey item. I do understand gar and I know them very well. Hobby strain altered fin fish (Cichlid or whatever) and gar do not mix. just as silvery ones do not. These animals are weak and will eventually be picked off.. Gars are predators they seek easy prey and nothing is more easy than a deformed fish that can not swim properly.
Look either listen or do not.. I do not really care. Think about it for a bit and you might just get it.....

i dont think the veil tails can move fast enough to evade the gar if it decides to eat them.

I kept Spotted Gar and Tiger Oscar together without any problem. I never seen them fight or picking on each other before. Gar is about a foot long and Oscar is about 5 inches. What I think is that Oscar won't bully or pick on fish that is twice their size. Well, I don't know, I think it depends on what kind of fish you are housing with Oscar I guess. If Gar and Oscar were the same size or Oscar is bigger, maybe Oscar will do some damage to the Gar or totally kill it, depends on how aggressive Oscar is. From my own experience, you can safely house them together but you gotta make sure that your Gar is at least twice bigger than your Oscar.

the gar will probably outgrow and eat the oscar.

You really just do not get it.... Yep have fun and please do not bother complaining when your deformed fish are shredded by this gar should you put them together. I have explained this very clearly and if you do not get it... well thats your fault..
New or not to this realm there are rules and you can not just wish the negative away because you wish or hope someone else will tell you what you want to hear rather than the truth... Really rejecting the existence of truth is not going to change the fact that a gar is going to own that deformed fish.
