From looking at the posts here it is apparent that RTC's and TSN's are among the favorites. Cool, yes but as many posts lists they (RTC's) can be a little daunting to handle at full size.
Thus what are the alternatives for those of us who want a large predatory cat????

I'll share mine....
The black bullhead. Jumbo here has grown from a wild caught 3/4" last summer to now over 9". There is absolutly NOTHING that he does not eat.
With a max size of under 20" he will be easily accomadated for years to come. Possibly an odd mix but his tankmates get along just fine with him.

I had a wild caught bullhead for a few years when I was a teenager, loved it, and another in college- But, by far my favorite cat to this date was my giraffe cat. Unfortunaltey lost it to a heater malfunction, but just beautiful and awesome cat-
second fave has got to be the ASIAN red tail cat- full size about two feet, extremely aggressive, and very very pretty.

I did have an Adonis pleco, 10", that was my all-time fave- maybe not a predator, but very carnivorous, and ate out of my hand.....

I second that bullhead make great aquaria fish...perhaps you even read my article about them. They aren't very flashy like the RTC but they have their own beauty to them and are very owner responsive. They truely will eat anything, just a cople nights ago mine ate one of my pumpkinseeds.

Here is my brown bullhead

Another of my favorites is this pim species I own, I have no idea what it is...not even the folks on planetcatfish could ID it for me but he is about 7" and 2 years old, he still seems to be growing.

The indestructible catfish, these are one of the mosta daptable fish ever, they can live in everything from flowing streams to sewage ponds and are even salt tolerant enough to go in a modrerately brackish tank.

Burbot, are often called eel pout in places.
Their latin name is lota lota, they are a freshwater member of the cod family. They are a cold water fish most often caught by anglers ice fishing. I have not kept them myself, by have seen them listed in others tanks. They grow quite large, I caught one through the ice back in 96 that was 42" and 16 pounds.
They are the reason I love Ornate bichers as the similarity is striking.

Burbot are actually in the cod family but they are also called eel pout.

EDIT: Burbot man beat me too it.

BTW, the Platynematichthys notatus is totally awsome.

You are correct. They spawn in late winter under the ice. Several males will swarm with the female in a large mass as you state.
If a person finds the spawning grounds it is amazing how many you can see in a good day of ice fishing, even though they are most active at night.

Nice to see a few nods to the Bullhead!!!!

The comment I made at the start of the thread, is that they are a nice alternative for those of us with under 200 gallon tanks who don't want their cat to outgrow the tank, but still have a monster. A bullhead at 14 inches in an aquarium is a real monster
