Ok so heres the deal, this is my first post on this site, and from what ive seen its pretty awesome. I have a 55 gallon tank and just lost my 5 red belly pirahnas. it was very sad. but now i want to do something different. I am a huge bowfisherman, so i love gar and dogfish (bowfin). I know my tank isnt huge but it will be someday. this is the tank that migrates back and forth from college with me haha. oneday ill have a biggin'. but i went down to the LFS? i think i used that right, local fish store im guessing, im new. and they said that i cant get gar this time of year and they had no idea what a bowfin even was, im in the freakin upper penninsula of michigan right now. i was thinkin of getting maybe 2 spotted gar and a little dogfish. but have no idea what they cost or where to get them. can anyone help me out. i wouldnt mind a little catfish maybe either. would they get along? i'd like to do north american native fish. any help would be greatly appreciated. this is a very low budget project, like i said im a broke @$$ college student. thanks a lot guys.

Heres my best piece of advice for you or anyone in a similar situation save your money, graduate. Then once you get a permanent residence get a tank big enough then get your dream fish (gars, bowfin and whatever).Your current tank could only hope to hold those fish for at best a year-Anne

Any gar species would outgrow that tank in 4-8 months depending on diet and tank conditions. I would follow beblondies advice and just wait until you have the big tank.

Ok I'm new here but for getting a Gar I just went to a Pet Store that was 50 miles North of town and they had huge Florida Gar for $40 or little tiny Florida Gar for $19.. I bought the tiny one he eats almost 20 Minnows every 2 days. So if you want one just call Fish Stores that are somewhere around you but take into consideration the cost of housing one. I spend almost $10 a week so far to feed the little guy!
