has anyone ever attempted to keep a Wallago Attu? Or maybe a Hunter cat?

I have kept Wallago attu before in the past... very interesting catfish. I raised mine from 2.5" to about 14", they have an extremely fast growth rate. Although it lays still most of the time, it is a v ery strong fish that can attack or move surprisngly fast... w/ bursting speed! I plan on keeping another one sometime in the near future.

Just how big do they really get? About as big Pangasionodon gigas? That would be awesome to have something that big in home aquarium.

Pangasius gigas reaches 10' in length (300cm) while Wallago attu 8' in length (240cm). Not an entirely big difference; especially when you are discussing the attempt at housing one in an aquarium. They are both huge fish that won't last long in your average tank.

Well, don't forget that there are quite a few different fish imported under the generic 'Wallago' label that are commonly imported. Ompok spp. cats are frequently confused for Wallagos, and they stay considerably smaller. Plus, there's more than one specie of Wallago, and not all are giants like the attu. Trying to get a good ID on those cats is very difficult, too, because so little research has been done on that complex.

I had 5 of these, down to 4 now, as for growing fast? I got mine at 2 inch and the two biggest are now 5 inch and its been a year, the other two are still sitting at two inch in size, the one that I lost, ended up as food for a Tiger Shovelnose. He was about 4-5 inch.

As for just laying around? mine are all over the place, you need to have them in a nice setting, they love plants or driftwood to sit under. And at night, go and watch them , they are tank terrors, it is amazing how fast they are.

I got them from my local fish store under another name, as no one knew what they were. So I picked all 5 up for $20. :)

Ohya both pairs are kept in two 180 gallon tanks.

I had two for a few months, wasn't sure what they were, just thougth they were really cool. First, the slightly larger one ate the 2nd one, then ate my clown loaches, then started on the rest of the tank. For each fish it ate I think it grew 2 inches ( maybe and exaggeration, but it seemed like it at the time) In desperation I put it into a tank with larger cichlids, that would not fit in it's mouth, and they ate it over night.

SO, yes, I would love to try again! they seem to be hard to find on a regular basis. They grow very fast, are very active, are very aggressive, and at the same time are quite delicate- kind of like an arrowana in some ways.
