Glad he settled into the sand. Mine took a bit to find a comfortable spot too. It may mess with him, since he would try to kill his reflection. Keep an eye on that. Is the tank cycled? Now the job of getting him on dead foods...

RedDevilDon2005
09-20-2008, 11:55 PM
tanks been up for over a year. i made some caves the other night, thats where he decided to chill, buried in the sand, lol. im gonna try some shrimp tomorrow

RedDevilDon2005
09-21-2008, 10:35 PM
or is it even possible?

kif
09-21-2008, 11:10 PM
you got that at aquatics and exotics? I asked them about congo puffers less than two months ago, and i had to pull one of their books of the shelf to show them what it was. Did you see any more? Price? UNbelievable i am so upset.

Pufferpunk
09-22-2008, 12:04 AM
Never gonna happen. You have a brown variant. I use red gravel mixed in with the black sand to keep my red variant, bright red. Otherwise it will get very dark, to match the substrate.

dragonfish
09-22-2008, 10:54 AM
That is very nice. Freshwater puffers are something I've never tried before, may have to look in to it.

you might think of providing a few hiding spots. of course, i cant tell what your entire tank looks like.

RedDevilDon2005
09-22-2008, 5:55 PM
this is what they do man, lol, theyre lurkers

Pufferpunk
09-22-2008, 5:56 PM
It is totally natural for them to remain buried most of the time. They are ambush predators who bury themselves up to their eyeballs & wait to pounce up under their prey but gutting them from underneath.

radioaktiv
09-22-2008, 5:59 PM
yeah, i havent had any personal experience with a congo puffer

ive just read that sometimes burrowing can be from being spooked and having nowhere else to hide

RedDevilDon2005
09-22-2008, 6:00 PM
hes got a cave, but he like to be in the open buried. i love it.

Pufferpunk
09-22-2008, 6:47 PM
Nope, that pic on page 2 isn't of Punky. She eats earthworms, people shrimp, fiddler crabs, clams, mussels, small crays. I've also fed her some failing fish I couldn't kill.

RedDevilDon2005
09-22-2008, 6:49 PM
how big is she? and how big are the crabs? lol

Pufferpunk
09-22-2008, 6:51 PM
She's about 4" now (I got her as a tiny 1" baby). They are just regular FW fiddler crabs you get at the LFS--they keep crawling out of the tank.

RedDevilDon2005
09-22-2008, 6:52 PM
do you have any videos of yours burying?

Interesting....and pretty cool.

Aquatics and Exotics. If you guys are ever in the cincy area check them out. they have a 3600gal shark tank in the store with 2 florida black fins. also have killer exotic fish

Love that store, but they never want to cut me a deal. I helped move a 2200 gallon tank out of that store. It's now been replaced by a giant black curtain in the back. lol

Do they still haven't that giant peacock bass?

RedDevilDon2005
09-25-2008, 11:15 PM
yes they do, and they have a like 3700 gal shark tank. i thnk they want like 200 bucks for that pbass too. their prices are a tad steep, but they have a few oddballs there.

09-29-2008, 10:18 AM
nice congo. i love how my marbled goby buries itself in the sand, too.

if you still want red sand, 3M ColorQuartz makes s-grade in a red color. I have it in my 210 and love it.

RedDevilDon2005

I get mine this tuesday !!!!!
I have the tnk soo ready.
its got about 10 ghost shrimp
5 dwarf african frogs.
a lotus with leaves the size of dinner plates :)
2 other dwarf lotuses
ludwiga in the back and some wisteria..
java moss and anubias on driftwood
and two amazon swords in the back corners..
the front is fine sand the back is course sand covered in river pebbles to protect the plants :)
oh.. and java fern.
its BY far the most welcoming place to a puffer I'd reckon

Pufferpunk
10-18-2008, 12:20 AM

RedDevilDon2005

haysanatar
10-18-2008, 9:04 PM
they're not supposed to last too long :)
but they look cool until they taste good
they have plenty of hiding places I bet it takes at least 2 days for them to all get et up

I'm looking forward to an orange one..
but you know i think I'll be happy with any color.. but just EXTRA happy for a orange one.
not sure if I'll name it.. though ha

ha

I'm aware your puffer is called punkster..
I'm not a big fan of naming things other than cats and dogs..
cars boats etc... I don't name.. I have.. 5 frogs 6 ghost shrimp (those are here till my puffer is ... and till he/ she gets hungry.)
I ave about 25 other fish..none of them have name and I don't desire to give them any... ha
but lets face it puffers are a bigger deal... and might deserve one.
I kind of hope my puffer bites off my finger :)

well the underbelly is pumpkin orange.
and the rest of it.. is a darker more brown right now. with a few almost black markings and near the underbelly I swear there are a few orange circle outlines.
I put mine in the tank.. first thing it did was head to teh bottom it swam to the pebbled area left and went to the sandy and immediately burried.
I've just been watching to see if a fish frog or shrimp will wander by and disappear :)
haven't really seen much of him ha

haysanatar
10-21-2008, 10:12 AM

haysanatar

it sure did!
