Would it be possible to put two or more South American Lungfish in a 5x2x2,for life with other fish that are to big to fit in there mouths? :D

Nope, two lungfish together is almost impossible, they are very aggressive towards it own kind and will probably kill each other, but you can put different fish as tankmate with them, those fast swimming ones like tinfoil or aros or sharks..

Ditto dtgshark's comments. Even breeding pairs can't tolerate each other. SALs will fight up to the spawn, call a truce for the actual spawn, then recommence battling as soon as the eggs have been deposited.

While Oddball and Shark may well be right, and it is certainly true of the African lungfish, my understanding was that SALs and AULs can be kept together, and I know there are people on this and other boards that do keep them together. I don't have a SAL, let alone two in a tank together, so I am just reporting what I have read.

When young like many other species SAl's wil tolerate each other its as they mature they become territorial as fights happen. To the best of my knowledge only Aus lungfish tolrate each other in the wild and will loosely group together.-Anne

Hmmm, I did not know that. I only had one A. Lungfish though, but it never had a conflict with anything in my tank, including the crawfish...so I thought them to be peaceful all around. I learned something new today... :clap

I have seen some public aquarium here in Brazil with more than one SAL in the tank, but the tanks are big!! In a friend's tank he has 2 with 15in and doesn't have problems!!

unless one has a really big tank, it is not advisable to house 2 lungs in one tank... their aggression towards one another is scary... given tat they pack a powerful jaw...

on keeping with other big fishes, chances are e big fellas will try to nip those "feelers" of e lungfish... so not advisable too so best is to keep a lungfish by itself...

SALS get to 4' in the wild, so I think your tank is too small for even one (you said "for life").

I dont think it is a good idea but someone kept 3 SALs together in a 125g when they were around 20''. Then he moved them all to a bigger tank.

I've got 3 SALs together in a 120 gal tank. 28", 24" and 23". They have never fought up to this point and commonly lay together or on top of one another. They're probably not mature yet, but they are about the most peaceful fish I know of up to this point.
