Why does everyone say to not feed piranhas goldfish?

cuz they're raised in unhealthy conditions (copper-loaded water, to prevent mass disease outbreaks), prone to carrying diseases ANYWAY, they're very deficient in thiaminase (some nutrient allegedly important in fish growth), and being a coldwater specie, they're simply not something our tropical giants would consume in the wild. I view them as swimming corpses.
Experience tells me I can stick 20 goldfish in a well-cycled 10g, and 15-18 of them will drop dead for no reason after a week. No ammonia, no nitrites, 90% water change just prior to adding them.
And I'm feeding these nasty things to my preciouses? oh hell no, I'll keep my guys on pellets, ghost shrimp and whatever expensive schooling fish treat I decide to provide them with on occasion.

when i had a roommate he had his 55 gallon tank at the house... we had 6 rbp's (6 were too many so i gave 3 to the LFS, which sold for $80 each :wall: ) and an oscar in the same tank (oscar owned the tank)...and fed them goldfish for over a year. one day we go to the LFS and buy some goldfish and come home and feed them. i wake up the next morning to find all four laying on the bottom.....DEAD
SO DO NOT FEED GOLDFISH TO ANYTHING!!! :nono:

Your best bet would be to switch them over to pellets and frozen foods. Either that or make friends with someone who breeds fancy guppies or convicts.

Because most of the feeder's(goldfish) are kept in really poor conditions i'm sure one of your reply's said they are kept in copper loaded water's well he's right about that . I had an out break in snails and could not use the snail killer formula because of the very same reason it's high in copper which is not good for piranhas. if you want to feed them live fish may i suggest danio's or scissor tails. Lance fish is a favorate of mine frozen or live.
goldfish are garbage... feed them frozen fish , i'm currently feeding my small reds nothing but Tilapia fillets and sometimes shrimp.
It's always fun to take a seine or cast net out and catch your own food. Wild fish can carry nasties, but not nearly as bad as GFs usually. I know people that only take feeders from local rivers and have never had problems. Just know your local laws and you should be ok.

Now this is something new to my ears. Thanks for that info piranha.
What are ghost shrimp?
Ghost shrimp are burrowing, soft shelled, white/pink shrimp up to 5" long, that are sold as bait or dug from tidal sand flats.

i feed my piranha shrimp and brine shrimp with occasonal guppies
They're also called glass shrimp, if you've heard of those.
I did not no that glass shrimp are also called ghostshrimp, the ones I'm used to are sold in Pacific coast bait shops and some places are called sand shrimp. I dug them for extra money as a kid. I like wild caught feeders like white suckers, etc, and have never had a problem. Just get them from clean, healthy creeks.

Here in Holland most people feed goldfish to their predatory fish probaly because there cheap, nobody seems to know that goldfish arent that for them. The rbp i kept in the past were fed with live catfish, fish filet, mealie worms, crickets, shrimps and tetra,s guppy,s and other small fish.

most people in america feed their predatory fish goldfish too, unfortunately :(
For those people who live near a coastline you can buy live smelt, anchovy, herring, etc, from bait shops for feeders. Rinse em off and drop in a couple at a time, they won't live long but since they are salt water most of thier nasties don't transfer.

i currently have meal worms, frozen brine shrimp, and frozen blood worms. I forgot what I paid for those, but are there any cheaper foods? I dont plan to feed it live expensive fish everyday, just as a treat. Yea, any cheaper foods easy on the wallet?

What I do is keep a feeder tank in which I quarantine my feeders before feeding them to my rohms. Typically I keep them for a week in which two things occur, 1-They get bigger, fuller and more vitamin enriched by feeding them a decent flake food. 2-Any possible disieses that they may have carried are typically eliminated by being in a healthier enviroment (Good filtration, No overcrowding, and a little salt).
So all in all feed 'em, but be carefull.
