So I have a 29 gallon tank with 1 goldfish in it and some plastic plants. It is pretty boring. I am thinking of moving the goldfish and turning it into a live plant tank.

I have small gravel in there now - but I kind of wanted to put some sand in as a substrate. I wanted to mix the sand with the gravel. The lighting is nothing special so I know that I will need low light plants. So, what advice can you guys offer me?

ummm well first off, make sure your not getting into something thats a lil tricky for new begginers, your gunna need a carbon diffuser, plant food, and its just all about what kinda plants you want and the abundence.... from what i know, afterall im no expert

the setup you have right now will work just fine for low light plants. use anubias, mosses and ferns and tie them to rocks or driftwood. these dont go buried in the substrate so youre gravel is fine...

read the stickies that will give you an idea or the basics on lighting and the basic needs of a planted tank. and just FYI if you mix sand and gravel sooner or later the sand will settle to the bottom and the gravel will end up on the top. so its easier to go with one or the other but thats just me.

I honestly don't know what kind of lighting it is, I know that it is nothing special. I have a 2 flourecsent bulb fixture that are built into the aquarium. This is the tank http://www.tricker.com/prod-p-eclipse29combo

you will want to swap your bulbs for some plant bulbs, look for a colour spectrum of 6000 to 10000 and seach low light plants on the net

Anubias would be good. Low light, no need for fertilizer or anything. You probably wouldnt even need to get new lights. Plus your goldfish shouldnt eat them. Goldfish like to eat plants.

Get some flourite as substrate, It was recommended to myself a while back and is one the best pointers I've ever had for plants.

At the time it was a planted discus tank, now it houses oscars and I stopped adding plant fertz months ago and still the plants grow like crazy
