Better do some quick heavy researching. These fish are filter feeders and are very had to raise. There have been quite a few experienced aquarist here on MFK that have fail attempts at trying to raise these fish.

How much did you pay for 1-2 inch african arowana/black arowana? And what does it mean by filter feeding? Small size food?

an african is not a black. two different species.

i honestly dont see why its so hard to take care of african aros.
i basically treat mine like any other fish.
just have to feed much smaller foods and at least twice a day.
although right now,im only feeding like once a day and its still fine.
he'll try to eat anything, even things that are way to big to swallow.
feed crushed up pellets, bloodworms, tubifex and black worms.
also very small pieces of shrimp.
as for water params, theyre pretty hardy.

i think the main problem with african aros being so hard to keep when young is because of the wild caught aspect. I had one for a few weeks eating well, great color, active, one day it just up and died. water levels were great. some kind of bacteria or something it had from the wild must have gotten to it.

yeah where is this african aro breeder. i'd love a tank raised one. if they can't exactly figure out silvers i doubt there are african breeders out there. also where i got mine, there were 3 and the other two also mysteriously died around the same time.

I grew my african aro out from a baby, i started with live black worms and then it eventually learned to eat pellets and freeze dried shrimp.

Just watch, because I tried raising them together and they will fight, the one in the pics is one of 4 that made it. If I had separated them when they were young they all would still be hear today. I think house them in a large tank and maybe your success will be greater when raising them together. The one in the pics is rounding 10". A little busted up because when it was younger I had a leichardi and they not always got along, since them he's had some scars. Good luck and enjoy!

I'm putting all 5 in 220gal tank by themselves, was looking to add a 6" black aro as well, what do you think

vanimate

A 220 will last for a little bit, but these guys get big and swim alot. They get jumpy when they feel cramped and they will also fight among themselves. Good luck ;)

Yeah they swim alot, the black should be ok but those are jumpy as well and the africans may be too active for them. Especially if there is more then one.

A quote from the Encyclopedia of Animals: Reptiles, Amphibians, and Fishes:

"The living species most closely related to the pirarucu (Arapaima) is Heterotis Niloticus. Like the pirarucu, H. Niloticus is a nest builder, clearing a site among aquatic plants, and later guarding its offspring. Unlike the predatory pirarucu, however, H. Niloticus feeds on small planktonic organisms and on organic matter in the bottom debris. Food is collected and mixed with mucus as it passes through the mouth and into a complex spiral-shaped organ lying above the gills on each side of the head. From there, the mixture is moved into the pharynx, and then swallowed. Earlier ideas that the spiral organs were accessory air-breathing devices are now discounted. The swim bladder, however, is lung-like and serves that function, thus allowing the species to occupy swamps and relatively deoxygenated water of a river's reeded shores, both regions being its preferred habitat.

H. Niloticus rarely exceeds a length of 80 centimeters (32 inches). The species is of some economic importance in West Africa, where it is also cultivated in ponds."

If this is any indication of something, yes, there may be breeders.

As for the question on Silvers, there are a good amount of them. Possibly more than the Asians. Heck, there are Silver and Jardini breeders in Luzon. (Thank you, King-El, for this info.)
