Here's the thing I have a 4" Clown Knife and would like a mate for it. However where I live the LFS really suck!! Texas!!
So I have to go online--does anyone know of any sites?
These are the fish I have in mind (I only want one of the below listed)
TSN Cat
Red Tail Cat
Gar--???
Arowana (I have never had success raising one)
Dorado
Wolf fish
any other ideas would help

i'm not sure i asked the same thing in the store the other day i was thinking of adding one to my cat tank the problem i cam across was the food they like and the fact they are slo eaters i would chose something that prefers different eat habits .
so i'm just as curious as you because this is a fish i would like to keep in one of my tanks also but i hate watching slo guys go hungry.

I know that does pose a problem? So can you recommend anything? Ornate Bichir maybe?
Plus I figure since the Clown is the first fish he may adapt and be able to compete for food??

Night feeding would be the best for them. I have my Clown with a RTC x TSN Hybrid (amoung other fish) and they do fine together. So if anything, I'd say the TSN would be a good choice

the cats will outgrow the knife, the dorado (for sure) and possibly the wolf may be too aggressive, so i would go with a gar (other than alligator) or an arrow (other than a jar).

they are slow eaters until they reach about a foot. then they actually have no problem coming out in the day for day feeder or whatever. when they are under 6-8" keep them in dimmer light or have floating plants as ive noticed medium to bright lights puts them under stress. make sure you don't have any takemates that eat and eat until they pretty much throw up (oscar), as they will steal all the clowns food which is critical until they get at least 10". hope this helps as this is exactly what i experienced with my clown.

my clown knife outcompetes both my tsn and my gar for food - the key is to get them to except all sorts of food, live, frozen even pellets
i would stay away from the dorado - i had one in w/ my clown knife and gar and he was a non-stop terror and he was smaller then both of them - the dorado constantly attacked the knife and chewed up his tail and eventually put a large open wound on my gar - awesome fish but not something you want to keep with tankmates

I currently have mine with 2 puffers, I think they've all learned to get along cuz I saw the clown chase a puffer around last week... I think they've been neutral since!

jokin i got them to sell to people but then realized most people that want to buy them are going to keep them in small tanks like 55s so i just am keeping them now so they dont go to bad homes
and by the way i have a ton of room for them so why not have that many silvers (i only have 9 left now because i did sell quite a few to some good homes)

TSN or Aro would make the ideal tankmate for your knife.

It is nice to go on a site where people know what they are talking about!
Thanks a ton guys!:)
What about Cichlids--big aggressive cichlids--I figure if the knife is larger they will respect its mouth and they could possibly coexist--The thing is I tried an TSN and I notice the TSN tail was chewed up--So I thought that I must have fin rot or something--hiowever, one night I dimmed the lights and noticed that the CK was constantly harrassing my TSN-it got to the point where the TSN had no tail and when I would walk by the tank my TSN would freak out and ram into the glass--needless to say I gave the TSN to my training partner. Then I tried an Albino Oscar and the same thing--my freakin CK is crazy-so I was thinking of Jag or Trimac something that can stand its ground! Let me know what you guys think--is it possible--cause I really like the CK but I do not want to have one fish in my 1000 gallon pond!:irked:

I'd like to hear about how they get along as well. I am thinking of housing mine with angels and discus.

The question of wether they get along or not is relaitve to the fish and environment. Once the harmony is there, try not to change them at all.
I always like to get fish when they're little, so when they fight for terrotry, there will be less damage when they're small versus when they're huge.
So far in my tank I have:
10" Gold CK
11" Black CK
12" Royal CK
10" Black Ghost Knife
14" Tigrinus
10" TSN
3" Blood Parrott , 3 of them
12" Silver Arowana
8" Green phantom Pleco
8" Stripped Raphael
8" Delhezi Bichir
7" Green Severum
Everyone other than the two CK gets with eacj other sometime, but they usually calm down after a week or so....They were fighting for a week, and then suddenly they get along normally like htey have been for the past year.

Everyone keeps referring to a TSN.......what is that? My friend is looking for a tankmate for his Clown Knife and is totally against an arowana (why, I don't know). What about a Pink Tailed Chalceus or "watermelon fish"? Please, give me ANY suggestions besides an arowana??

i wouldn't put a trimac in with a clown knife as it will eventually kill the knife!my royal clown gets on with my oscars ok but there is a healthy respect there so they mainly keep out of each others way.He also hand feeds and i've only had him about 6 weeks! KHS a tsn is a tiger shovelnose cat one huge mother!!!

mine is not a slow eater when the lights are on.. it is gone in a flash.. but because they have bad eyesight a ck with tank mates and alot going on in the tank may not be able to locate the food as fast.. mine knows where it will be and theres no one else in the tank with him and i have no other fish besides the pacu that eat as fast as my CK:D

Angels and Discus are a bad choice to go with a CK. He will harass them to death when the lights go out.
Also a 30 gallon will be outgrown by a CK almost instantly- they grow FAST.
My CK gets along fine with my CA Cichlids- an armed truce.:)
He bites my Birchirs if they go in his cave but not seriously-he cant hurt them.

I saw it mentioned that african cichlids are fine with CK's.. do all of you think this would be okay as long as the cichlids were good size.. my ck is 9 inches.

Just everything that's in my sig, they all get along great, the largest clown knife runs the show and keeps everyone else in check. I've also had success in the past with pike cichlids.
