That's horrible.
You know, I always wonder if people buy fish like that because they believe that old myth that all fish "only grow as large as the tank". Any experienced fishkeeper will tell you this isn't true, but I admit it's a myth I stupidly believed til I started educating myself in my early teens. I live in a college town and have to cringe every August when I go to the pet store and see girls with a fish bowl in one hand, picking out the prettiest fish in the store to buy. (And I'm a girl, I'm not being sexist).

i cant tell you how many times a day i have to refuse a sale to someone who wants to put something like,, oh i dont know, what happened today.. ah,, a bala shark.. in a half gallon fish bowl. and then tell me, well i got a goldfish at the fair 3 years ago and the goldfish lived in a bowl for 6 months before it died... and it was fine...yeaaaa.... 6 months is a hellova lifespan...arghghghghghghgh on the upside, she seems to be adjusting well..i'll get pics of her in a minute at feeding time.

i hate when people that work at petco pretend they are experts on fish, the resident fish expert at petco was explaining to some kid how puffers inflate themselves by drawing water into their "lungs"

:screwy: One of these days i'm going to one of these places, and ask a bunch of questions just to hear that kind of thing. that's hilarious.

People like this I wanna body slam for being stupid and inconsiderate. It happens alot, idiots get a fish they think is cool and have no means to care for it, or simply dont know anything about the fish and get it anyway. Not much you can do unless there was a law in place of some kind. But that wont probably happen.

You would be better off with a 6' tank with those guys. Either way, it's not a waste, but actually a necessity. Devil looks good, especially with the circumstances.

the 150 i want i think IS 6 feet, i could be wrong, but its a reallly really long tank.. i'll have to double check it at work tomorrow.. its long, wide and relatively shallow..
pdbrady
10-15-2008, 8:36 PM
Oh, ok. Yeah you'd know if it wasn't, because most 150's are 5x2, and pretty tall. So if it's shallow, you should be good.

10-15-2008, 8:38 PM
put it this way.. it looks big enough to let my 3 year old swim in it comfortably...lol i like the longer wider tanks better than the taller ones anyway, it gives the fish more floor space..

I do think that that person is an idiot, BUT... She did try to bring to the petstore before leaving it outside, and as people who know better, you guys at the fish store should have just taken the fish, if for nothing more than just to euthenize it. I'm glad to hear it's being taken care of now though.

While it is true that the company has a strict policy about not taking fish, unless your manager has rules against it take them yourself. That is where half of my fish came from. My people have my cell and will call me at home to see if I'm interested in something or to help someone out. That being said, good save and those people should be put in a boiling pot for awhile just to see how it feels.

That's pretty messed up. Lucky for him you were walking by. My first betta was named "Lucky". I found him in an apartment I was moving into. The girl that lived there before me just left him sitting on top of the fridge in his dirty bowl to die. I was kind of pissed, she seemed like an alright person. She came by like a week after I moved in asking for it back, I just told her it died, she didn't deserve it back!

you know i think the stores deserve a lot of the blame in not asking questions on what size tank it was or not careing just to make a buck i know its a business but the stores should have accurate sings with detailed info on the fish such as size and tank requirements and not sale to those who can not take care of the fish

i agree, i refused a sale at the register the other day to someone who was buying 17 fish at once, for a 50 gallon tank, yes they were appropriate sized fish, but adding that many at once to an un established tank will just cause an ammonia spike and everyone will die.... i'v refused plenty of sales in my day, the problem is the walmart next door sells fish, so 9 time sout of 10 they just go there and buy the fish we refuse to sell them..

Even if you work at petsmart or petco its not a big deal. I would rather have knowledgeable people working with the fish (not to mention people who care) than people who don't have a clue (which is much more frequent).
