Nice looking Pacu, but not a Black.

Considering red belly larger than him is still red, and the lower portion of his body is jet black I would say this is a black ;)

What makes you think other wise? Not to mention a well known exotic fish importer declared him as a black.

At 12 inches hes in a 55g holding aquarium. He has a enough space to easily make turns in the aquarium and its about 4 times his length. Very small still obviously. We are constructing and indoor pond for him and some friends :)

Because this is what a Black Pacu looks like. Notice the much larger head and the colors. The lower half is black while the upper is light brown to golden.

As far as an exotic fish importer declaring anything, anything to make a buck. ;)

Here are some more pictures of true Black Pacus. There is somewhat misleading info on the net, but rest assured these are the real deal.

He looks exactly the same as those, the orange color is juvenile state as hes under one year of age. Notice the black lower coloration on this guy as well ;)

RB Pacus this size would still be in full red coloration usually up until about 15 inches or so. This guy was black since 8 inches.

Nope, I've seen many a dark RB at much smaller sizes than 15". That has to do with diet and genetics. They are also shaped differently. RB (yours) are round when looked at from a side view. Blacks are more elongated, quite easily distinguishable at all stages of development through maturity.

Oh well, if after all this info you still want to believe its a Black, so be it. I showed you the differences. Have a nice day...

Yes, quite commonly. Check out this one, definately a RB Pacu. Notice no greenish tan to gold upper half, round appearance rather than elongated body shape?

So what would it take for him to be a black then? What is he missing?

M|L
03-02-2006, 3:15 PM
umm, this IS settled right?

he's a red pacu and there's no ands, ifs, buts about it.

what's he missing? the genes.

Poor landon, he is really really desperate for this pacu to be a black.

Now on behalf of being nice, I think we should all retract our assessments and say without a shadow of a doubt, it's a black pacu.

It's a sure-fire thing landon - that is a black pacu ;)

Come on man, you're being ridiculous. People have been telling you exactly why yours is not a black and what differentiates a RB from a black and you've been replying with "so why isn't mine a black?" repeatedly.

I have two Red belly Pacu and one of them has that dark/black lower and silver top, and he's 10 inches.

I don't find that particularly attractive in a fish, now my larger pacu, Bitey he's almost a show fish, uniform silver body with deep red belly, dark black edge of tail.

i think its odd that he doesnt have the red belly at his size, but hes def. shaped like a red belly.

Whatever it is it is definately not a black.
I owned two blacks 15 or so years ago and from being an inch or two long they look completely different ,pointy head and slightly upturned mouth.
I picked mine out of a group of small imported reds though the shop tried to tell me it was just a sex difference ! I insisted on them or non.
I think they cost me about £ 3.50 at the time cheap even then.
Incidently they were black even at two inches.

red or black doesn't matter.... Nice fish!

Kinda does matter. Blacks are much rarer, more expensive and grow much larger. Gotta know what you have in order to house it correctly.
