Guys.. this gallons thing is very not used over in asia.
All I can say is..
Before:
2 tier 3 x 1.5 x 1.5 feet tank.
After:
6 x 2.5 x 2.5 feet tank with 4 feet sump filtration.

Big leaps! .. can you tell us WHY???
piranha45
06-07-2005, 10:07 PM
because i like predatory fish communities, and predatory fish need big tanks. I also stand by the philosophy that bigger tanks are better tanks. I would have preferred a 240g, but there was not one for sale that I wouldn't have to pay double the reasonable price for, which was well beyond my limited budget at the time.
some day, be it 4 years or 24 years from now depending on which career i settle on, I will invest in a 1,000g+ tank

Simple explanation for my big leap...
Before:
Not married and staying with parents. :wall:

Married and staying on my own! :headbang2

I wanted to go all out when i was in college but then reality struck and i was dead broke at that time. I was happy with a 75G.

I know exactly what you mean. Back in high school I shared a room with my brother. So the largest tank I had room for was a 90. He went to college and we moved into larger place. But my parents still only let me get three. So I had a 90,125 and 120 gallon tanks in my room at one time! I stayed home and went to USF and when I finally moved into my own place I was like a kid in candy store. Knowing I could be a tank wherever I choose.
When I lived with my parents it was really unfair considering my dad was a big time hobbyist and had tanks throughout the house.

Its nice to make up for it when you have your own place. :)
Its very interesting to see how fast a person progresses in terms of tank size.

I have a 55 gal. tank. When transporting it from storage the side cracked (not smashed) If I seal it, would it truly hold water. I rent and don't need landlord(lives downstairs) bugging out because he is covered in 55 gal. of fish water.. :22_yikes:

Just shows you how addicting this hobby is.

Apart from a few smaller beginner tanks my first serious tankwas a 4ft 130L, thought that was big enough at the time but of course "NOT". I now have a 6ft 300L as that is about all the weight I think I should put on a timber verandah and it seems like minimum now. The bigger the tank (providing it is set up with sufficient filtration) the easier they seem to be to look after. I look back at the miriad of small fish I use to have in all these tanks and now they each house two Americam cichlids each!

I am in the middle of repairing a tank myself at the moment. The local glass guy here for the cheapest and easiest recomends cutting a piece the size of the panel and inserting it over the existing one with aquarium silicone and then re-siliconing around the edge. In QLD it against the law to sell 2nd hand glass, so he's only charging me $5 to cut it. Fortunately it is the base so no one will see it. It would be OK if it is on the back of the tank, I always paint the back of my tanks black anyway. Otherwise it a fairly major job I would imagine.

Cooya - agree. The bigger the tank ,the more stable the water . You could
mess up a bit and the results wouldnt be as disastrous as on smaller tank.
i was doing a water change yesterday .. left the hose running unchecked for a minute or 2 as i was multi tasking ( forgot what else i was doing !) . I came back
and the hose was hot... boiling water was coming out of it!! Luckily this was a 180
and i only had a 5 degree bump. But imagine if that was a 30 gallon or even a 75.

3.8 liter per gallon U.S.
I started with a ten gallon guppy tank and a claw foot bathtub for pumpkinseeds and bullheads, added a 5 gal for a mudpuppy when I was 10, since then tank sizes, (and numbers) have gone up and down. While in the service the biggest I could ussually get away with was a 20g and I gave them away when I got transferred. Biggest tank I have owned was a 150g.

I went from a 50g to another 50g , then to a 90g then to a 200g then to a 400g, then to a 1000g and from there another 1000g and from there to a 1850g these tanks are still running except for 1000g tanks. From that I am planning a 12,000+ plus tank with a 33ft by 6ft veiwing window so that I can do an amazon bio-tope. It should be ready to get under way in abouts two years, I am having problems with building permits, but they will be solved it just takes time.

None of my tanks would qualify as big compared to what many of you have. But... As a small child, I had a simple semi-transparent plastic container (a gallon perhaps) where I would put tiny fish I would gather from small brooks in my neck of the woods: Tiny fish with shiny silver, green, and red on them, and tiny suckermouth fish. They would die soon enough without any filtration.
In the States, I first got a 10-gallon, then a 55-gallon. Got a silver aro, but sold it back because I could not make it eat prepared foods; got a black aro which jumped out of the tank during the night and died; got a rope fish which also slithered out and died; got discouraged and gave the hobby up for 17 years. About 5 years ago, I got a 29; most of the fish I got then have done rather nicely; so, I decided to try the silver arowana again and got a 125 for it, but this aro also died after a week... Got some discus which grew nicely but drove me crazy and bored alternately.
Now, I got another aro, 2 weeks ago today, at Petco (saw another small aro there today at the bottom of the aquarium, clearly in pain, severely bent with all of its dorsal fin missing :shakehead)
... I hope this fourth time is the charm. :hitting:

never was into fish until i came home from college.... for some reason it just clicked and I'm addicted now!!! :grinyes: :grinyes: :grinyes:
so here's my story:
20--> 55--> 29--> 90 gallon -->????
started with an old crusty 20 gallon metal tank with two oscars that grew to about 5", figured that was waaaay to small for them and got a new 55 gallon to put the Oscars in. Well i got bored with them a week after when i saw these amazing colorful fish at the LFS --- African Cichlids. So worked out a deal and swapped my old Oscars for a few Africans. Also within that timeframe i ran across a great deal on a 29gallon tank, figured I'd use it some time... so the third member is added. About a month down the road I found out saltwater really isn't that hard, and I could do with the setup already in my house!!! :naughty: So back to the LFS with my bag of Africans and returned home with a bag of Ocean Salt!! So I got that running great with a few damsels and then quickly added some triggers and an a snowflake eel that i got for just $12!!! (the fish store was getting rid of saltwater and it was the last critter left... he was only about 6" then... Now he's about two and half feet!!) Ok, year or so later, the big fish store in town was having a yard sale and to my surprise there was a 90 gallon for only $40!! :woot: (the catch was a busted bottom) With no previous background in fixing tanks i thought, hey how hard could it be?? A hundred buck later and high off of Silcone fumes I have a 90 gallon for my fish to move into. And thats where I stand now.
...BUT there is a possiblity of a 225gallon on the horizon. Found in the classifieds for only 75 bucks!! :headbang2 and its a favorite of mine - a cracked bottom. Looks like it never ends...

Started with a 10. Then, went to a 60 followed shortly by a 125. Then a 240 follwed by a 400 that my dad and I built. Then, a failed home-built 500 (plywood defect- blew out before fish were placed in it). Next came a double-layered 900 that my dad and I built, also. Finally, a 2500gal pond, in the basement, with one side of glass (always had a slow leak). Then, I went in the Navy.
Now, my current largest is 650 but, I have an additional 13,000gals worth of tanks.

11-15-2005, 2:25 PM
I had 3 10 gallons. Then a 60 gallon that wasn't properly maintained (young and impulse buy) and eventually gone to waste, then a 30 gallon that was an old tank and started to leak (had to throw it out). I still had a bunch of 10's. I had an above ground pond (that got dismantelled due to racoons always getting to the fish). Then I received a 12 gallon uniquarium for free from the pet shop I was working at. Then I received a 20 gallon from my Aunt when my Uncle passed away (R.I.P). Then I saved and slowly bought a 75 gallon set up. So I have 3 tanks running at this time: a 75 gallon tank, the 20 gallon tank, and the 12 gallon uniquarium.
We got a 25,then a 90,then a 66,then another 66,then another 90,then two 60s,then a 200 and 175 together,then another 200 and 75 together,then a 475 and a 420 together,then another 200.The 25 has gone along with the two 60s and except one 90 they are all in our lounge.Yes over 10 ton in the living room.Why???It all started with a black moor!!!!!!!!!!!!

a few of years ago i started out with a 10 gallon tank, which didnt work out at all, so i got a 55, had several losses (i didnt know about cycling back then). its been a year now, and the only loss i had was a small bala shark a month ago.
HAD 10 GAL TWO A 29LONG ADDED 4-5 MORE 10'S AND A 30 WITH SOME SMALL BREEDER AND OCT'S LOST ALL OVER THE YEARS NOW STARTING AGAIN WITH A 10 AND A 29 HOPING TO GET 125-240 IN A YEAR OR TWO
Wow ! talk about reviving a post!! woot! :)
I started with a jar. It's not even a gallon. it's 4"x6"x4"..something like that. I kept chana striatas in it..two or three, but they were babies, like 4". They just sat there, I didn't even feed them. Actually, I dunno what happened to them, I think I remember letting them go after the rain flooded the streets. I could catch those blue pearl gouramis in the flooded streets. Then came to america and my cute neighbor broke up with her boyfriend and she gave me her old 10 gallon fish tank. Just got some tiger barbs, and angel fish. I know bad combo, fin nippers with another fish that was slow and lots of finnage. From there, went to 60 gallon, kept oscars, arowana, bichirs, went hiatus to raise a family, and only kept a 60 gallon with P's. Now I have 330, 240, two 125's, one 100, one 60, two 40's, two 10's, and a propagation tank that measures 6'x2'x6'. It's multi-tier with multi-chambers. It's great for keeping bullies, like a jail :)

All and all, in about a year, I went from a 10g impulse buy (which my wife now regrets :screwy: ), to a 30g and then another 10g to replace the first 10g that littery shattered one day (don't ask cause I don't know?). About a month ago I bought a 77g (which I transported accross town with a broken right hand...not easy let me tell you) under the conditions that my wife can choose when I can buy equipment and fish. So far it is all aquascaped, filtered and heated but I need a python  , so until then...no African cichlids.

I went from a 10 to a 90 and a 125 overnight. a family member who was downsizing to a smaller house was generous enough to give my wife and i a 90gal corner tank with cabinet and canopy [beautiful setup]. He also gave us a 125 rec. shape with cabinet, 4 fluval 404 filters, net, heaters, lights etc. with hardly any experience at all exept a goldfish in a 10 gal. for quite a few months now i have maintained both tanks fairly well [i think] . two months ago i bought a tiger oscar, he got ich and treating him and the 90 gal was a lot of work. after treating the ich and doing all that required i fell in love it. now my fish tanks are something i really enjoy taking care of. i want a 300gal now...

I started with a 55 gal from there 75 bow front to a 150 now I currently have the 150 and just purchase a 256 gal
I started with a 75g that my family bought from a moving neighbor. That was when I was around 9. A couple years later I moved to a new house and built a 2600g pond. After the pond I bought a 55g with several turtles. I then got around 6 10g tanks in order to raise fry and then got a 240g last year. I have had 3 other 55g tanks that I don't remember when I got them but I sold them all. My next tank is going to either be another pond around 1000g or maybe a 450-750g tank? My dream tank will probably be a 20,000g+ pond that will be in my house and I'll have a small row boat and island in the center where I can sleep at night and listen to arapima's jumping. I can't have any BIG new tanks right now since my parents don't want me to put anymore money into the hobby so I have to sell fish in order to get new ones and new tanks/equipment. Their reason for this is because we have the highest electric and water bill than anyone we know :D

Fish are as addicting as heroin.
My addiction started with a 10g when I was about 14. I never had anything larger than a 30g tank up until 2 years ago when I bought a 150. Now I'm 47 :WHOA: The reason I didn't go for a larger tank before I got old is because I spent most of my life living in small apartments in NYC and Boston MA. Now that I own a house, I can go crazy but plan on going for several smaller tanks instead of fewer big tanks. That way I can keep more types of fish. For me, the addiction is still fierce even without owning monsters. One reason why I exist on this site is to marvel at the keepers of huge fish that I'll likely never have. MFK is an addiction only second to keeping live fish and buying more tanks.

I started with bowl when I was young (about 8 I think). When I was about 12 or so I moved up to a 10 gallon. Later on when I first went to university and moved out into my first apartment I got a 33. Now that I'm in a house I bought a 120 to go with my 33. Currently I am keeping the 33 and the 120 up together. I no longer have the 10. When I move into my new house (this coming summer) I am thinking of getting a 3rd tank, something in the 200 - 400 range.

55 Gallon to 90 G tank owners :
What size tank did you have before switching to something bigger ?
Similar question to the bigger tank owners :
To those who have 100+ gallon tanks.. what size tank did you previously have before moving on to the "big one" ?
I went from 20g - 70g - 225g&140g pond!! Ill never look back!! :headbang2

Don't be scared just do it.... A big tank is more stable, sure its bigger which may frighten you at first. You can either keep more fish or bigger fish, just let your imagination run wild with a big tank. One good thing about a big tank is that the ph won't floor in a day or the ammonia wont spike to dangerously high levels in a day.Take the leap and sell something if you have to, maybe a kidney...... whatever you have to do to get a big tank you will be happy once you have it in you possession.

Funny thing about big tanks is that they are actually easier to take care of for beginners. In some ways smaller tanks are for experts who have a lot of free time on their hands, LOL.
Of course the main thing to worry about with big tanks are the big cost that come with them.

10 gal for sons turtle, 29 gal for some goldfish the wife brought home, got rid of them for firemouths. Then a 55 Mbuna, another 29 for fry, 75 for a planted loach tank, another 10 for snails and cherry shrimp, 125 for fronts and tangs(all under 3"), planning a DIY 1000+ in the basement... All in one year
Only thing is though the 1000+ may be a 2000+, deal with wife is it will be my last tank
We'll see.... :naughty:

Fish bowl here too. I wond a gold fish at the carnival by throwing a ping pong ball in the bowl when I was eleven. It only held about two cups of water. Two days later my Mom bought me a 1 gallon bowl. That damn fish lived for almost 4 years in that bowl. :)
I bought a 20L from a friend with an Oscar in it in my early 20's. I soon bought him a 55 as he looked cramped in the 20. I ran that 55 for over 10 years and just purchased a 300 last month.

That is another fast jump ... How does it feel making that big of a jump in terms of maintenance and just basic husbandry of bigger fish ? That big of a jump would have definitely shocked me as my tank size upgrades were all gradual ( not counting my big pond).

I went from a 55 to a 125. I did that becasue I have 5 Red Belly's that needed a bigger home. I now have 2 breeding pairs of convicts in the 55 and Red Belly's in the 125. If you can afford/have room for a large tank, do it, it's well worth it.
