my lap has developed these huge cupped fins like a scoop.I have noticed a good deal of head shaking,twitching and other funny actions between the laps.They are around 15 inches.Has anyone else owned a poly with these huge cupped fins?

I forget which one is which....but I believe it's a way to sex them. The cupped fin means female...I think?

hmmm,i thought maybe male,lol.

i have 5 and only one has these huge cupped fins.

the males do this, not the females... they use the cup to catch and fertilize the eggs...

but is he like this for long periods of time?
some of mine have done this from time to time, but just for a short period of time, the females werent interested :)

He has been doing this for the past few weeks and one of the females is super fat and she has been"flirting" with him.

Yes, the cupping of the anal fin is most definately a MALE trait! It's the same basic thing as an erection! Your boy is letting his tankmates know he is sexually ready and he's displaying to see if there's any interest! Your fat female sounds as if she could be swollen with eggs and appears to be responding with the first steps of the mating dance! Keep a close watch on their activities and you may be blessed with a scattering of eggs! Additionally keep a eye on whether your boy always cups to the same side ( a lefty or a righty). Just something I've been studying for some time! Good luck, and keep us updated! :D

Separate the fat female and this male into a 90g or similar tank. Sounds like you have a pair!!

My 9" Ropefish used to cup his fin and shake a lot and kind of wrap around the 9" female when she was still alive. Ever since she died he has been more withdrawn and I haven't seen him act like that since to my other female Rope. Maybe I would have even got some babies if she didn't decide to starve herself to death... :(

Yup, a lot of my larger males would "flex" their stuff... often times they would flex and loosen flex and loosen and then it would pulsate LOL.. A friend of mine has a huge female endi and she regularily releases hundreds of eggs into his tank, but they all rot as there is no male ready to fertilize

the pair is still sticking together.the female is almost twice the size and thickness.I have been increasing water changes to 4x 25 percent weekly and i am keeping fingers crossed.

seperate the pair and be prepared for lots of eggs!
i hear raising the babies is hard.

I guess the situation is like this:
The male started flirting with the female, luckely for you she could have accepted him, he start cupping his anal fin as the female is ready to spawn. You could be able go get some fry if you separate them to a 90-110g.
How big is the male and female?
