Piranhas Love Them ? :hearts: Or Hate Them ? :angryfire And Why?

I like them. I plan on setting up a tank for Serrasalmus geryi (violet-line piranha) later on down the road. Although they're not "true" piranhas they're probably my favorites.

I like em.
Singles are quirky and odd.

Groups are interesting, given the right circumstances.

I like them; I find them physically beautiful, and I enjoy their vastly-overrated carnivorous tendencies.

love them. started with pygos but had more interest in solitary serra species. here is my pride and joy 7" diamond high back rhom. a lot of piranha behavior is overrated but this guy will chase me when i walk beside his tank and bites the magnetic algae scraper just like a central american cichlid.

Boring. I would keep monster ones like 9 inch plus payaras
or a 11 inch and bigger Rhom.

its all luck with them, ive had a boring skittish elongatus and really active outgoing rhoms and spilos. my irritan was the worst as far as behavior goes.

Theyre interesting but they get skittish as hell. I hate it when you turn the lights
on at a room, or walk past a p tank and hear ps bumping all of the place

i hate them. i use to think they were cool until i owned one. they are scared of everything. nothing like people make them out to be.

I use to love them. Then I owned six red bellies and one black. They were cool to watch when they ate, but other than that all they did was hide and freak out anytime you got close to the tank.

They're cool enough, big tetras with big teeth. You don't see them too often down here (never in stores), so it's always a treat when you do.I wouldn't mind having a few, but it's not worth my job and the hefty fine I'd be risking. I wish we had a personal licensing system for keeping certain fish down here (a system that was idiot-proof, somehow), but it's not a perfect world yet. I'd really rather have a pond with plexiglass sides and African tiger fish in it, but I'm just dreamin.

they can be fun to have around just because they are so over rated.

I love them but they can be frustrating if you get constantly lethargic ones. I prefer Pygo's to serras.

If u only have a few piranhas they would not be very funny to watch. But if u really can handle them right and provide them with hiding areas etc. they would not be so shy. Theres too many people who´s buying only 1 and expect it to eat up a whole rat or something by itself.

HATE THEM!
1) I work in a public aquarium, everyone wants to see them eat, its not all that exciting.
2) Too many people want them around here and their illegal so we get all the confiscations, I was once in the care of 586 young redbellies, sure they were fun to see eat at that number, but ugh, I'm sick of piranhas.
3) No matter what or how often you feed them, they almost always find a reason to eat a couple of their buddies on a regular basis.

I like them. Its interseting to see them hunt in a pack and work together for supper. Only thing I don't care for it most are skittish, although I have six red bellies about 2-3" and they currently eat out of my hand. Hopefuly they stay this friendly with me :)

No Thanks. They remind me of mini pacu's that eat feeder fish, big deal.. and I HATE Pacus. I think too many people enjoy telling friends 'I have pirhanas.' They are a great conversation peice, and entertaining to watch feed. Eventually they grow old, especially feeding time, and you realize they are just glorified tetras. I could also get some huge bala sharks and tell everyone 'I have sharks.' and teach them to eat feeder guppies.

Thats my opinion :)

I once met a guy who taught his large comet feeder fish (12") to eat small comet feeder fish. It was the most ironic idiocy I have ever seen.

Veyr dull fish, in my opinion...I neither love nor hate them; to me, and this will probably bring the furies of hell down, but alas, to me, RBP, the only piranhas I have direct experience with, are suited to being display fish. They are not active fish, not particularly interesting fish; perhaps if one had a very large pool with several dozen, the intraspecies interactions would be something to watch. Otherwise...dull. I'd much rather watch the squabblings of shelldweller cichlids.

I like em just fine but I don't think I will ever own them, they honestly don't seem any better then any other tetra. The only one I would make an exception for is the back rhom. I think they are very nice looking and being loners is a pluse for me as well.

since starting my hobby of fish just a year ago or so, i have had my fair share of piranhas, actually many of them. at first the idea of them really interested me.

i had a couple different single species serras at different times, and never had to good of a time with them, usually boring. and i also had some smaller shoals of pygos, most recently 5 cariba, but againt they get kind of boring. once they are 5 inches no matter what species, their growth slows dramitcally. thats what i like is watching growth, so i think the only thing that would interest me at this point is buying them big, like a 12+ inch Rhom.

So instead i have decided to get into Ciclids and aros.

Hate em, I had two RB and they were the most boring fish I've ever seen. All they did was sit in the corner all day. I had them for three months and saw them eat twice, and that was when I turned all of the lights in the room off and stood where they couldn't see me and sat and waited like 20 min

They are a three second fish. Ooh pretty..... three seconds later your looking for a pond to through the damn things in. Puffers are fun to whatch eat. Piranhas are just poop fish.

Gotta love em-

A fish is a fish, i dont even understand debate (no dis intended like the thread just like 2 get soap box out now and again) u like this, dont like that, thats human nature ! it is a hobby 2 keep fish, they not toys, u cant 'play' with them, they are not there impress people, keep fish 4 right reasons and there all great, from a goldfish which some use as feeders, while others show loving and attentive care for years right up 2 sharks !As for living up 2 a rep, your fault for believeing hype , piranhas of all types when kept in correct conditions are Amazing ! have a look at large aquarium display of Pygros , my local have 100 Nats all above 12 inches in a huge tank, can stand there 4 ages ! theres no song and dance unless feeding, just a sight 2 behold. I keep large black P , one minute he will b chasing the dog up and down tank , next wont move for ages! ( right now he has face pressed up against glass watching my mouse hand!) . As for the reds i have kept 6 natts for 2 years, although fairly easy 2 spook when comfortable more than 90 percent of the time they are a formidable shoal of fish even a huge chunk of steak was revaged like a burger at a kids party! Have kept lots of other fish Arowanas, dorado, oscars and other cichlids mixed community tanks my favs are ps , yours may not be- bad luck! :naughty:
