i want to breed my clown loach. i have 2 at 8-9 inch and one at 6-7 inch. i heard you let the nitrates go up and then do a water change but leave the tank level lower and then put in coldish water to simulate the rainy period. prior to this you would have fed them loadsa live food s and really fattened them up (mine are bloaters anyway) then they should get randy. i also heard they gotta be big!! anyone know of any other ways or anyone who has links archives or knows anyone who has or has done themselves?? i heard about steroids too?
please help!! :grinyes:

I wish bud. I have gone to some silly extremes trying to induce them to spawn. I have 6 clowns in a 600 gallon pond. All are 10" or better. I have done everything you listed and even plumbed in spray bars to simulate rain. No dice. I sincerely wish you luck with this!

You shouldn't take steroids.

Has anybody ever breed them in captivity?

Yes, but it has been VERY rare. I asked this question already, see if you can find that post in the breeding forum.

It's extremely difficult, but possible. Sites originally posted by guppy.

Very cool article, thanks for sharing. I had assumed they were never bred in captivity. I believe a 17" clown was caught in thailand but I can't remember for sure, it was a long time ago.

when someone posts a link on the internet it HAS to be true! I am not saying that it has not happened but I don't believe it!!!
There is an post on loaches.com, search for breeding loaches, where a Martin Thoene posted an article from a cory forum about breeding difficult spawners. It outlines how to simulate the end of the dry season to the rainny season. I am moving 4 red tail loaches, modesta, into a 50 gal to try this. Was to do this a month ago but got busy, two of the females are carrying eggs so it has to be done soon.
If anybody has any luck triggering the spawing of loaches posting the sucess would help others.
