I'll tell you what I have noticed about Salvinis in my 10 years in the hobby. I have seen and owned them as big as 8.5-9 inches....Their colors can change for the good or bad......meaning I have seen juveniles that looked decent at 2 inches, look not as good at 4......Then I have experienced the exact opposite where I had nice looking Juveniles at 2 1/2 inches that ended up as total beauties at 4 and 5 inches.....I guess the "real" trick is to find them as colorful as possible at a young age and then ask who ever you are buying them from exactly what their water parameters are, that could be causing them to look as they do....When a fish is breeding or when they are very comfortable in their home is when they always look their best

basically males will always be ugly, if you want a single fish go with a female.

I had a pair that looked good for the first month or two. And then the male started beating the female. They never colored up the same after that.

i just like the lesser amount of blue speckles on the females and the fact that the females didn't fight with or kill each other, and therefore were more comfortable. I grew four out when i had them from less than an inch to about a 6" male and 4.5-5" females.
like previously stated though, they can change color for better or for worse, feeding a varied diet and having a clean tank really makes the difference.

What males are BEAUTIFUL!!! My old 6.5" males is a gorgeous fish. I think Females are ugly. They have no pearls or anything. Yes they have nice yellow but I like males way better!
basically males will always be ugly, if you want a single fish go with a female.
the males are far from ugly... unless it is a crap quality male... they should be a nice subtle yellow with shiny blue iridescents on them, and sometimes a hint of red on the stomach or fins.
both males and females have there good and bad points, males arent as bright red/yellow, but females have no blue iridescents whatsoever, really depends on what you are looking for.
if your looking for a wet pet i would never recommend a Salvini anyway, regardless of being male or female, they are stocking predators, they tend to hide, and can be very skittish when on there own.

just ignore him man, your male Sal is one of the best ive seen, not quite as much iridescents, but damn that is bright yellow for a male!
you should think about putting a black background on the tank, would bring out the yellow like crazy!

Here's one of my males. I saved him from a buddies tank. He had HITH but it's pretty much healed now. He was being picked on in the tank he was in and was about 3x smaller than the next smallest fish and wasn't getting much food so I took him home. Here's a pic of him though and people say males are ugly HAHA:screwy:Good food and nutrition goes a long way not only to recover a fish with severe HITH but to come out with colors like these!
