I would say the most aggressive Salt water fish are the Psuedochromis.. they are small and will kill anything in their way.. we are talking about aggression here and not its behavior of eating fish right? If we are talkinga bout the most massive eater, I would say Anglers (Frogfish) I have one that easily swallows a fish that is 2x its own body size!

I had an Undulated once. One day he must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed because he almost wiped out my entire tank. He cost me alittle over $100 in one night! The only survivor was a stupid blue damsel. Why is it the cheap fish always are the last to go?

As far as aggression goes inch for inch I'd say the Undy is the most aggressive fish for saltwater. The Queen, Clown, and Titan get alot bigger though.

Have you guys seen this guys site? Talk about some aggression.

There is a pic in there of his Bumblebee Grouper eating his Tessalata eel!

barracuda. I once went snorkeling with a guide who was missing two fingers from his pet WC barracuda biting his hand for his ring.
Incidentally, I went snorkeling at the place where they filmed jurassic park three, at cor covado in costa rica

Barracuda are extremely aggressive. Most Gymnothroax sp. morays would make a meal of any triggers, even if they had to tear off chunks.

What is the Pseudochromis? is it the same as the "royal gramma"?
Would that angler fish be reef safe?

I was at my lfs a few months back and there was this clown trigger and if anybody or anything was as close as two or three feet from his tank he would charge the front class in a snapping rage. He was feed crayfish, as soon as these feeders hit the water they were dismembered and ripped to shreads. It was the most psyco fish I have ever seen, freshwater included. :WHOA:

My 3+' Green moray is a bad a**. Not all triggers are mean. Some are just kind of agressive. I have a Niger(red tooth) trigger that Is nice to it's tank mates, but is afraid of nothing. When I feed my snowflake eel, the trigger comes after me! However, when I feed my Moray, he is a maniac! If I get my fingers too close....
Fabio actually gave a nice wound to the employee at the LFS! he he :D :D :D :D

yes bro.. the royal grammas.. mean suckers.. Angler is 100% reef safe as long as you dont have any thing that will fit in its mouth..

I would say my Dragon eel is pretty mean.. bit me twice and left some serious teeth marks... besides that.. i couldnt stop the bleeding for 30 minutes .. T_T

If we are talking aggression only, size for size hands down will be a pseudochromis, they are mean bullies and have been known to bullie around fish 10x's their size.

If talking about king of the tank, the Octopus is king.

I would have to agree, triggers are by far the ost agressive marine fish I have ever seen.

jrwagner
04-12-2006, 3:08 PM
my triggers are pretty fearless, but i have to say that one that picks on everybody is my blue damsel... i took him out of the reef tank (due to harrassing other fish) and put him in my fish only wich has a few triggers..and a porcupine puffer, just so he would be eaten. BUT he goes after my puffer who is at least 4 times bigger, at least!!! I tip my hat to the blue damsel that wont die.

lizardfishman
04-12-2006, 9:59 PM
i'm gunna have to say that damsels are the most aggressive sw fish. they will attack almost anything that intrudes on thier territory. i've been bittin by some when diving. i went to a museum once and they had a big tank with sharks and eels and a pair of 4" damsels. someone asked a person there y the damsels hadnt been eaten and they said that the damsels chased bit anything that would come near them. the sharks and eels were 4'+ too.

Ornatapinnis

Blue line triggers (P. fuscus) Queen Triggers, virridescens triggers & undulate triggers are about as mean as it gets.

I agree that many of the other fish listed here have some serious attitude but if all fish were the same size and were paired against each other, any of the above fish would would be the last one standing.

Tessalata eels are very agressive. I have had several of them all with bad attitudes. Green moray are a close second to the tessalata. Dragon moray are pretty mild manored.

Many grouper are pretty mean, like miniatus for example but, Panther grouper are wusies.

Contrary to popular belief, Barracuda are wimps and often get killed in agressive aquariums, same goes for sharks and rays.

Royal gramma are not pseudochromis and are not mean fish. True pseudochromis are mean for thier size but again, if paired against most triggers of the same size, they wouldn't stand a chance.

Puffers are major wussies....

Hey, they are all really cool fish. I don't care who the meanest is, I like them all.....

The most aggresive fish ive seen is a Domino Damsel LOL. It had to be housed alone cause it kept killing stock. It then got placed in a massive aquarium with Triggers, puffers, eels, and a shark, and its still there... :O

ogre929
04-13-2006, 5:51 AM
Most aggressive fish I've ever owned or even seen in my life was my tomato clown fish. You couldn't put your hand in the 100 gal tank without it attacking you. Several times it became airborne going after my hand. And if my hand did go in the tank, it would bite the soft skin between my fingers and death roll!

Scuba Oz
04-13-2006, 11:16 AM
I have a Tomatoe like that also, that SOB has gotten me a few times, it has gotten to the point where I watch him more than the Lion in there for saftey!! LOL

first hand experience ... a fish labeled as the "Sri-Lanka Basslet" or "Vampire Basslet" is actually pseudochromis steenei ... it has the most testosterone for its size than any other fish in the sea ... dont plan on keeping much else with this guy is just plain mean. You can see all the teeth coming out of his mouth as soon as you see it. Active fish though, very curious in behavior ... the only thing i would keep with it if anything would be an undulated triggerfish (extremely aggressive ... but different behavior) or an eel. This is a species best kept single, which is nice because the bright orange color or with a female or two. :headbang2

When I kept saltwater I had a picasso trigger that was a total bad ass. He ate all my fricken snails in the tank and would attack my hand whenever I worked on the tank. I finally had to get rid of him when he got too big and mean for my other fish. Also had a panther grouper that would eat about anything that would fit in its mouth.

You want top preditor in an aquarium then you want the aquarium's white shark research project is a collaborative multi-year study of white sharks off the California coast. They are exhibiting a young white shark so would say that wins hands down:grinyes:

Any type of fish has the ability to become aggressive, however there are certain specimens which have been labeled "agressive" much like the Pitbulls of the dog world. From my personal experience I have seen very aggressive Triggers but at the same time very passive triggers. Same goes from Moray Eels, Sharks, Angels ect. I guess it all depends on the fish its self, however Moray Eels such as the Tessalata and the Green Moray have the power, size, and temper to be one of the most aggressive Marine fish, along with Sharks ofcourse if provoked, oh ya cant forget triggers. I tend to find triggers more of a pain than aggressive however.

turbo21
05-01-2007, 10:30 AM
i deffinitely agree with brenden, i too have seen vicious and very passive triggers

the one that you can always count on being extremely aggressive is a mantis shrimp, i have never seen nor heard of one that was passive

Well if we're talking Home aquaria - then it's most like the triggers.

But if we're talking open ocean - then either large sharks like Tigers & Bulls, or large triggers like Titans.

aren't moray eels suposed to kill everything

I had a 4' Green moray and a 4' Tessalatta moray in a 180. I grew them both from under a foot. They would attack anything that came NEAR the tank. I used to pretend to try to catch them with a big net to scare em off a LITTLE bit then have an armed guard on duty when it was time to clean the glass :screwy: They were bar far the nastiest things I've ever kept. The Green guy ate a 14" horn shark I tried to introduce. He lasted less than a day. A $135 mistake :D

I have to agree with whoever said damsels. They are true a$$holes.

I would have to disagree. I have kept mant different species and individual mantises. They each have their own personalities and Ive had some that were true wusses and some that were completley bloodthirsty. They can really f@#$ up a blue ring octopus though!!

I vote for Damsels. They eventually turn into bastards that no one wants. LOL

As far as constant aggression goes...my vote would be damsels as well. I still have a black damsel (Neoglyphidodon melas) that was the first fish I bought when I started in the SW hobby years ago and he is relentless. He does a good job at distracting the other monsters from each other, so I keep him in there.

I was having issues with my trigger, and the damsel was the first one to put him in his place when I combined my tanks. As soon as any fighting starts to happen the damsel comes shooting out and tends to break it up. :screwy:

TITAN triggers are crazy aggressive. Thats what I would say. Morays are agressive also, but in a more " I'm always hungry I want to eat you way". The Titan just kills everything, for no apparent reason.

Brenden

A Blacktip Reef Shark is one of the last Sharks I would be afraid of. They have the speed and intelligence to be a threat, however they tend to have a more passive nature.

krj-1168

yeah - Blacktip Reefs tend to be wimps among sharks.

The most aggressive "aquarium" Sharks is the Bull Shark. Granted I'm talking Public Aquariums - not home aquaria.

In my experience, golden travellies AKA pilot fish are the most aggressive of all saltwater fish. They aren't afraid of anything. They will even challenge sharks for their food.
As for bull sharks, my queensland grouper dominates my bull shark so bull sharks are really not that fierce.

Undulated triggers are consistently nasty across the board. With the exception of Titans, which I have no experience with, other triggers vary fish to fish. My clown trigger was the most laid back fish I've ever owned. Very surprising for a trigger.

11-04-2007, 12:28 AM
agreed, i had an undulatus trigger straight from hell. chomped through a much larger black volitan and ate clean through a brown banded bamboo shark. The thing was also pretty much indestructible. Once adjusted, true barraccuda are pretty intimidating in a tank as well.
