does anyone kno of a miniature monster catfish? im setting up an 80 gal. and wanted a couple, or just one, catfish that basically would eat everything, really active, really territrial, cool markings/ bright colors, and of course long wiskers.

this is what i dont want.

- pictus catfish
- asian redtail
- south american red tail (i prolly wouldnt be able to house these two either)
- bull shark
- poroon catfish/ iridescent shark
- sun catfish
_ lima shovel nose

what i was thinking was...

- jaguar catfish
- tiger shovel nose or a smaller variation.
- yellow belly bullhead ('cause their cool)

the bull head would be the best choice you could have one and maybe a larger cichlid in the 80 gallon.

You did say miniature monster cat fish well a tiger shovel nose can grow up to 80inches (2m) .

Miniature to me for an 80gal aquarium would be:

. African walking catfish (clarias gareipinus) about 30inches long.

. (Wallago attu) ! no common name i'm affraid ! 80inches long.

. Dolphin cat (Oxdoras Niger) 33inches long.

. Mother of snails catfish 25inch or more not too sure.

. Clarias catfish 20inches or more.

Hope these help you on your quest to find what you need .

I also vote for the Juruense, though it may not meet your 'eat everything' requirement. Problem with getting RTCs and TSNs is that you basically have to give them up for free to the petshop once the either one of them gets beyond 16 inches, and you have to have good relations with the petshop as well in order to do it most times..

Consider these 'not so monsters' but interesting cats nonetheless...

Chaca sp.

Pseudopimelodus raninus

Jaguar Catfish - Liosomadoras oncinus

For more of an 'odd-ball' cat, try some from the Cetopsis genus. Having a small school of around 4 individuals should be pretty neat. Small versions of the Paroon shark, IMO. I haven't kept them, but I have read that you can't mix them with any fish, as they will attack everthing in the tank, regardless of size. I have absolutely no idea if this is totally fictitious or not, but if anyone has kept them, I would be interested if this was true or not. They sure are pretty neat looking though!!

If you're looking for a mini-monster catfish. The hands down winner has to be Bagarius bagarius. These cats grow to about 8", need cooler temps (75 or lower), and have to have strong currents/clean water. For your efforts, you'll have a cat that can move like greased lightning and has a mouth full of teeth that would make a barracuda run for cover.

...and I bet it hides in decor 23/6, like its larger brethren.

I use a red darkroom light. It worked on crustaceans so, I figured I'd try it on the cats. I guess they can't percieve the red light because they're as active under it as they are when I turn the lights out.

i discovered this catfish about a year ago and looked and looked and looked but could not find anyone who sold them, so like i usually do, i forgot all about them. thanx for reminding me. and if you could point me in the right direction to were i could get one, that would be great. and since they need a temp lower than 75. can they be at a constant 72 degrees F.? thats the temp my tanks run at when i dont have a heater on them.

72 is fine. Just make sure you have a really strong current. My tank is between 69-72 and I'm pumping 800gph through a 65gal. No gravel in this tank. Just large river rock and a couple of large flat pieces of granite for the cat to suction to.

My suggestion would be to go with the bullhead. Mine has grown from a fry to 10" in just over 10 months. He has a massive head and lots of attitude.

The other thought would be for a gulper catfish. They get to around a foot, although from what I have seen on them they would likely eat all your cichlids.

youll never be able to get a gulper cat. Ask oddball, in a previous thread he said that only like 3 were for sale in the U.S. last year, and they are like $500.

If you want a real tankbuster cat that isnt going to get real huge go for a black devil cat (Mystus wyckii) they get to about 28" and they cannot be kept with anything else long term. They are mean.

Pieces Aquarium in Calgary (CDN) had a tank with 30, 1.5" gulpers for $19.99 each.
I am thinking that maybe I should not have passed on them.

I would either get a Bagarius Bagarius, a Psuedopimelodus Bufonis or if you can get your hands on one, a Gulper Cat.

Or you could get a Chaca Chaca, they are really cool too.
