They are either threatened or endangered all over. One of the coolest fish around, but only suitable for ponds or streams. They get huge, and don't do well at all in tanks in the long run. There was a breeding program at Parks and Wildlife that was abandoned because a)they are tough to keep in captivity even at a hatchery and b)unfortunately there aren't a lot of good places for them in the wild in Texas anymore, but you can still find them in the eastern part of the state.

I bought 5 from Mckenzie's Fish Farm and 2 survived to a little over 4 ft in a 18ft diameter kiddie pool with a 4ft fence around it. When I transferred to another destroyer, I tried selling then, giving them away with no takers. Hated to do it but, had a 'fish-fry' party before having to move to the ship.
They ate krill, plankton, salmon pellets, earthworms, bloodworms, Bshrimp, chopped squid, flake, chopped chicken/beef hearts... pretty much anything I threw in was investigated as a potential food item.

I found a web site in Austria that has them but to get a price list you need to have them e-mail you. http://members.nextra.at/aquaculture/findex.htm They also have grayling, pike-perch, and burbot. All "CITES" legal.

I keep a young paddle fish for the moment. He came in 3 month ago.
He is 25 cm long and I keep it in a 100 X 80 cm aquarium, just the time he gets used to floating food like Ikari etc ... For the moment he doesn't eat much because it's winter here and the temperature is between 4 and 10 C° . But he takes bloodworms and artemias without problems.

In fact, they are my favourite fishes ( see my name ! ) and I kept already four of them in my life . The biggest ones rised 75 cm.

In those times, I stayed in an appartment in town and these fishes where kept in aquariums, then in a pond 2,50 m X 1,80 m, 50 cm deep .

My first paddlefish grew very well and I kept it for one year but he jumped out of his tank.

The second one was already very sick when I rescued it ( fungus ) and I didn'nt succed to save it. He never accepted food.

And the last two ones where kept for more than two years, in the pool, becoming big, too big, and they finally crashed their head on the walls because of fear ( they are quite timid ).

Now I live in the country and with my new little one, I hope to keep it for a long time .
In the spring, he will go in a big pound of 10 m X 5 m with other sturgeons.

Paddle fishes are not easy to find.
They are Cites II listed, so it needs paper work to get them.
Some dealers in Asia can ship them .

You catch these in the river here in Montana. When you catch them they are full of eggs. Anyone know of a way to "milk" a male and fertilize the eggs? I thought it would be fun to see a small one of these. I figured they would be too hard to keep until i saw this thread!

I know it is old, but they are about to start running this year, and I only get the oppurtunity to get the eggs once a year. Just wondering if it could even be possible to sucessfully to get some fry going this way. If anyone had experience.. you know...

Im sorta new to the MFk, sorry to bump an old post. Just saw someone asking for pictures and none had been posted.

Yeah I dont know how people can eat a fish that looks like that.

Im not even sure how people who claim to be hobbyists eat their own fish.

I cant eat my natives.....It just doesn't feel right..Kind of like cannabilism or something.

I see them like children.:D

They are hard to keep, you really need a large round tank. I have seen them for sale locally.

Nothing better that seeing a troubled, native prehistoric pile of rotting fish simply to cull the eggs.

Can you legally sell the eggs (or any parts thereof) of any wild creature without special permits?

Im allowed to keep 8 paddlefish per day in my state! They are not endangered here.

And yes I can legally sell the eggs on a small scale.

I'm glad this got bumped back up. We were talking about fishing for them the other day. One guy claimed he saw them here in WV when he was young. That's why I'm here now. Doing some research. Thanks.

A friend of mine, a biology professor, has an old friend who has a massive tank and does research on them. I do not know the details, but the tank is BIG, likely many thousands of gallons. I'll have to contact him and get some info, maybe pics.
