Well it being dead definitely helps...once it starts to rot, it would get a little less heavy, and obviously wouldn't fight anymore ;)

the water gushing off the fish's head suggests that guy was just heaving it up quickly to get the pic.;)

His left hand is in the gillplate on the side supporting a lot of the weight. Right hand is just stabilizing the tail.

I spent this past summer in Mongolia.
They have the worlds largest Salmon. It's called a Taimen, guess it's a prehistoric type salmon fish.

I didn't get a chance to see any.
I was there as a Chef / instructor and I was at the market every day and didn't see any fresh fish there, just frozen stuff from China.

Check this out!

Scientists working in the Eg and Uur rivers in northern Mongolia (http://www3.nationalgeographic.com/places/countries/country_mongolia.html) in 2006 found this 5-foot-long (1.5-meter-long) taimen that had choked to death on a 3-foot-long (0.9-meter-long) taimen.

Did you look at his face? Or his body? He's obviously straining some to lift it. I see no reason it couldn't be real

That salmon looks pretty scary, and yeah the guy got to have some kind of strain to hold something that large.

Don't you mean "extinct"

instinct is a behavior inherited by the species, pre programmed type thing.

That is one monster fish indeed. Looks like a horrid beast from a black lagoon.

I'd love to see a salmon that big. The only ones I've seen are typically already turned into fillets.

You are not far from decent salmon fishing, just head south about 2 1/2 hours to Vancouver/Portland area. The Columbia river and others and the area area all home to very fishable populations of kings, not to mention sturgeon and steelhead.
And if you just want to see them swimming around, go the Seattle Aquarium next to the market and they got a few in their tanks.

Well this year wasn't, but there are usually pretty good fisheries in our area QueueBa11, and lots of options for those without boat (Charters, Piers, etc.)
Another good place to see big salmon is the Locks. They have viewing windows at the fish ladder.
