View Full Version : Can you guess what's gonna go into this MONSTROSITY?

Finally, got the new tank inside the house and gonna start cycling it tomorow. :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2My marble pims are the guinea pigs for the water since i got nowhere else to put them :( (they are 8" and 10"). Their old aquarium is outside ... no place to put it!!!!! Don't worry i will be using the old aquarium water for it (+new water) as well as old filter material and all that. I will add the water from the nearby silver tank later on during the water change

The tank is 8'x3'x2' (LxWxH). The moving part was rather difficult and painful. It still needs to be turned around. Cos it is tinted on back and sides to make it darker (the last pic is after application of tint).

Still looking for black gravel - i hope it is OK to add gravel with them inside

So, anybody can guess what's going into this new set-up? No, it is not an upgrade for the existing residents - totally new order (due to arrive at the end of this month)

PS: the one with a canopy is the old one - the new one does not have one yet. The blue tanks are temp homes for pims. The old water and filter material will also go into the new aquarium.

Well, since the thread is in the aro section that was a safe guess, BUT which aro?

Nope. i have two already. Those would not fit in this set-up anyhow :naughty: marble pims are temporary residents only. heheheh there will be bottom dwelling fish for sure - not RTC though

Come on, guys. Not that a difficult guess surely :D

That's a very neat tank. Would love to see the final setup.:)

I am anxious to see the final set-up too ^^ but that is in three weeks time. Should be nice and colorful, i am trying out the tinting effect (should help conceal the algae too)

Nice to see you have friends. When I brought my 135g home it was me and a skateboard to get it from the truck to inside the house. Please keep the pics coming!:)

Hehehehe, this is Asian service. Those guys came to deliver the stand and i asked them to move the aquarium while they were at it ... promise of the further business is always a good incentive ;) the owner wants to be the one to do the canopy for the tank too - plus my father is a very good customer for the owner's furniture ... i can not imagine moving a 135g by myself (salut to you, mate)

Rays?:)

Rays? Tempting but the tank mates are not ray friendly - so no. In any case, i got one ray now and after the loss of its mate (don't know why) - i am not so hot about getting another one (too much heartbreak and i guess i am too new to rays) - but i love my remaining ray - sooo cute

More info on tank please. Manufacturer? Glass thickness? Etc

Manufacturer is a local LFS. Glass is manufactured in Thailand - in accordane with TIS (thai industrial standard).

It is half inch glass (12.5mm)... seemed to be ok according to all the websites i have seen. There is in-built filtration system - sorta like wet-dry. I am thinking of adding an extra mechanical filter...

CHILI RED ARO? Etc

We have one right on answer :headbang2Kaiju Premium Red - what else?

RTG, silver, and green.

Almost right. One of the entries is wrong :naughty:

Sounds pretty typical. I always wonder the same when I make a fish purchase while she is at work. Just wait until she notices him swimming in the tank. But in your case that is a little different. Nah, it is gonna be the same. If my GF was around then i would not have been able to conceal the tank+cycling and all that ...but she is not da country right now, so it will be a surprise when she returns at the end of the year to a completed (cycled and stocked) new tank :grinno:

The tint is done. see the last pic except that the tank is still back to front. It has been rotated and filled with old + new water + old and new filter material - heater is also in to help speed up the cycling

Marble pims are in. Mmmm, the full fish room shot? You can sorta see my small fish room, but i don't have the photos of the cycling tank. i am down south of my country now (will be back on weekend to check on cycling - new pix after)

Hehehehe i do have the other pics of the fish from the vendor in case some one guess correctly more residents :naughty:

The other three are bottom dwellers - correct. Hint: from South America

The other remainder are two aro types

Nay ... i don't think we have them here locally ... too similar looking to gator (to me at least) to import from ... hmmm i am not even sure they have those in Singapore

The three bottom dwellers are from same family but different clasification AND are all from south america (hint: pretty AND useful fish)

heheheh the thought did occured to me ^^ though guppies here are not so cheap ... well cheaper than in Australia. My LFS carries very clean guppies cos they are never sold as feeders rather as ornaments ... come to think of it, no one uses guppies, mollies etc as feeders ...for feeders we use fish hatcheries ... very clean fry for feeding :naughty: and cost a fraction of an ornamental fish value (size for size, 20 times less) ... guppy size feeder would cost 1 cent (4 cent for a medium comet size)

Hmmm, this is exactly what my older brother said" basically don't put all your eggs in the same basket lol

I am not concerned for aggression (you are right 5+ almost no risk)... more for water readiness (two more weeks to go). At the moment the water is cycling with two marble pims (~10" each ...so shoulda been eating and pooing and everything) together with two walking feeder catfishes. All fish has grown remarkably while in the new set-up. Pims seem to be active - could be due to strong current. I did not want to use feeders (did not want risk infecting the new tank with something new).

The ultimate test will come this weekend, when i will take the green aro and put him into the new set-up....after the canopy is completed. If he is OK, the rest should be OK also.

As of Sunday there were still nitrite readings (i have finally found a liquid test kit in the marine shop) but the pims do not seem to be bothered (eatig like pigs and all that) so that is a good sign. I have left two pieces of shrimp in the sump for extra amonia generation - plus maintaining a heater at 28C (cos getting cooler now).

PS: will be adding the pix of the completed set-up minus canopy tonight :D

Surprisingly armatus is actually not that expensive around here (less than your RTG to be sure) - but i have finally ran out of tank space i think ...hmmm may have to replace my 7' with 8' later on ... something to think about i suppose ... the fish room will be awefully crowded

Just an update on the tank that is cycling plus the temporary residents ^^ notice how big the pims have got ...they did not eat the feeders which were with them for ages (so decontamintated) - one escaped because of no canopy situation.

the tank looks completely black with tinted back and sides as well as black gravel. Pims are almost invisible :naughty: i can see that a canopy with light will be a must for viewing (hopefully this weekend finished so that a test subject green aro can be move to test water for arriving aros) ... i am starting to question my design for all black tank (but it looked so cool in my friend's place with light on ... i did not realize it was THIS dark)... actually it was not so bad without black gravel (but it looked really ugly from the top .... hmmm i wonder if it is possible to easily remove the tint ... (this is tint for cars btw)

PS: this time in two weeks all the residents will be there :D:D:D:D:D:D:D it is a count down

Pims are not staying as permanent residents - they together with a green aro (not yet put) are testing water for the set-up

"you dont need money if youve got fish":ROFL::ROFL: but you do :ROFL::ROFL: those eat eat quite a lot it seems (sat down and did the math - OUCH)

i did not realize that 3' was that big until i saw it. One foot difference really makes a huge diff. next to 2' set-up this is HUGE (of course no match for the outdoor - but this is indoor!!!)

The first day with fish in the tank is gonna be sleepless for i think :D i am not too worried about large red, xb and blue-based (these are 12"). I am more concerned about the juvi green, black and HBRTG (these are 6"). It is like two groups of different sized fish.... got some HDPE pipes (these are jet black) that i will be hiding inside the tank with some gravel to create hiding bits for fancy plecos.

The plan is the put all in the same tank... plan B is to put smaller fish in the 7' and move 3 silvers to this one.... don't know what to do with jar (if put with smaller residents it may turn homicidal) .... hmmm stressful choice. I hope all new residents can stay in the new home.

PS: i would be really ticked off if red, XB and blue-base start to fish ... should not be the case with so much space - but who knows ...like i said, sleepless night there i think

PS: waiting for the canopy to be ready. i have seen black tank lighted up - looks really cool

Well, this time next week, i should be waiting for plane from Bangkok (transit from Singapore) to arrive in Vientiane Airport :headbang2:headbang2:headbang2 ... i still remember getting my guinea pig out of cargo section (i broght her back from Perth when i returned some years ago - good move, she lived for another 4 years before passing away at 7 year old) ... getting off track here (happens at this age ^^)

I must be getting paranoid though :(, i am worrying about the current's strength on fishes ... on 6" ones (black, green HBRTG) in particular ... hmmm what about bigger ones at 12" (the rest) ...how are they going to do with strong current? (i use the same pump as in my other aquarium except that previous set-up discharged on top, while the new set-up discharges through the bottom - thus stronger current i think)...

plecs i am not worried cos there are hiding places installed (HDPE pipes cut in half)

<sigh > ... have not put in the green aro for testing yet ... canopy is not yet ready ... marble pims are OK (eating and pooping and cycling the tank). Temp is cranked up at 30C

In my experence unless you have a group of 6 or more aros the bigger one will pick on the smaller one.In groups of 6 or more ususaly the smallers ones are left alone ( unless they fit inside the bigger ones mouth):D

Kinda difficult to tell. three 12" and three 6" .... theoretically a 12 incher can eat 6 incher. I have seen jar do something similar (large jar ate a large claris without barbs). this point is OK i guess, i have back-up tank to put the smaller fish in - in case there is trouble ^^

What about current issue? what would be considered too strong? (especially for smaller 6" fish). Is there such thing?

There is a BIG set back :cry::cry::cry: unrest in Thailand and takeover of Suvanaphumi Airport!!!! :irked::irked::irked: These demonstrators are crazy:screwy::screwy::screwy:

All flights are currently suspended. I am not risking having fish stuck in customs (they allow inbound flights in the air but not outbound).

The new date is now 5th of DEC 08 - hopefully by that time the political situation in Thailand is calmer ....

I am soooooo pissed now:irked::irked::irked:

PS: the green aro is in (since yesterday) and testing the water (not eating but that is normal for newly moved aro). Still alive and current does not seem to bother it too much - that is the good news :grinno: ... so now there are two mable pims and green aro testers

I think since Monday. Anti-government protestors stormed Suvanaphumi Airport.:screwy::screwy::screwy: ... lots of stranded tourists. There is a warning not to travel to Thailand from many governments. Currently, the airport is still locked down - i hope, they will release airport next week - hence delay in delivery of MY FISH!!!!

PS: for more info check either BBC or CNN or bangkokpost.net it is all over the news - what a mess!!:irked:

^ it's mental here at the moment, both iternational airports have been taken over by the mob in Bangkok.
they were shooting at each other yesterday!!
The funny thing is though, I look out of my office window and it's like life as normal.
The country is on the brink of civil war.

I know where he's coming from, this is South East Asia. In the last 60 years there have been 17 coups in Thailand alone.
there's always some sort of nonsense going on.
I'd be worried about my fish as well, if the locals want to shoot each other because of a political divide let them.
Can you imagin Mcain's camp shooting at Obama supporters just because they lost the election?
That's why they're doing it here.
Not to take the thread the wrong way, but all i care about is my own, if the tanks come out again and they've got different colours on them I'm straight the the British Embassy with my family, passports in hand.
My brother in law will come pick up my fish and take it to the countyside where he lives and look after it. sounds cynical I know, but this is Thailand and if you've never lived here you can't understand it. riots, coups, run of the mill.
I feel sorry for the stranded tourists though but they've been put up in a five star hotel until they can fly out again so i guess not so many will be worried.

Dude, imagine if my fish were scheduled to arrive this Monday - ALL would be DEAD by now (several thousand worth of fish). Flights to Vientiane were suspended until today.

But you are wrong in certain aspect - it is not only the fish i care about, as a neighbor to Thailand, i have money riding on their stock market (which has melted down in line with the rest of the world AND some more due to their anarchy right now) as well as their currency (which is a bust now too).

I do hope that their instability does not spill over here <sigh> troubling times indeed

It is weird. Our BKK office is business as usual - all looks normal on the streets of BKK if you are not the area of unrest. I am sure the effect will start to be felt soon. Imagine, Thai airway was 40+ THB at one moment now it is 7.5 THB per share - MELT DOWN. Imagine what happens to tourism!!!

I hope the situation (at least in airport) clears up next Friday ...

Don Muang airport officially opens tonight a 6.
Suvanaphumi Airport officially opens tomorrow.
both are still full of the mob, the gov has declaired emercency rule in those areas, airforce and navy boys have been drafted in to help shift the mob.
No army boys, but military movments have been reported.
The general romour was for an army coup last night at 11pm. Ity seemed like common knowledge.
I think the Army have given the gov a deadline, sort it, or we will.

Well, got some time to do an update since my trip this weekend from back home. <sigh> as expected no fish on 2nd of DEC due to closure of Suvanaphumi Airport over the weekend as well as MON and TUE.

The scoop, the airport should be releasing flights tonight (i believe the first flight will be to Rome) but is not expected to be up and running for another week or so (optimistically).

My kind dealer agreed to postpone shipments until the situations stablizes completely. BTW, there is still a chance that mess is not over if after reconvening of Thai government on 8th DEC (next monday), the re-shuffled cabinet may still be rejected by the protesters ... so i am holding my breath.

Meanwhile, my canopy is delayed (or i could not be bothered nor had any heart to push the guy for it)... nevertheless, got some pix of my tough marbles who have growns quite substantially in the month that they were cycling the tank for the future residents. Checkout them long whiskers (Longibardis indeed) and fat bellies. Did not test the water, but should be OK since the green aro guinea pig is swiming and eating normally <sigh> ... the angle of swim does not go away - i am reconciled that i have a funny swimmer. None of the fish are gasping or anything.

This year i installed heaters in all my indoor set-ups in time so none of the indoor guys are affected ... the outdoor set-up is faring less well without a heater. The water temp is at around 20-22C ... a bit low for RTC and Paimas (OK for gar though) ... the air temp goes down to 16-17 during the night, but goes back up during the day substantially - more on outdoor set-up later (nobody died yet ... but then same same last year)

PS: the walking cat has grown from 0.5" to 4" in a month !!! the other walking kitties have all jumped ship from marbles chasing them i think

My bad guys ... i don't have internet at home ^^ i have to go to internet cafe to do my surfing (when i am out of da office).

Just to let you guys know that the fish have arrived safe and well (aros at least). I had to separate black, green and HBRTG cos they were wayyy too small to be safely put with the blue, red and X-back (kinda morcel size) ... plus marble pims definitely wouda eaten them (they are 1 foot plus now - i seriously underestimated their size).

Sorry for the lack of pictures but i am looking for a card reader ... forgot it on site.

The fish are now divided between two acquariums. The big and puny one ... those small three devils ate all my hard-found neon tetras already ... still too small for the tiger barbs and hatchet fish ... soon enough i suppose.

THEY EAT HIKARI PELLETS!!!!! not blue and red though ... the others took to pellets straight away. they also accept crickets and small shrimp. No live food in winter for them.

PS: marble pims are relegated to outdoor set-up cos they were bothering the aros ... the red aro is stressed out (the fins are starting to spall). Blue base is swimming funny. X-back is completely fine. The other small aros are doing excellent.

PS: sorry for lack of pix ...coming soon - i promise

PS: sadly one pleco perished shortly after arrival =(

Meanwhile, here are the pictures in no particular order.

Big tank: Red, Bluebase and X-back + L600 (old green aro was moved back with silvers)
Small tank: Black, green and HBRTG + L25 (L24 did not make it :()

Most (except plecos, red and blue) take HIKARI!!!!!!:headbang2:headbang2:headbang2

Did a small water changes in each set-ups this morning ... One marble pim was eaten by RTC in the outdoor set-up (had to move them cos they were bothering new aros) ... more on that later with picture of a very FAT RTC

PS: something is wrong with my pump in the big set-up ... this is gonna be a long night <sigh>
