Sweet lung. I'm doing a paper on these guys (well extant sarcopterygians as a whole) right now. From what I've read, P. aethopicus at least it terms of length is supposed to be the largest

If my comp hadn't crashed, I could have sent you a paper tracing the origin of tetrapods to either sarcopterygia or dipnoi.
That's a nice fish. That floating bit of a plant a snack?

erm....no...the plant is just in there....i dun knw where it came from. Its a holding tank. I call this guy a nasty bastard cuz he's completely disemboweled 4 goldfishes that live in a completely diff area of the pond. He travelled there.....just to hunt the Goldfish...not feeders!!!

WOW beautiful patterns!!
P. aethiopicus aethiopicus is the largest. Yours is P. aethiopicus congicus, which supposedly stays smaller.

supposedly? and how big is "smaller"? hahaha

well according to fishbase, P.a.congicus gets to about half the size of P.a.aethiopicus. But who really knows exactly how much smaller, anyhow i suppose the consensus is that it's smaller.
Well it looks more like a P. Aethiopicus Aethiopicus to me...the patern looks allot like a congicus...but these fish have so many different paterns and colors, from almost completely black to grey ( a little blue-ish).. If you look at the body shape and the fins the place where the anal fin starts and especially the girth of the fish it's a P.A.A. for sure.
p.s that sure as hell is one great looking lungfish I envy you for sure.
how is it's temprament?

it...is one evil bugger. It was ok for 3 years. Apparently it has been plotting to make a go at my mum's goldfishes. Went in there and shredded 7 of them. Thats why he's in the fiberglass tank now.

Well that's what these guys eat...fish.
And that it took 3 years before he ate them..wow. usualy goldfish only last a few hours/minutes. with lungfish.
I'm curious if you can show us some pictures when it went in to the pond (how big it was) and what it looked like when it was young.

No they go over 3ft don't know how big, but they do get way over 3ft when they are in a captive enviroment.

I have one look similar to yours and now size 27". Based on the pattern, I think it should be P. aethiopicus congicus. The maximum growth size is about 4ft. :):)
