I was checking out Aqua Mojo and saw the link to the Cichlid Scene, saw this cool Midas on the logo so I went to check it out. In the picture gallery I found this little guy.

Thats a barred midas. They were all the rage about 2 years ago. Now the demand kinda tapered off and people want the white and orange variety.

I'd love to keep a barred midas myself, and that specimen is quite impressive. If that is Bighead himself, Jeff Rapps sells his fry.
nice looking fish besides the huge ****ing tumor looking thing on his head

That is his nuchal hump. A feature that many adult male new world cichlids share.

That tumor is what cichlid breeders all around the world hope for in their fish. :)

ham & eggs...
seriously dat feature (the huge hump head) is wat a LOT of us desire & hope to get fr our fish. at 1st I thought it was grotesque 2, but as time went by it grew upon me (in a big way). wat separates an exceptional cichlid from his peers? the nuchal hump (among other things). otherwise they all look the same. just look at jags, umbie, JDs, oscars, other humpless cichlids, they all look the same. nothing really distinctive among their peers.
humps/koks is where its at. amphilophus spieces rule!!!
So you think an umbie resembles and oscar?..Thats an interesting point of veiw...

Both of those are very ridiculous statements.

How big is that tank? dimensions?

I wouldn't say 'ridiculous'. I think the point he was trying to illustrate is that the fish look like fish, and a Midas with a huge nuchal hump does not look like a fish one would expect.
If you were to bring someone to a fish show, and they didn't keep fish at all, they would pass by the oscars, umbe, etc., and would probably enjoy them as fish. Then they would see those midas, and they would probably stop and ask a few questions about it. Probably out of most of those fish, the Midas (or any other fish with huge nuchal humps, really) would stand out as it would make an impact. I can see why those statements were made.

wow!!!!! what a very nice midas you have..... :22_yikes:
Rui,
Have you ever seen a good sized umbie in person before? Once they hit 14" I guarentee nobody would pass them by. Their color and patterns are amazing.

No, I don't mean to say that umbies are ugly, or anything of that nature. In fact, I have been waiting on pins and needles hoping a shop in town would bring a few in. What I was trying to get across is that a midas with a huge nuchal hump does not look like a fish really, and thus, people would probably remember it more. It is not to say that umbies/dovies/whatever else aren't nice fish, or that the Midas is a 'nicer' fish (it is my personal favorite), but just the fact that it looks more like an 'alien' to people who don't know about fish.

Is there a difference between MIDAS & RED DEVILS?
I'm breeding RD's. Can you tell when they are Juveniles whether they will grow a good hump?
