Was at my LFS and they were selling Bamboo Shrimp. I have never seen these before and was wondering if they are a hardy species? They were pretty big, about 2" but the kid working at the store said that they were harmless to even small fish. True or not??

THANKS!

I had one a long time ago. He didnt harm any of my fish. They are filter feeders. Have Fans to collect Food particles from the air. My advice if u do get 1 Make sure that there is NO WAY from it to escape. and if u are missing yours check your filter first. Mine went up into there and when i chnaged the filter media He would pop out

Don't pass them up!

I have 3 right now in my planted 35. One is two years old, one is a little over a year, the the thrid is new.

They are really cool, they sit in the filter flow with their little "fans" open to catch food. I have a power head near the bottom of my tank and they also sit in front of that. They will crawl around and pick stuff off the gravel sometimes. They change colors from bright red to orange and brown.

They like soft to neutral clean water with high flow areas so they can fan for food.

They are also known as wood shrimp and singapore shrimp.

Anyone know for sure or have an opinion if the Bamboo shrimp are from cold water or tropical water?

And if they are pure fresh or should have some salt?

Our LFS keeps the bamboo shrimp in cold water (goldfish section), and they seem to do great. I bought a few several times and put them into my community 30gallon and they never lasted very long.

I want to try again, but it just breaks my heart every time they die.

They are also sold as wood, Singapore, fan, and flower shrimp. They do best at a near neutral pH but are adaptable, they are sensitive to temperature changes and need temps between mid 70s F to mid 80s, They collect alwost all their food from the water column itself, espesially where there is a bit of currnt, They are a bit soft bodied so many fish eat them.
They will accept moderately brackish environment and their larvae require a strongly brackish water to mature.

Be careful about what you house them with. I had one that was attacked and eaten right after he molted. I found the front part of the "shell", the back part, and some scattered shrimp meat. Poor lil' guy:cry:

They are cool i had one but it got sucked up in my power head. I got it out but it only lasted a few days after that it was the bigest one I've seen about 3 inches:(

how big is your powerhead?

these shrimp lack the big claws, so wont do anything to your fish, and will just catch food that is drifting in the water column

they have these at my petco with a stick of bamboo for each one (idiots) they say they have to have water bamboo to live very long (idiots)
