i did a search but didn't find what i was looking for ..... i have read from a few people that you can keep smaller fish with rb . I'm soon gonna set up a 135 gallon tank and was going to order some red bellies ..my hope was to throw in a large school of cardinal or neon tetra's and other small tetra's ,rasbora's ...something like that ..have any of you had good expierence with this ?

Yes, you can keep them with neons etc. -- but that doesn't mean you will still have them a few weeks down the line! LOL Most of the time it is better to put them with their own kind, as more often than not, any smaller (sometimes even much larger) fish are potential meals!

well i guess i'll try it we'll go with neons and see what happens ..i also had another ? i was thinkin around 5-7 red bellies how many can i have in a 135gallon ? how fast do these fish grow ..my problem is this 135 will replace my 75 gal hex in my living room and i'd rather not have a 135g with 5-7 2" red bellies ..the tank would just look so bare ..thanks

Let's put it this way....none what so ever, even keeping it's species in their is danagerous

Freind had a 14" ocar and 4 piranhas about 3" each, they ganged up on the oscar and nothing was left. So tell me that their's a species that can live with them, only thing I can think of is their food.

Depends on the fishkeeper IMO. I had 6 RBPs in a 60 gallon, they were 1" to 6" in size, they shared the tank with 3 tinfoil barbs, bala shark, buffalohead cichlid, cons, guppies and others I cant think of. Oh yeah, a 6 inch ternetzi. Even threw in a gold spilo for a couple hours, but serras own pygos, so I had to take out goldy. Im not sure why the reds didnt attack the other fish, but they left them alone, perhaps it was the amount of beefheart, krill and shrimp I was giving them.

Not recommended for everyone, I had plants and driftwood in particular places. If the Reds were on the left side, I made it so it would be hard to see the right side of the tank. Its like that zen thing in the buddist garden, there are 6 rocks in the garden, but you will only see 5 at all times.

I have 2 P. Piraya 1 Natt and 1 Caribe all 7-8" and fed every day. Well I took some of the small danios from work and put them in my tank thinking that they would be too small and fast for my Ps.I was wrong all three were gone the next day. Nothing lives with my Ps except this 8" inch stripped ralph cat I have had for about 6 months now.

I think you should go with a dozen small Ps and grow them out. They grow fast to six, inches it wont take long! Once they reach that size pick out your best ones and sell or trade in 4-6 individuals. You may even turn a slight proffit by doing this.

I have 4 bala sharks in with mine. my rb chase them but are never fast enough. granted they do have frizzeled tail fins but are healthy fish. i also have some c.loaches that haven't been touched and some chinese algea eaters that are doin fine. depends on the space and aval hiding spots

hey thanks a bunch for your replies ..there's a deal online for someting like 12 1" for 50 or 10 2"s for 80 ..put them in my 125 and put some cheap smaller fish and see what happens . instead of starting a new thread and after searching but getting conflicting responses what other piranha will go with so rbp or super rbp ? i'd like a school of rbp and maybe one other type

I've seen this as well, though I also don't know how long it worked. I like the idea of black skirts, maybe phantoms, or head-and-tail light tetras.

well the only difference between reds and "super reds" is supers are wild. ternetzi is a yellow version of the rb that would work too. basically any member of the Pygo fam (Piraya{Big money} and Cariba). If you are going to have a mixed shoal that is fine but dont have 5 RB and 1 cariba. you dont want anyone singled out. everyone seems to be crazy about piraya, they are pretty but i like my reds.

i have had Piranhas for years, they are my fav fish and I have learned alot about them from just studying their behavior with one another and their feeding habits in relation to water quality etc.. another observation i have made over the years is this one.. Piranha tankmates DO NOT EXIST! sooner or later what looks to be a tankmate ends up a snack.. They are genetically programmed to rule their domain and kill whatever they can, they can't help it, it's just the way they are.... Sorry but that's reality.. Besides, why would you want anything else in there unless it's food. haha
